UNITED STA PATENT 'FFIE."
JOHN w; GREENE, or SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ass xenon r sEmrr-sonvnr coir- PANY, or server, new roam-A CORPORATION or nnwvom MEANS FOR DISCHARGING SMOKE AND GAS FROM COKE OVENS.
Application filed August .12, 1921. Serial No. 491,654,
To all whom it may concern j Be it known that I, JOHN W. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syr acuse, in the county of Onondaga and State I of New York, have invented a new and Improved Means for Discharging Smoke and Gas from Coke Ovens, of which the following is a specification. I
In the operation of charging ahot coke oven with coal, a cat uantity of smoke and gas is given o whic unless otherwise provld openings, with consequent inconvenience an loss of valuable material.
1B The objeetof my'improvement is to -pre-.
vent such discharge and conserve the 'vola-' tile elements given oif from the coal in thecharging operation. v a The invention will be best understood by 80 reference to the accompanying drawings il lustrating an embodiment thereof, Fig. 1 of which shows a vertical, longitudinal .section of a ortion of a battery of cokelovens with a si e elevation of the smoke discharg- :5 ing device mounted thereon, and Fig. 2
shows a vertical transverse section of the.
mally closed by covers, as indicated at B. Above the smoke'vents and disposed longi-' tudinally of the battery is a track 0, upon which is mounted a wheeled carriage D,'
adapted to travel the length of the battery of ovens. Upon the carriage D is mounted a 4:0 vent ipe E, adapted to be raised and lowered y means of pivoted levers d, e. The
vent 1pc E is' provided with depending branc es F, F, so spaced apart as to register at the same'time with. the smoke vents a, of
any two adjacent chambers, as A, A. v, If V desired the vent pipe E, may beso extended as to have more than two depending branches, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig.
1, and thus when in use to connect more than one adjacent oven with that being charged. In using the device when the coke has been discharged from an oven, as A, andbefore a fresh charge of coal is charged into the chamber, the covers, B, of the vent pipe for, escapes through the "charging.
' o eration o a, of the oven A, and oneor more adjacent ovens, as of A, are removed, and the carriage D is moved into proper position and the vent pipe E is-lowered so that its branches F, F,- engage the open vents, as a, a, thus providing a communicating passage between thetwo ovens.
When the fresh charge of coal is charged into the empty oven, A, the smoke and gases given 011' pass through the vent pipe E, and its'branches into the connected oven, as A, and thence into the hydraulic main or usual gas collecting system.
T In this-manner not only is the escape of such smoke and gases into the atmosphere prevented, but they are conserved and'thelr contents of value recovered in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is:--- I 1. The method [of recovering the gaseous products evolved'during the recharging of an empty, hot, retort coke'oven with coal which consists in discharging such Tpfiducts into an oven which is in operatlon and minglin hem with the gaseous products of distil ationin such oven. 1
' 2. A device for eifecting the discharge of smoke and gas from a coke oven during the operationof chargi the oven with coal consistingof a pipe a apted to be connected with such oven and with'an adjacent oven, so
as to form a communicating passage between so as to form a tem between such ovens.
passage 7 I 4. device'for efiecting the discharge of smoke and gas fromnoke ovens during the charging the ovens with coal w ich consists of a pipe. arranged to be moved longitudinally of the battery of'ovens and adapted to be connected with adjacent ovens, so as to form a tem orary communieating passage between suc ovens.
5. device for efi'ecting the discharge of smoke and as'from coke ovens during the o eration o charging the ovens with coal w ich consists of a vertically adjustable pipe porary communicating 98 arranged to be moved longitudinally of the movable longitudinally of the battery and battery of ovens and adapted to be connected adapted to be connected with the vent openwith adjacent ovens so as to form a tempoings of adjacent ovens so as to'providc a com- 10 rary communicating passage between such municat'ing passage between such ovens. 5 ovens. In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature,
6.- A battery of'coke ovens, each of which this 9th day of August, 1921. a v has a vent opening, provided with a pipe JOHN W. GREENE,
