The objects of my invention are to provide a demonstration apparatus of the character described which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and which can be operated continuously over extended periods of time without requiring the attention of an operator.
Other objects will appear as this descrip tion progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention shown in plan, certain portions of the spring cover and the container for the operating mechanism being broken away for the purpose of better illus-' tration, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, portions of the container being broken away to reveal the details of construction of the operating mechanism.
In both views, similar reference characters will be used for referring to similar parts.
My improved demonstrating apparatus comprises a container having the top wall 5 and the bottom wall 6, each of which, as indicated in Figure 1, is enlarged at one end to provide a housing for the driving mechanism which will be described in detail later on. Suitable side walls 7, 7 and 8, and the two end walls 9 and 10 complete, the container.
A post 11 is secured to the end wall 9 by means of screws 12, and extends upwardly beyond the top wall 5, as shown in Figure 2. A block '13 is secured to the 0st 11 by means of screws 14, and to-this b ock 13 is secured the larger open end of the spring cover which is illustrated as a whole by reference character 15. For this purpose,
I prefer to use the two clamping plates 16 and the two bolts 17,- by means of which I can firmly clamp the end of the spring cover to the block 13.
The spring cover, as shown in the drawings, is, as stated above, of the type illustrated and described in the two aforesaid Leustig patents and comprises a pair of metal'strips 18 and 19, one of which is in tended to extend along the top of a leaf spring, and the other of which is to extend along the bottom thereof. These strips are provided with staggered overlapping tongues 19 and 20, the tongues 19 and the tongues 20 being separated from each other by suitable V-shaped notches 21, the whole construction.
being such that a flexible metallic cover is provided for a spring. The outer ends of the two cover plates are secured together by means of the two U -shaped clamping plates 22 and 23. The upwardly extending flanges of the clamping plate 22 are enclosed by the downwardly extending flanges of the clamping plate 23, and suitable means are provided for securing these two clamping plates together.
For alternately moving the free end of the spring cover up and down to simulate the movement of the cover while in use upon a spring, I provide certain operating or driving mechanism which is housed in the container described above, and which comprises a base plate 25 upon which is mounted the electric motor 26 having the horizontally extending shaft 27. A bracket 28extends upwardly from the base plate 25 intermediate the ends thereof, and is pro vided with, a horizontal bearing 29 .for the shaft 30 which is secured to the shaft 27 by" the coupling 31, and which forms a con tinuation of the shaft 27. Secured in the outer len'd of the'section 29 is a second extentsion 32 of the shaft 27. The outer end of the shaft extension 32 is journaledin a bear:-
ing 32 carriedby the bracket B. A Wei-pi 33 is secured to the outer end of the section 32 and meshes with a worm wheel 34 carried by a vertical shaft 85, the lower end of which is journaled in the bearing boss 36 projecting from the base plate 25, and the upper end of which is journaled in a bear-j ing 37 carried by the bracket B which projects upwardly" from one end of the base plate 25.
A Worm 39 is formed on the upper end i of thevertical shaft and drives a worm gear wheel 40 which is rotatably mounted upon a stud shaft 41 projecting from the upper end of the bracket 28, a nut 42 being used for-securing the gear on the shaft 41.
The gear wheel 40 is provided with an eccentric pin 43 to which is secured the lower posite that illustrated in Figure 2.
. An inverted U-shaped rod 50,the lowerends of which project through and are secured to the top wall 5, provides a guidewayfor the free, endofthe spring cover which maintains the vertical alignment o1 thecover.
From the above description, it will be seen that when the motor 26 is supplied with current the gear wheel 40 will be driven therefrom, through, two worm reductions at a reduced speed, and that the pitman connection between the gear wheel 40 and the free end of the flexible spring cover will cause the free end thereof to move upwardly anddownwardly in a vertical plane, I
thus simulating the movement and mode of operation of the flexible cover'when in use.

3. A demonstration apparatus comprising .a flexible spring cover, 'means for supporting one end of said cover, motor driven means for alternately moving the free end of said spring cover In opposite directions,
and a guide for confining the movement of said spring cover to a single plane.
