Be it known that l, HENRY Si. Henman, a citizen ot the United States, residing at tlccum, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain' new and useful improvements in rlhread- Cutting Attachments for Loom rlemples; and l do declare t e following to be a ull, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
'lhis invention relates to an attachment to De used in connection with a loom temple and to serve as means tor cutting thread extending trom the woven cloth at the selvaga @ne object of the invention is to provide an attachment which can be put in place in connection with a loom temple having sub stantially a conventional construction, it being only necessary to make a slight change in construction in order to permit oi the thread cutting attachment being put in place.
Another object ci the invention is to so construct this attachment that whenin use, it will have no tendency to cut the selvage edge ot the cloth, but at the same time serve to very eiectively cut the protruding end portions oit the old and the new threads.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this cutting attachment that when in use, the threads will not have a tendency to wind upon the cutting attachment and thus serve to prevent proper operation of the same.
Another object oit the invention is to provide an attachment which can be very easily put in place and may be firmly held in the proper position when in use.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this attachment that the cutting blades may beiirmly held in place by vtrictional grip and may permit of removal for sharpening purposes without it being necessary to take the tempie rapart or remove the attachment from the temple.
Another object oit the invention is to so construct the attachment that it is not necessary to exert pressure which would ltend to interfere with proper rotation of the temple roll. lit has been found that when pressure is exerted, the temple roll will cause the fabric 4to be marked y the teeth oit the roll and the fabric thus damaged. objection has been found to exist in connection with thread cutters including a stationary blade and a rotary blade, the cutters of thetypementioned lbeing further open to the objection that the threads have a tendency to wind about the stem portion of the rotary blade and prevent operation thereof. ln view of the objections noted in connection with the cutters'which include a stationary blade and a rotary blade, these have not been found satisfactory and theretore at the present time it is customary to leave the threadsl upon the cloth and then remove them by singeing. This singeing is objectionable since it often happens that the threads will be burnt too close and the selvage edge will be damaged.

This temple is of substantially a conventional construction' and yincludes a box B having a slidebar S'which eXtends into the usual slide bar box S. rlhe box is fur ther provided 'with the usual stop arm A which will bey hit by the lay' of the loom in order to move the slide bar against the action of the usual spring provided in the slide bar box. The boa: B is provided with the usual pod l andcap 2 which is provided at one end with the usual head 3 through which extends the usual fastener bolt Il which serves to releasably secure the Cap in place. Theusual temple rolls 5 and 5 are positionedwithin the box and rotatably mounted upon the usual spindles which enu tend longitudinally of the pod 1 and are designated by the numerals 5 and 6. So far the temple described is oi a conventional construction and no claim is made to the same.

It should be noted that the iianges 10 and 11 are undercut from their inner faces so that they overhang the outer face of the blade and thus prevent the yblade from moving out orl proper position when placed in the carrier fra1ne9.` At Vits upper end, this carrier frame 9 is provided with a side arm 12 lhaving a iastenerY receiving opening 13 and at its lower end Ythe frame has been provided with an'enlarged lower end portion 14:V provided with a' diagonally disposed slot 15 and an opening 16.`l This opening 16 is of suiiicientl size to Ipermit the hollow side arm or sleeve 17 of the toothed wheel 18 to pass through the opening 16 and permit easy rotation when "this sleeve` 17 is passed through the opening 16 and tightly fitted into the end ofthe roll 5. lIt will thus be seen that the attachment will'be connected with the roll 5 and when in place, the roll 5 and wheel 18 may rotate upon the stem 5 andthe sleeve 17 turn 'in the opening 16 withoutbinding.
'Inorder' to put the cutting attachment in place, "the pod 1 has been provided with a groove 19Ato receive the lower end portion of the frame 9 and thev head portion 20 of this pod. has been provided with a recess 21 which'receives the thread engaging wheel 18. The head 3 of the cap 2 has its end face provided with a recess 22 to receive theside arm12 and a threaded socket leads from this'recessto receive the fastener screw 28 which passes through the side arm to hold the fraineiin the vertical position. At the junction of the cap 2 and head 8 there has been' provided a slot 24' which is positioned above the slot 19`so that the frame 9 may extend into this slot 24 when in the position shown in Figs. 1, 3 anda. `It will thus be seen'that the attachment can be put in place and when in place will be firmly seated and will be firmly held in place :and will 'not be in the way.
A`llVhen the attachment is in place andthe loom in operation, theffabric passes through the box B beneath the cap Zand passes over the rollers 5 and 6. Duringoperatiom the lay ofthelooml strikes rthestop arm A. and movesthe'sli-de bar'S longitudinally of the slide bar box Sf. "Therefore, the slide bar is caused to have reciprocating movement and asitmoves they rollersV andf are caused to roll along the woven fabric and of course thread engaging wheel 18. The teeth of this wheel 18 will engage the threads and as the wheel oscillates with the roller 5, these protruding threads will be brought into engagement with the cutting edge 8 oit the blade 7 and move baclr and forth along this edge until they are cut oil. When it is desired to sharpen the cutting blade, the upper end portion can be grasped by means of a pair of pliers and the blade easily drawn out of the carrying .trame 9. After it has been sharpened, it can then be easily put back in place. 1t will thus be seen that there has been provided a device which will be very eliicient in operation and can be easily applied to a loom temple ott a convention-al construction.
While the cutter has been shown used in connection with a temple oiz the double roll type it is to be understood that it may also be applied to a temple of the single roll type in which the cloth passes under the roller instead of over the roller.
I'claim:
1. The combination with a loom temple including a box and a temple roller, of thread engaging means actuated by said roller, ablade carrying frame, loosely connectedat its lower end to said thread engaging means and its upper end removably secured to said box, anda cutting blade mounted on and co-acting with said carrying frame to cut the threads.v
2. The combination with a loom temple including a box and a temple roller in said box ol thread cutting means including a thread engaging wheel carried by and turning with said roller, a blade carrying iframe, positioned vertically and having its lower end removably secured to said thread engaging wheel and its' upper end removably secured to `said box and a blade secured to said blade carrying frame.
3. The combination with a loom temple including a box and a temple roller, of thread cutting means including a thread engaging wheel carried by and turning with said roller, a blade carrying frame removably connected at its upper end to said box and having its lower end loosely connected with said thread engaging wheel and provided with a thread receiving slot, and a cutting bladesecured to said carrying frame in operative relation to said slot.

'The combination with a loom temple including a box and a temple roller in said box, of thread cutting means including a thread engaging wheel having a hub extension engaged with said roller for turning there-with; a blade carrying frame provided with a slot and having its upper end re movably secured to said box and its lower portion loose on the hub extension of said thread engaging wheel, a cutting blade positioned vertically on and secured to said carrier frame said blade having its lower end sharpened and positioned in operative relation to the slot in said carrier frame.
