To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SMELIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nokomis, in the county of Montgomery, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burner Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cleaning devices and particularly to devices for cleaning the burners of miners lamps.
Acetylene gas lamps are most generally used in mines, and the burner tips become clogged, making it necessary to clean out the small opening, as well as to scrape the caked carbon which surrounds the opening. Ordinarily a small wire is used to insert into the gas outlet opening of the burner, but this is a rather difficult operation, especially when it is dark, as the lamp is extinguished before cleaning. Some other tool is used to scrape the collection of carbon from around the outer end of this opening. It is the special object of this invention to provide a device by means of which the opening may be quickly and easily cleared, and the carbon scraped off, without the aid of light.
A further object is to provide a cleaning device of this character which is permanently associated with the burner, so that it is only necessary to swing the cleaner outwardly to properly dispose the same in position to clean the opening or scrape off the carbon.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Carried by the portion 15, on its outer face, and surrounding the opening thereof, is a flange 20, which receives the sleeve 17 therethrough. On the sleeve 1?, outwardly of the flange 20, is a peripheral flange 21, which serves to limit the inward sliding movement of the sleeve toward the burner, the head 18 serving as a stop against movement of the sleeve outwardly, as will be understood. The outer end of the sleeve 17 is formed with a peripheral flange 2:2, which is adapted to be grasped to rotate the sleeve, when applying the head 18 to the outer end of the opening of the burner.
Formed longitudinally in the sleeve. am extending through the point of the head 18, is a small bore 23 in which is slidably disposed a needle 24, which is adapted to clear out the small opening in the burner tip. The inner end of this bore 23 is enlarged, as at 25, to receive the plunger 26. which has its other end extending mitwardly be yond the outer end of the sleeve. Encircling the needle, and secured to the plunger 26,.as is also the inner end of the needle 24', is a coil spring 27, the other end of which bears against the inner face of the head 18, so that the needle will normally be held withdrawn into the head, and may be projected from the point thereof by a pressure inwardly on the other end of the plunger 26.
. Normally the cleaner depends from the burner, as shown in Figure 1, and to place the same in operative position the device is swung upwardly until it extends horizontally outward from the center of the burner. The miner then presses the plunger END 26 inwardly so that the needle will enter the small opening of the burner, and clear out any matter which has clogged up the opening. Upon grasping the flange 22, and pressing the sleeve 17 inwardly, the point of the head 18 will enter the outer end of the opening of the burner, when, upon rotating the sleeve, the inclined faces of the head will scrape the collection of carbon from the mouth of the opening. When not needed, the device is swung downwardly into the position shown in Figure 1.
On the inner ends of the arms of the yoke 12 there are formed small fingers 12 which are bent out of the plane of the arms for engagement with the outer end face of the burner, for the purpose of assuring the proper positioning of the head 18 and needle 24, with respect to the burner, when the attachment is swung upwardly. Carried by the plate 14, and having its outer end bent to extend inwardly beyond the inner face of one of the arms of the yoke 12, is a spring 28, said end being arranged to engage with one side face of the burner to hold the device against dropping into inoperative position, should the miner release his grip on the device. .Vhen the attachment is swung down into inoperative position, the end of the spring 28 will engage beneath the lower face of the burner to prevent accidental swinging of the device, during the movements of the miner, when about his work.
Within the sleeve 17 and surrounding the needle 24, is a piece of fabric impregnated with lubricant, for preventing rusting of the needle.
From the above construction it will be seen that the plunger 26 may be removed so that the needle may be replaced, should the same become broken.
The flange 22 is in the form of a removable disk retained by the lugs 17' which are assed through openings in the disk, and bent to lie on the outer face thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with the burner of a miners gas lamp, of a support movably carried by the burner and movable into posisions depending from and in horizontal alinement with the burner, means on the support for movement toward and away from the burner and rotary cleaning movement within the opening of the burner, and reciprocable means in the first means for movement through the opening of the burner.
2. The combination with the burner of a miners gas lamp, of a support carried by the burner for movement into positions depending from the burner and in outward horizontal alinement therewith, a rotatable carbon removing means on the support movable into and out of engagement with the outer portion of the wall of the burner opening and rotary movement therein, and a needle in the carbon removing means movable into and out of the opening of the burner.
3. The combination with a gas lamp burner, of a support pivotally mounted on the burner and arranged to depend below the burner at times, and to stand horizontally outward therefrom at times, a scraping element slidably and rotatably carried by the support for engagement with the wall of the burner opening, and a needle slidably car- 7 ried within the scraping element and movable into and out of the opening of the burner. 1
4. The combination with the burner of a miners gas lamp, of a support movably carried by the burner and movable into positions depending from and in horizontal alinement with the mouth of the burner, scraping means onthe support for movement toward and away from the burner and rotary cleaning movement within the opening of the burner, a spring retracted burner bore cleaning needle slidably mounted in the scraping means, and means on the support frictionally engaging with the burner for maintaining the support releasably in said positions.
5. The combination with the burner of a miners gas lamp, of a yoke pivotally carried by the burner, a sleeve slidably supported on the yoke for movement toward and away from the burner and rotary cleaning movement within the mouth of the opening thereof, a needle spring held within the sleeve and movable through the opening of the burner, and means on the yoke and engageable with the burner for holding the yoke in depending position below the burner at times and in horizontal alinement outwardly of the opening thereof at times.
