Be it known that l, donn A. Ronnnrson, a citizen of the United States, residing at .f' cchester, in the county of Monroe, State ont New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lhatches for Cameras, or which the following is a speciiication.
My present invention relams to photogi'aph and more particularly to photograp ic cameras or the type embodying a body portion and a removable or dis laceable bach portion cooperating therewit and the invention has tor its object to provide a simple, ecient and inconspicuous latch for securely locking the parts together in a manner making it convenient for the operator to engage or release the'same. rl"he improvements are directed in part toward hitting a sliding latch with a trictional tensioning means ol a simple character readily manuactured and assembled and which maintains the latch in any of its adjusted positions, 'lo these and other ends the inven- "tion consists in certain improvements and combination of parts all as will be hereinafter more 4iully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end or the specidcation.
ln the drawings:
Figure l is a side view oil a camera provided with a latch constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment ci my invention, the carrying handle being removed in this and the other views.
Figure 2 is a similar enlarged view partly broken away and partly in vertical section transversely through the latch.
Figure 3 is a top view ol the camera showing the latch engaged.
Figure l is a similar view latch disengaged.
Ill'gnre 5 is a longitudinal central section throigh the latch von the line 5-5 oi Figure Figure 6 is a perspective view oi the tensio washer plate. Y
Similar reference numerals throughout e several views indicate the same parte.
ln the present embodiment l have illustrated my invention as applied to a folding pocket hand camera of a familiar type compris the body portion 1 and a back 2 removab e therefrom and cooperating therewith on' the line 3 in connection 'with the showing the l0 which latter are usual light sealing devices indicated generally at 3B and 3b in Figure 2. At the bottom the light sealing anges are formed with interlocking shoulders l so 'that when the bottom ci the back is rst engaged with the bottom of the body and the back then swung into complete contact with the body the disengagement of the bottom portion must follow the disengagement of the top portions so that locking devices arranged at lthe top are controlling.
.ln the practice of my invention l provide a latch at the top ci the camera comprising in the present instance a sliding bolt 5 on the body and a pair or upstanding catch pins 6 spaced apart along the top edge ci the bach 2. rllhe bolt 5 is provided with two bayonet slots 7 forming engaging ngers 8 having cam edges so that when they cooperate with the pin 6 they will draw the back in against the body. 'lwo longitudinal slots 9 in the bolt travel on two headed guide pins l0 on the body l and the bolt is confined beneath the headsof these pins. Projecting from the same side oi the bolt as the engaging ngers 8 but also latter is a suitable linger piece extension l1 by means of which the bolt is operated and which becomes readily accessible to the lingers at one side ci the usual carrying strap (not shown) that spans the top of cameras of this kind.
lln order to maintain the bolt yieldably in either its engaged or disengaged position, ll provide tensioning device l2 shown in detail in Figure 6. 'lhis comprises in the present instance a washer plate or strip secured beneath shoulder 13 on the guide pins riveted to the shell of the camera body as clearly shown in Figure 5. 'lhe a ertures la in the washer plate throu h which the ins or rivets pass are s ace apart a very s ightly greater distance t an are these pins so that when the plate is applied to the pins it buckles or bows in an upward direction as shown in Fi e 5. '.lhe parts all being held together y the rivets, the result of this is that bulging plate exerts at/Substantial pressure against the bolt 5 and odors a frictional resistance sucient to maintain it with desired security in any adjusted position though allowing the bolt an easy sliding movement when sucient energy is exerted on the finger piece ll.
