D. SILBERMAN FASTENER STRIP Filed Sept. 20. 1921 J1/fomato?, A
PATENT orifice.-
DAVID SILBERMAN, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FASTENER STRIP.
Application led September 20, 1921. Serial No. 501,948.
i To all 'whom t may concer/lt.' i
Be it known that I, DAVID SILBERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, fhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastener Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to apparel and is particularly directed to an improved fastener strip.
As is well known, strips of this type are primarily employed to eliminate the trouble and expense of attachingseparate fasteners along the edges vof garment closures; and while the type of fastener employed depends somewhat upon the articular use for which the strip is designe my'invention is more particularly adapted to strips carrying hooks and eyes respectively.
A principal "object of my invention is to provide a new `and improved construction which will provide an unusually strong and firm mounting for the vindividual fasteners, reducing materially the liability that oneor two fasteners on a strip will pull out, Iwithout sacrificing cheapness of construction and the attractiveappearance of a garment made with these strips.
Another object is to produce a strip which may be'very readily and rapidly manufactured by continuously-operating machines of standard types.
Other objects of my invention will be apl parent from the following description taken in connection with'the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of two complementary strips the ends being yturned back to show the arrangement, construction and method of interlocking the stri s. i
Figure 2 is a erspective view o the fastener-carrying e ement, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section through two connected complementary strips.
j Broad] speaking, I attain-the above ob- .jects 'by rst mounting the hooks or eyes on a strip o f strong material; and I then sew this material betweenplies of a covering strip to produce the finished article. In
order to inake my construction clear I will first describe the method of constructing a preferred type of strip shown in the drawings.
I first attach a seriesof fasteners such .as the eyes 10 at spaced intervals along4 astip,
curely in finished position.
which preferably is in the form -of strong tape. While any means of mounting the eyes may be used, I prefer to employ the rivets 12, as standardmachines for riveting these fastenersv along the tape in the manner indicated are obtainable. This particular construction and method is much stronger than ordinary cloth and the riveted arrangement eliminates well lknown difficulties in'- cident to sewing the fasteners'in position.:
The tape, :with the eyes 10 preferably located so as to project beyond an edge thereof, is placed on the cover strip 13 intermediatey its edges, and a-marginal portion 14 of such strip is folded over the tape in such a.. v
way that its edge 15will extend over rivets 12, and preferably to or slightly beyond the adjacent edge of tape 11. The edge 14 is then 'sewed through the body of covering strip '13, the 'stitches 16 preferably passing through the edge of tape 11, thereby binding the tape, fasteners and covering strip sethat for this purpose a sewing-machine be employed which will operate intermittently, so that no stitches will be extended through the portion of the tape occupied by the fasteners; but if desired the stitching may be so arranged across the relatively thin wire portions of the fasteners so that it may be substantially continuous, the needle slidin past the wire ofthe fastener if it shoul u come down too close thereto.
`It will be apparent that numerous methods of sewing the over-turned portion 14 through or over the tape 11 can be employed,
and my inventionl comprehends such varlal tions as will be apparent to one skilled in this art.
When the complementar "fastener strip including ,the covering strip 13a and fasteners 10` is similarly 4constructed the two may he assembled in well known manner as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the fasteners. being covered on both sides by portions of the covering strips to protect the garment from damage by the fasteners. However, if this `arran ement should not be necessary or desrab eit will readily be understood that the portions of one or both covering strips extending beyond the lines of stitching 16 and 16EL may readily be turned back or substantially dispensed with .without in 'terfering with the principal features ofmy invention above outlined. It will however be likewise apparent that my construction It is preferred v permits shielding fasteners on both sides, if it is considered preferable. e
From the above description it will be apparent that strips embodying my invention may readily be manufactured in any of the various forms which may be required with the lgreatest speed and cheapness, as the tape 11 may be run through a fastener-attaching machine and thence with the covering strip 13 through simple guides tg the sewing machine presser foot, only a single seam being required.. Furthermore, the construction is extremely strong and durable.
While l have indicated the preferred form of mydnvention together with certain modications which will be apparent to those skilled in the art, it will be evident that other changes and rearrangements may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
l claim:
l. A fastener stri including a tape base strip, a plurality oi' fasteners of the hook and eye type mounted at spaced intervals on said base strip and projecting beyond an edge thereot, a textile cover strip longitudinally folded and enveloping said base strip, the cover strip extending over the side o' the base strip to which the fasteners are Leeaeea attached substantially to the abovementioned edge thereof, and means extending through superposed portions of the cover strip'and base stri 2. A astener strip assembly comprising a substantially flat, base strip of strong textile material, a plurality of fasteners of the hook and eye type rivet-ed to said strip at spaced intervals, near one .edge thereof and with active portions of the fasteners projecting beyond said edge, a cover strip having a relatively wide portion'underlying said base strip and the projecting fastener members and another narrower folded portion overlying the base strip at the opposite face thereof enclosing .the base strip, and
a line of stitching securing the edge of said narrow cover strip portion to the wide cover strip portion, and securing the base strip and fasteners in position with the active fastener members projecting beyond.l the edge of the narrow cover strip portion and accessible fer engagement vby cio-operative fastener members.
