To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON L. Girson, a citizen of. the United States, residin at Sholes, in the county of Wayne and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder-Head Lifters; and T do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to skilled in the art to which-it appertains to 7 make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a lifting device adapted especially for use with the cylinder heads of automobile andother internal combustion engines, more particularly the engines of Ford automobiles, although the devicecan be used for other engines and purposes for which it is suited. It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and practical device of novel construction adapted to be attached to the cylinder head of an engine for conveniently lifting the cylinder head.
With the foregoing and other objects in scription proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig.1 is a plan view of the device as applied to a cylinder head of an engine.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device, portions being shown in section. I
The device includes a horizontal handle 4 to be disposed longitudinally above the cylinder head, and portions 5-extendin at an angle from the ends of the ham e 4 and disposed horizontally or transversely. Terminal portions 6 extend downwardly from the transverse portions 5, and c0nst1- tute the terminals of a rod or other member from which the handle 4' and portions 5 and 6 are formed. The handle portion is offsettransversely or to one side of the vertical plane of the vertical terminal portions 6. In order to attach the portions 6 to the cylinder, screw-threaded plugs 7 are rotatably mounted on said portions 6 and have view, which will be understood as the deheads 8 at their upper ends for the engagement of a wrench or other implement for screwing the plugs 7 into the threaded holes in the cylinder head in which the spark plugs 9 or other plugs are ordinarily secured. Retaining nuts or members 10 are threaded on the terminals 11 of the portions 6, and said nuts are tapered so as to readily enter the holes in the cylinder head.
In using the device, the two intermediate spark plugs are removed, and the plugs 7 are screwed down into the holes from w ich the spark plugs were removed, the portions 6 beingspaced apart the distance between such holes in order that the plugs 7 can be readily screwed into such holes. The device is disposed with the. handle 4: offset inwardly to be disposed substantially over the longitudinal center line of gravity of the cyliner head, whereby the handle 4 in being grasped by the hand will enable the cylinder head to be lifted conveniently, without tilting to one side or the other or binding on the anchor bolts which fasten the cylinder head in place. The nuts or members 10 will prevent the portions 6 from pulling out of the plugs 7 when lifting the cylinder head, it being noted that the portions 6 are sli able in the plugs so that the plugs can be applying and removing the handle. B ushandle having downwardly extending ter-v minal portions, screw plugs rotatable and the present device, the cylinder hea can .screwed and unscrewed individually when 'slidable on said terminal portions to be individually engaged in and disengaged from the spark plug or similar holes in a cylinder head, and retaining members on said terminal portions under said plugs.
2. A cylinder head lifter comprising a handle having downwardly extending terminal portions screw plugs rotatable and slidable on said'terminal rtions to be individually engaged in an disengaged from the span k plug or similar holes in a, cylinnalne ts this .s cificatidn in the presence. I
