MACHINE FOR MASHING BEEFSTEAK AND THE LIKE.
Application filed November 15, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD STILLsoN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and resident of Williamsburg, in the county of Dundas and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Meshing Beefsteak and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in machines for mashing beef steak andthe like and relates more particularly to machines of the character stated which may be detachably clamped to a table or other support without injury to the latter.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a machine of the character stated which will be of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, simple in operation and highly efiicient in use and also composed of the minimum number of parts.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a machine of the character stated which will be constructed in such a manner that the co-operating mashing rollers may be provided with offset or interlocking circular series of teeth and one of the rollers resiliently pressed toward the other roller during operation of the machine to assure functioning of the rollers.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a machine of the character stated in which the frame members carrying the rotatable rollers are securely held on the standard and supported by the same in a horizontal plane above the support to which the machine is clamped, so that the rollers may operate above a vessel into which the meat is permitted to pass as it leaves the rollers.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying'drawings forming a part of the present application in which:

Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 10 designates the standard which is bent upon it self at its lower end to form the U-shaped member 11 for engagement over the edge of a table leaf 12 or other suitable support, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. A set screw 13 is threaded through the lower side of the U-shaped member 11 and provided with wings 14 or the like at its outer end by means of which the set screw 18 may be readily rotated to move the clamping disk 15 toward or away from the under side of the support 12, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. It will be clearly seen that the clamping disk 15, which is preferably swivelled on the end of the set screw 13, will co-operate with the upper leg of the U-shaped member 11 to clamp the machine to the support 12. The standard 10 is slightly inclined and has its upper end 16 curved and then terminated in an enlarged flattened extremity 17 having recesses 18 in its opposite sides to receive the straight inner ends 19 of the frame members 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A central longitudinal reinforcing rib 21 is pro vided on the outer side of the standard 10 and extended practically the entire length thereof to reinforce and strengthen the same. The main portions of the parallel frame members 20 are offset outwardly from the ends 19 thereof and connected therewith by the curved shoulders 22. A. suitable clamping bolt 23 is extended through the ends 19 of the frame members 20 and through the enlarged flattened extremities 17 of the standard 10. The parallel frame members 20 have elongated grooves 24 in their inner faces to accommodate bearing blocks 25 for the reduced ends 26 of a roller 27. Lugs 28 are carried on one side of the bearing blocks 25 and opposed to corresponding lugs 29 carried on the end walls of the grooves 2%, adjacent the outer or free ends of the frame members 20. Springs 30 are positioned between the end walls carrying the lugs 29 and the opposed faces of the bearing blocks 25, the opposite ends of the springs 30 being engaged on the lugs 28 and 29, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. These springs 30 serve to resiliently force the roller 27 toward a second roller 31. This second roller 31 has "all reduced ends 32 which are rotatably mounted in the frame members 20 at a point between the roller 27 and the shoulders 22 of the frame members 20. One of the frame members 20 is preferably provided with a downwardly extending recess 33 for one of the reduced ends 32 of the roller 31, as shown in Fig. 3, while the other reduced end 32 is preferably extended through a bearing opening provided in the other frame member 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, this last men: tioned reduced end, 32 terminating in a square extremity 34E outwardly of the frame member 20 through. which the reduced end 32 isextended, so as to receive an operating handle, wheel or the... like, not shown.
Each of the rollers 27 and 31 is provided with a plurality of equally spaced circumferential rows of pointed teeth 35. These rows of teeth 35 are arranged so that the teeth on one roller works in the grooves between the rows of teeth 35 on the other roller, as shown in Fig. l, as well as Fig. 1. The teeth of the different rows on one roller may also automatically work between the teeth on the adjacent rows of the other roller, as shown in Fig. l.
It is believed the complete construction and operation of the machine may now be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, without further detailed description. The operation may be briefly stated, however, as follows: After the machine has been clamped upon the support 12, as shown in Fig. 2 and a suitable vessel placed on the support 12 beneath the rollers 27 and 31, the steak or other meat or the like to be treated in the machine, is forced downwardly between the rollers 27 and 31, the operating handle or wheel for the machine being operated to impart rotation to the roller 31. The material passing between this roller 31 and the roller 27' will compel. rotation of the latter toward the roller 31. The springs 30 will act to force the roller 27 toward the roller 31 with sufficient pressure to assure proper operation of the rows of teeth 35 on the rollers 31 and 27 and co-operation of the teeth of the two rollers to thoroughly mesh or cut through the meat and thereby place the meat in such a condition that it will be practically the same as tender meat when cooked. If necessary, the meat may be passed through the machine several times although one co-operation on the meat by V the rows of teeth 35 on the rollers 31 and 27 should be suflicient.
It is evident that the parts of the machine may be readily assembled or taken apart, and cleaned as desired. It is also apparent that the frame members 20 will be securely held in proper position on the standard 10 during operation of the machine, showing to the manner of mounting the frame members 20. Furthermore, theroller 27 may move longitudinally in the frame members 20 with the bearing blocks 25, according to the thickness of the meat or other material passed between the rollers 31 and 27.
lVhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating elements may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spiri of the invention, 7 7

1. A meat mashing machine including frame members; rollers mounted in said frame members for rotation; said rollers having circumferential rows of teeth formed thereon; means for resiliently forcing one of said rollers toward the other roller; a bracket for supporting said frame members; a block formed at one end of said bracket and having recesses in the sides thereof; said frame members having inwardly offset ends engaged in said recess; means for securing said ends in said recess; a substantially U-shaped bracket member carried at the other end of said standard; and an adjustable clamping member carried by said substantially U-shaped bracket member to clamp the standard on a support; said standard having a reinforcing rib extending practically the entire length thereof.
2. A meat mashing machine including parallel frame members; a pair of rollers rotatably mounted in said parallel frame members; said rollers having offset circumferential rows of pointed teeth; means for resiliently retaining one of said rollers in operative position adjacent the other roller; a bracket for supporting said frame members; a block formed at one end of said bracket and having recesses in the sides thereof; said frame members having inwardly offset ends engaged in said recess; means for securing said ends in saidrecess; a substantially U shaped bracket member carried at the other end of said standard; and an adjustable clamping member carried by said substantially U-shaped bracket member-to clamp the standard on a support; said standard having a reinforcing rib extending practically the entire length thereof. 7
3. A meat mashing machine including a pair of parallel frame members; rollers rotatably mounted in said parallel frame members; said rollers beingprovided with circumferential rows of teeth; bearing blocks for one of said rollers; said bearing blocks being movable longitudinally within said parallel frame members; means for operation on said bearing box to resiliently force the last mentioned roller toward the other roller and assure co-operation of the teeth on said rollers when a material is passed between said rollers; a bracket for supporting said frame members; a block formed at one end of said bracket and having recesses in the sides thereof; said frame members having inwardly offset ends en gaged in said recess; means for securing said ends in said recess; a substantially U- shaped bracket member carried at the other end of said standard; and an adjustable clamping member carried by said substantiallv U-shaped bracket member to clamp the standard on a support; said standard having a reinforcing rib extending practically the entire length thereof.
