Be it known that I, JOSEPH PETERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Splitting or Breaking Paving Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for splitting or breaking stone blocks and the like and it has vmore particular reference t0 machines which are adapted by means of a power-driven hammer for breaking or splitting paving-blocks of concrete or other homogeneous nature and substance squarely into two part-s so that the operation of street or roadbed paving may be eiiectively carried out with the proper broken joints so vitally essential to proper paving.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel means whereby the shocks incidental to stone or paving block severance by power-driven hammer devices are effectively absorbed.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a novel paving block splitting or breaking machine which is automatic in action.
Further objects of this invention consist in the provision of a novel paving block splitting or breaking machine which is simple to construct, automatic in action, effective in use, not liable to getv out of order, and which ensures the purposes for which it has been devised far more efliciently than any other analogous structure heretofore produced.
With the foregoing and'other objects in view my invention consists essentially in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described, and more specifically defined by the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings and in accordl ance with my invention I construct anunderframe or body 4 adapted for transportation on road wheelsv 5, said underframe or body `being ofstrong and durable character and having built thereon spaced vertical standards 6 conveniently of channel, cross-section braced by rods? and serving as supports for a'powerlhammerf of appropriate typethat shown representing an Ingersoll; Rand pneumatic hammer.l In order to provide a more convenient means whereby the v power-hammer 8 may b'e raised andJ lowered relative to the standards 6 lfor regulating or varying the stroke -Iv substitute a gear wheel 9 for the usual crank provided 'for4 this purpose, said gear'wheel V9lmeshing with a larger toothed wheel 10 on the upper end of a'verticalrod or shaft 11' journaled at l2,

Thus it will be seen -thata simple and eiie'ctive meansis provided for varying thehammers stroke, said means being within easy, reach ofthe operator and obviating the necessity of climbing on the machine whichV has hithertofbeen required to operate theV crank handle above referred to.
The usual achustable guide-rods are designated by the numeral'14, their lower ends 'f being screwvthreaded linto thel brackets `15 secured to the underframe or body 4 in the well known way, whilst thecustomary bridge spring is indicated by the numeral 16,'its y purpose and functionbeing well understood. the limbs whereof are broadened out 4at 18 A compression springs V23 are interposed between the iianges 19 and lock nuts and washers 24 on the guide rods 14, Vit being of course -well understood that the lock nuts make provision for the adjustment ofthe springs 23 as required.
The anvil block Y 25 preferably consists of a rectangularly cut piece of hard lumber -reinforced at itslower front and back edges by opposed channel irons 26 conveniently anchored thereto by through bolts 27, and said anvil block is supported on a Slice or hard lumber sled 28 suitably attached to the underframe 4 by eye bolts 29, links 30 and stay rods 3l. Th-us it will be seen that the anvil block 25 can be readily trailedv along as the machine is moved about Without disconnection therefrom, and in order to ensure the proper anchoring of said anvil block I preferably employ rods 32 fitted with turnbuckles 33, whereby they can be accuratelyadjusted. At the saine time it is to be noted that wheneverdesired the anvil block 25 and sled 28 can be easily disconnected and otherwise transported when the machine is traveled. long distances or over rough and uneven road surfaces.
Seated within a pocket or recess 34 in the upperpart of' the anvil blockf25 is a. splitting or wedge member 35 withy which and in direct alignment thereover is the splitting tool 3,6l carried by the aforesaid tool tolderf 22; and in` order to providev a simple means whereby the wedge member 35 may be promptly removed for re-grinding or renewal I provide a horizontal boring 37'l in the anvilblock-25 forthe insertion of. an appropriately pointedV or shaped implement which can be driven beneath said member 35 to lift or releasesaine when it has become jammedin the pocket or recess 34 as will be perfectly obviousto those acquainted with the art and use of ma-y chines of the nature described hereinbefore.
An appropriate trip rod 38 connectsfrom the control cock or valve 39 in the air line 40to a pedal lever 41 for starting and stopping the hammer 8.
In order to protect the hands and arms of the operator I` provide a guard device conveniently comprising elbowed members 42 mounted on and outwardly projecting from a rock shaft 43 journaled in bearings 44 transversely relative to the brackets 15 hereinbefore described, a stop ymember or angle. irony 45v serving to support the rock levers away from contact with the anvil. It is to be noted that the lateral parts 46 of the elbowed members 42 serve as arm or wrist supports for the operator whenV placing a block on the wedgel member 35 for splitting, and that said elbow members 42 automatically lift when passing a paving blockvor the like thereunder.
Still further I desire it to be most particularlynoted that by the use and employment of the V-shaped yoke 17, and itsrigid securing to the toolholder 22 the latter is prevented from turning whereby the tool 36 remains always in correct alignmentl with the wedge member 35 a very important factor in ensuring a clean split or breaking of the paving block.f Still another point to be observed-.- isthe notchings tures, and the right is hereby,` reservedto make such changes/and modifications the-rein asfainly like withinthe. scopev of therappended claims. l Y

In a machine for splitting or breaking paving blocks the combinatonwith a vehicular iinderframe and a power actuated tool adjustably mounted thereon. of an anvil adjiistably connected thereto` a. notched wedge shaped member projecting above andl seated in a pocket in the upper-face of said anvil in direct alignment with the power actuated tool, a sled for supporting said` anvil removably anchored to the vehicle underframe, a V.shaped yoke having lateral flanges through which pass the power actuated tool guide rods; compression springs,v between said lateral flanges and lock nuts threaded on the guide rods, said-:yoke beingk secured to the tool holderV whereby the latter is prevented. from turning, means for varying'the stroke of the tool, means for manually controlling( the operation' of theA tool. and gua-rd mechanism for protecting the hands of theoperator. f
3. In amachine for splittingor breaking paving blocks the combination with a vef hicular. underframe and a power actuated tool adjustably mountedthereon. of an. anvil adjustably connected thereto, a notched wedgel shaped memberprojecting above and seated in a ocket in the upper face of said anvil in irect alignment with the power actuated tool, a sled for supporting said anvil removably anchored to the Vehicle underframe, a V-sha-ped yoke having lateral anges thro-ugh which pass the power actuated tool guide rods; compression springs bet-Ween said lateral Hanges and look nuts threaded on the guide rods, said yoke being secured to the tool holder whereby the latter is prevented from turning, means for varying the stroke of the tool, means for manually controlling lthe pera-tion of the tool, and guard mechanism for protecting the hands of the operator, said means comprising spaced elbow members carried by a rock shaft supported at the back of the anvil, and a stop bar for preventing the elbow members from falling on the upper face thereof.
