FLYING IJIACHNE.
Application filed October 6, 1921.' Serial No.` 505,959.
To all whom t may conc-erm.:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. HnYDoN, a citizen of the Uni-ted States, residing at Ponca, in the county of Dixon, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Flying Machine; and l do her'eby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v llhe invention relates to flying machines of the manually operated type, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is provided with oppositely rotated propellers, said propellers beingrotated by Vmeans of'a pedal operated gear, which gear has a gear and shaft connect-ion with the propellers. y
A further object is to provide a iying machine comprising a wheel supported frame, a pair of spaced propellers supported forwardly of the frame, said propellers hav ing shaft connections with spaced oppositely Vdisposed bevelled gears and gear and shaft connections with a pedal operated gear v whereby the bevel gears of the propeller shafts are simultaneously rotated Vin opposite directions, thereby allowing the manually operated flying machine to glide and rise into the air.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth', showny in the drawings, described and claimed, y it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the. drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine..
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the gear casing, showing the drive gears for the propeller shafts.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the pedal operated drive gear andthe shaft carried gear connected therewith.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates spaced gliding planes, which planes are carried by a frame 2. The frame 2 is provided with a rearwardly extending portion 8, to which is secured in any suitable manner an elevating plane 4 and a lateral guiding plane 5. Extending downwardly from the frame 2 are brackets 6, in which are mounted an aXle 7, and on which axle wheels 8 are rotatably mounted. rlhe wheels 8 roll over the ground during a talring off or landing operation.' Disposed with a bevel gear 16 meshing with the drive gear 12, and its upperend with a bevel gear 1.7, which is geared to the horizontally disposed bevel gear18 by means of an idle gear 19. lt will be seen that when the gear Y 12 is rotated by the operator that the gear 18 will also be rotated, thereby imparting rotation to the horizontally disposed gear 20 carried by the shaft 21, which shaft is mounted in anti-frictional bearings 22 in a wall 23 of the casing 14. The anti-frictional bearings take up the thrust of the shaft 21 and its gears, and also reduces the friction to a minimum. Disposed within the gear .casing 14 are spaced bevelled gears 24 and 25, with which gears the bevel gear 20 meshes, in such a manner that no matter in which direction the bevel gear 20 is rotated the bevel gears 24 and 25 will be rotated in opposite directions. The bevel gear 25 is carried by a propeller drive shaft 26, the forward end of which is provided with a propeller 27. The bevel gear 24 is provided with a sleeve 28 through which the shaft 2t extends and in which the` shaft 26 rotates, said sleeve being provided with a propeller 29. lt will be seen that when the gears 24 and 25 are rotated in opposite directions the propellers 27 and 29 will be simultaneously rotated in opposite directions, thereby causing the flying machine as y which is simple in construction,.and one so constructed that the operator may rotate the propellers while seated on a seat above a drive gear, which driveggearv isprovided with pedals. It will alsobe seen that the propellers 27 and 29 are driven through gear mechanism which are simple in construction and in Such" a manner `rthat said propellers will rotate in opposite directions at the saine speed,y thereby increasing the` pullingV power; and' at the Sametime preventing" side movement' of thedevice as a whole. incident` to th'e'right hand or the left' hand propeller. Extending downwardly, andk inwardly fromL the gearoasing 14; are braces 3l, which bracesV are attached to the forward `edgeforthe lower plane l, said braces 3i in connection with the'braces 30 formingr the supporting means for the gear casing 14j The invention having beeny setY iorth what is claimed as new andnseful is A" iyingmaehinef comprising a frame', an oper'ators: seat.' disposed on saidframe,A a main`- drive. gear disposed below saidop'en at'orsseat; pedals carried by said drive gear whereby the operator may rotate the same with his: ieet", a pair' of-propellersmounted onh shafts and disposed:y adj aeentfy the forward end of the. frame; one of" said propeller shafts being rotatably mounted in the other propeller shaft and having its inner end eX- tending beyond the inner end or the other shaft, bevelled gears in opposed positions carried by said shafts and spaced from each other, said bevelled gears and shafts being carried by a raine supported easing, a bevel'led gear disposed between said shaft carried bevelled gears and meshing therewith, a downwardly extending Shait carried by the last named bevellec gear7V a bevelled gear carriedby the lower end of thelast named shaft, an angnlarly disposed downwardly and rearwardly extending drive shaft, av bevelied gear carriedY by the upper end of said last named shait, an idle gear connecting the last named bevelle L gear and the bevelled gear carried by the lower end of the downwardly extending shaft and a bevelledfgear carried by the lower end or the downwardly and rearwardly extending shaft andrneshing with the drive gear.
n testimony.v whereofl have-signed my name to this specification in the presence ofAv two subscribing witnesses.
