Be'itknown that we, ARTHUR WILLIAM lVHIsrLncRorr and HAROLD ROBERT Comer VAN DE VELDE, subjects 'of Great Britain, residing at 81 Baker Street, London, W21, and 57 Ravensbourne Road, Bromley, in the county of Kent, England, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winches,` of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawin rl`his inventionrelates to Winches, and ltsobject is to provide an improved winch which can 4be turned to wind inV by means cfa handle, is normally braked when the handle is released and can by the movement of the handle through a small angle be freed to let the load run out.
According to our invention we' provide a winch barrel with a friction brake which normally holds the barrel from rotating, through which the barrel can be 'rotated in one direction to wind in and which can be withdrawn from engagement with thebarr'el so that the latter is free to turnin the opposite direction under the pull of the cad whilst the handle is stationary.
@ur invention is illustrated by the 'accompanying drawings, Figure 1 of which is a'vertical section through a Winch suitable for controlling al trailing aerial on an aeroplane, while FigureQ is an elevation.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention land in what manner the'same is .to be performed, we declare that what we claim is l. In a winch, the combination of a Winding drum, afriction brake located within said drum and adapted normally to engage the inner surface of said drum to hold the same stationary and means for driving-said drum through said brake and for releasing said drum from said brake. 2. ln a winch, the combination 'of a winding drum, a friction brake located Within said drum and adapted to engage the inner surface thereof, -a winding handle for drivingsaid drum through said brake and means operated by back pressure on said handle for releasing said brake whereby the handle is stationary when the drum is revolving to run out the load.

In a winch, the combination of a Wind ing drum, a friction brake located Within said drum and normally maintained in engagement with the inner surface thereof, a stationary support, means cooperating with said support and with Said brake to permit rotation in oneldirection only of said brake, a Winding:r handle, said handle being con nected to saidgbralre for driving the drinn Athrough the brake by rotation thereof,
whereby when back pressure is applied to 1l Said handle said brake is released.
7. In a Winch7 the combination of a winding drum, a friction brake located Within said drum and adapted to engage the inner surface thereof, a ratchet Wheel connected 20 toone end of said brake, a support having a winding handle and a connection between said winding handle and the other end of lsaid brake for driving said drum through said brake.
