siding at Vohwinkel, Rhineland, Germany,
have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Driving Mechanism for the Comb Cylinders of Rotary Combing Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in an improved driving arrangement for the comb cylinder or rotary combing machines of the type having swingingnippers which remain stationary or almost stationary during the time the comb is in action. y
In accordance with the present invention the comb cylinder receives a variable speed in such a manner that it is rotated more slowly in correspondencewith the increasing resistance which the more closely positioned needles of the successive comb shafts ofthe comb segment find in the tufts of fibres, and makes up for the lost time as soon asthe comb segment has no further work to do. This enables a substantially higher production of the combing machine to be obtained. If for example the peripheral speed of the comb segment is reduced by five percent during the time the fine needles arein action and on the other hand the peripheral speed during the time that the needles are not working is increased by only fifteen percent, an average of five per cent higher speed of the comb cylinder is obtained and conse quently the roduction of the machine is increased by ve per cent. 7
Further advantages of the invention are that smoother combing of the tufts of fibres by the closely-positioned needles takes place; that the fine rows of needles are subjected to less tear and wear; and that finally a by-product is obtainedl which contains fewer torn fibres than when the comb cylinder is driven in the hitherto usual manner.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated two suitable constructions of driving mechanism, but I make no claim to that mechanism per se as similar mechanism for imparting a variable speed from one shaft to another is well known and has been employed to impart a variable speed to a comb cylinder for a different purpose from mine. My invention consists in the particular manner in which the variable motion is imparted so that the aforesaid higher production and advantages are obtained.
