When it is desired to hold the rolls D again under pressure, when my form of safety-release device disclosed is used, the screws 2 must be retracted sufiiciently so as to raise the boxes I far enough to permit the ends 6 of the levers K to be positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in contact with the bar H. The screws 2 are then operated, and as the boxes I are lowered the levers K move the presser-bar H to compress the springs G.
Upon referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that since there is a clear space beneath the boxes I, when the safety-release device is moved out of contact with the bar H, the said device as well as the boxes I, will be supported by the screws 2, and consequently none of the weight of these parts will be carried by the bar H at this time.
My preferred manner of associating the screws 2 each with its box I, is to form in the upper side of each of the said boxes a T-shaped slot 7 thus providing flanges 8 with which engages the head 9 of each screw 2 when the safety-release device occupies the dotted position shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed that one end of the slot '7 is open so as to permit of the ready assembling of the boxes I and screws 2.
' The standards A may be coupled together at each side by any suitable means such as nut-provided tie-rods 10 which are held in the lugs 11 forming part of said standards. 12 is a nut-provided tie-rod to couple the lower ends of the standards A together in any wellknown manner. This tie-r0d may be used to mount the apron l3 thereon.
The ends of the presser bar H, preferably project beyond the standards A, and are provided with suitable means to prevent any considerable longitudinal displacement of said bar; such means may be in the form of pins 14 carried by said bar and which come into contact with the standards A and form stops.
While I have described what I consider to be the best embodiment within my invention it must be understood that the principle may be embodied in other different forms, and I desire not to be limited beyondthe requirements of the prior art and the terms of my claim,
In this disclosure of my invention, it will he observed that since the bar L is directly above the rolls D, in case the operators both hands he caught, it' is possible for him to reach forward with the head and release the safety-release device.
In the exemplary disclosure of my invention, the screws 2 and supports therefor; the boxes I, trunnions J levers K, and bar L form what I call the primary pressureexerting elements, while the presser-bar springs Gr, and the upper pair of boxes B form what I call the secondary pressureexerting elements.

In combination a frame including end standards; a pair of rolls mountedto have bearing in said standards; a coiled-spring mounted in each of said standards to rest in contact with the upper of said rolls; a resser-bar resting upon said springs and adapted to be held in co-operative relationship to said standards; a box located within each of said standards near the top thereof; a screw associated with each of the said boxes and having threaded connection with the top of each of said standards, and pressure-exerting means journaled at each end in said boxes and normally in disengage able contact with said presser-bar, the whole designed to co-act for the purpose set forth.
