To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID C. KLAUS- MEYER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and residing at Cincinnati, vin the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Safety Manual Feed for Drills, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
This invention relates to machine tool constructions and more particularly t-o mechanism for controlling the advance of the tool into the'worh in power drills.
' In machines of this character Athere is usually provided two trains of mechanism for effecting the relative movement between the work and the tool. @ne of these trains is manuell -driven and the other is powerdriven an includes means for determining the Vrate of feed Vat which the drill enters the work. Until recently, these two trains of mechanism have been so connected together that the manual drive was in motion during the time the power was operating the mechanism and inasmuch as the hand-wheel for effecting the manual-drive is necessarily exposed, and actuated by the power-drive at speeds ranging from 300 to 500 R. P. M., it was a constant source of danger to the operator.
- Recently, however, certain 'constructions have been designed in which the manual drive is necessarily thrown out of action before the power-drive can beset in action, but in order to attain thisresult in a practical way, difficulty was experienced vin doing so without avoiding certain highly desirable features, particularly theJ use of sliding Sets of speed changing gears for coupling the power shaft with the spindle feeding shaft, or without resorting to a less eihcient construction..
It is, therefore, the object of this invention to provide, in a machine of this character, an improved construction selectively permitting either a manual or a power-drive and in which the manual drive will be stationary when the power-drive is active and to do so in such a manner as to still retain other highly desirable features of construction.
A further object of the invention is to so coordinate the manual and power drives that a single controlling element is capable of effecting all of the adjustments required in changing from one drive to the other, and
which also disconnects the hand drive when the power drive is put into action.
Other ,objects and advantages will be in part indicated in the following description and in part' rendered apparent therefrom' in connection with the'annexed drawings. To enable others skilled in the art so fully to apprehend theiunderlying features hereof that they may embody the same in the various ways contemplated by thisinvention, drawings depicting a preferred typical construction have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and, in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which Fig. l is amore or less diagrammatic sectional developnient of a portion of a drilling machine embodying the presentv invention. Fig. 2 is detail viewsof certain gearshift devices later to be referred to. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3 3, of F ig'. 1 showing, in elevation, the manually-controlled gear-shifting device. Fig. 4 is a detail plan of certain of the elements of this construction, showing particularly the means for disconnecting ythe manually-controlled feed-wheel from its shaft, and Fig. 5 is adiagrammatic view lshowing more clearly the connections for shifting the various sets of speed-changing gears.`
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the invention is shown in itsv preferred form in a power-drill including a casing 0r frame 17 within which is journaled a suitable power-shaftl connected (by means of bevel gears 14 and 14a) to rotate a4 shaft l5 also journaled in the frame 17. Within the frame 17 is also journaled a spindle feed-shaft s upon which is secured a wormwheel indicatedin part at 3l.k This feedshaft and worm-wheel are both common to machines of this character and therefore further illustration and description is deemed unnecessary. The vworm-wheel y31, as in earlier machines5 meshes with a worm 28 secured upon a shaft 18 non-translatablyjournaled in the frame 1"?, which shaft may be driven either manually by a hand-wheel 39 or at varying speeds from the powershaft by mechanism now to be described.
Upon the shaft 15 is splined a gear-unit A comprising three integrally formed gearmembers l, 3 and 5 of varying diameters. This gear-unit is adapted'to be translated,

bring the gears 1, 3 and 5 into mesh with gears 2, 4 and 6, respectively, formed on a second gear-unit C j'ournaled on bushings surrounding a shaft 12 secured, parallel with the shaft 15, in the frame 17. The gear-unit C is also provided with a gear 8. The gears 6 and-8 are adapted to mesh with gears 7 and 9 formed in a third gear-unit B splined to the shaft 18 and adapted to be translated ythereon by mechanism later to be referred to. Thus it will be observed that,

The manually-controlled feeding-device comprises the hand-wheel 39 having an integrally formed hub 36 within which is fiXedly secured, by means of a key 11, a
Vsleeve 34 formed at one end with clutch teeth 33'designed to engage like clutch teeth 35 formed on a second sleeve 48 keyed to the shaft 18. The clutch teeth 33 and 35 are normally urged into engagement by a coilspring `10 interposed between the sleeve 34 and the head 38 of a cap screw threaded, as
at 37, into the reduced end 48L of the shaftV 18. Suflicient clearance is provided between the head 38 and the sleeve 34 to permit the sleeve to be moved lengthwise of the shaft 18 sufficiently to disengage the clutch teeth 33 and 35. Y
The mechanism for shifting the gear-units A and B relatively to the unit C comprises a yoke 49 Vjournaled at 50 toa sleeve X loosely fitted upon a tubular support 51` secured at one end in the frame 17. The yoke is provided at one side with a handle 52 and at its other side with an extension 53 terminating yin ahead 54 adapted to fit within a segmental slot 55 formed in a head 56 .fixed to one end of a slide rod 57 provided at itsropposite end with a fork 58 adapted to embrace an annular rib 59 on the gea-rv unit'A. y Y n. F rom an inspection of Fig. 5 vit will be apparent that, by shifting the handle 52 (about vits pivot 50 from the position a. in which gears 3 and 4 arein mesh) to the position Z), the gears 5 and 6 will be engaged and, by shifting Vitto the position c, the gears 1k and 2 will be brought into mesh. To complete they connection between the power-shaft`13 and the worm-wheel 31, it is necessary to connect the gear-units Bl and C.v VThis is effected by moving the handle 52 in a plane transverse to the plane in which it moved to couple the units A and C. This movement causes a partial rotation of the sleeve X about the shaft 18. rlhus, if the handle 52 is shifted from its neutral position d (shown in Fig. 3) to the position a, the sleeve X will be rotated in the direction shown by the arrow 3/ and the cam groove 25 will force the roller 24 to the right, as shown by dotted `lines in Fig. 4 to cause the gears 6 and 9 to engage. Likewise, 'a movement of the handle to the position f will shift the roller to the left and couple the gears 7 and 8.
To effect the disengagement of the hand' wheel 39 from the shaft 18 (when the lever 52 is adjusted to couple 'the automatic feed) the sleeve X is formed with a V- shaped notch in Vone edge. cam-faces g and 7L which, on the'rotation of the sleeve in either direction act upon a tooth Z formed integral with a clutch-disengaging ring'42, splined upon the tubular-support 51 intermediate the sleeve X and the hub 36 of the hand-wheel 39 and forcesthe handwheel outwardly; thus disengaging the clutch teeth 33 and 35. A drilling machine combining a spindle feed-shaft; automatic means for actuating said shaft including a power shaft, a third shaft, a driving connection between said third shaft and said spindle feed-shaft, and
a plurality of relatively shiftable gear-units operatively connecting said power-shaft and said lthird shaft; manualmeans for rotating said third shaft to actuate spindle feedshaft; .and a single feed-controlling element operatively connected with two of said gearunits and movable in one plane to shift one of said gear-units and movable in another plane to shift the other of-said gear units to establish a driving connection between said power-shaft and said spindle feed-shaft, and simultaneously therewith to render said manual means inoperative.

A drilling machine combining a spindle feed-shaft; manual means for actuating said shaft; automatic means for actuating said shaft including a power-shaft, a thirdv shaft, a plurality of relatively shiftable gear-units for operatively connecting said power shaft with said third shaft, a driving connection between said third shaft and said spindle feed-shaft; a feed-controlling element constructed and arranged to be moved, Jrst in one plane to shift one of said gear-units and simultaneously therewith to disconnect said manual means, and second in a plane transverse to said first-mentioned plane to shift another of said gear-units to effect a driving connection between said power shaft and said spindle feed shaft.

A feeding mechanism for drilling machines combining a frame; a power shaft; a first shaft journaled in,v said frame and operatively connected with said power shaft; a second and a third shaft supported in said frame parallel with said first shaft; ya spindle feed-shaft; a driving connection between said third shaft and said feed-shaft; a plurality of relatively shiftable gear-units operatively connecting said first, second and third shafts, and means for selectively meshing the gears of said gear-units to effect a predetermined speed in said feed-shaft; said means comprising a sleeve rotatably iournaled coaXially with said third shaft and providing a cam; an operative connection between said cam and one of said gearunits; a feed-controlling element pivoted to said sleeve and affording means for rotating it; and an operative connection between said controlling element and another of said shiftable gear-units.
5. In a drilling machine, in combination a frame, a spindle feed shaft, automatic means for actuating said feed shaft including parallel shafts j ournaled in said frame, a power shaft, operative connections between said power shaft and one of said parallel shafts,
sliding gear units translatably mounted on said parallel shafts for effecting an operative connectionbetween'said power shaft and said feed shaft, a controlling element for shifting said gear units having movements in one plane for shifting one of said gear units amd in a plane transverse to the first mentioned gear units.

In a drilling machine in combination a spindle feedv shaft, automatic means for actuating said shaft including a power shaft and shiftable gear units, manual means for actuating said feed shaft, means for shifting said gear units to effect an operative con nection betweensaid power shaft and said feed shaft and means intermediate said gear shifting means and said manual means and actuated by the former means for rendering said manual means inoperative.

In a drilling machine, in combination a spindle feed shaft, manual means for actuating said feed shaft, automatic means V,for actuating said shaft including a power shaft plane to shift another of said p and shiftable gear units, a single controlling p element having movements in transverse directions for shifting said gear units, connec` tions between said controlling element and said gear units for shifting the latter to effect an operative connection between said power shaft and said feed shaft each of said connections being actuated by one only of said transverse movements and means actuated by one of said movements for rendering said manual means inactive.

In a drilling machine in combination a spindle feed shaft, manual means for actuating said shaft, automatic means for actuating said shaft including shiftable gear units, a controlling element movable in one plane for shifting one ofvsaid gear units and in another plane for shifting another of said gear units, a rotatable sleeve upon which saidv controlling element is pivot-ed, a. cam surface formed in said sleeve, andmeans actuated by said cam surface for rendering said manual feed actuating means ineffective.

In a drilling machine, in combination a spindle feed shaft, a power shaft, a. third shaft, means for driving said third shaft from said power shaft at any one of a p-redetermined number of speeds said means including a shiftable gear unit, a clutch member secured upon said third shaft, manual means carried by said third shaft for actuating said feed shaft said manual means in.- cluding a clutch member normally engaging said first mentioned clutch member, controlling means for shifting said gear unit and means actuated by said controlling means for disengaging said clutch members.
l0. .A feeding mechanism kfor drilling ma- Vme ehines comprising a power shaft; a. spindle feed-shaft; al third shaft; a driving connection between said third shaft and said feedshaft; a plurality of relatively shiftable gearunits, providing` a plurality of feed changes, operatively connecting said third shaft with said 'power shaft; and nieaiis for selectively meshing the gears of said gear-units to effect any one of a plurality of available feeds in said spindle feed shaft, said means comprising a rotatable sleeve provided with a oaingroove; a sliderod; a fork secured to one end of said slide-rod and engaging one of said gear-units; a roller secured to the opposite end of said slide-rod and tracking rsaid iam-groove; a yoke pivoted to said sleeve transversely to and at one side of the axis of said sleeve; an extension on said yoke; a second slide-rod provided at one end with a fork engaging another of said gearunits and at its opposite end with segment engaging said extension; and a hand-grasp on said yoke for turning said yoke about its pivot to shift one gear-iinit and for rotating said sleeve to shift another of said gear-units.

clutch-teeth formed in said last named sleeve; a spring normallyY acting to holdy said tWo sets of clutch-teeth together; a rotatable .sleeve, )rovided with a gear-shifting eamgroove and two clutch-disengaging cam surfaces, journaled cofaXia-lly with said third shaft; an operative connection between said cam-groove and one of said shiftable gearunits.; a clutchv disengaging ringintermedin ate said sleeve and the hub of said handwlieel and provided with a tooth adapted to engage said two eluteh-'disengaging cams; and manual means for rotatingl said sleeve to cause said cani-groove to shift one yof said gear-units and simultaneously shift said clutcl'i-disengaging ring against theaction of the spring to disengage said clutch-teeth Vand thereby render said manual feedrineffeetive.

The combination set forth in claini 11 characterized by this, that the rotatable gearshifting sleeve is also provided with a plu-r rality of detent notches located at opposite sides of said clutch disengagiii'g cams and adapted to receive the point of said tooth to hold the sleeve. against accidental rotation after it has been manually rotated to shift one of said gear-units.
