MEANS FOR USE IN PROPELLING AEROPLANES, HYDBOPLANES,AND OTHER CONVEYANCES Application filed February 15, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIETER BARTELD VAN LEGGELO, a subject of the Queen of Holland, residing at Kapellenstrasse 4, Wiesbaden, in
the Republic of Germany, have invented new and useful Improved Means for Use in Propelling Aeroplanes, Hydroplanes, and Gther Conveyances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for use in propelling conveyances of various description, whether on land, on water or in the air, and has for its object to provide apparatus of a simple and inexpensive character for such purposes.
Apparatus adapted for carrying my invention into efiect is illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, whereof Fig. 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end view, and Fig 3 a perspective view.
Immediately in advance of a flat or platelike body a, I arrange a number of vanes or blades I) mounted about a central shaft 0 and preferably parallel therewith. They are respectively attached at one extremity to the face of the aforesaid plate and at their opposite extremities to arms 03 which extend radially from the central shaft. The vanes which may be either flat or curved are disposed at such an angle in relation to the direction of their circular movement that, as the entire group is rotated at a high speed, air is drawn from the centre of the said group and expelled in a radial direction. The efiect hereof is to create a partial vacuum upon that side of the plate on which Serial No. 619,262.
the vanes are mounted; the difference of atmospheric pressure upon the opposite side of the said plate becoming effective for motive purposes.
The rear side of the plate a, oppositeto that carrying the vanes b, may be furnished, near its periphery, with small blades 6 arranged at angles adapted to disperse air tending to creep over the edge of the plate, thereby impairing the vacuum created on the front or vane-furnished side of the plate.
I claim In apparatus for propelling aeroplanes, hydroplanes and other conveyances, wherein a fan or other rotary exhauster is employed for creating a partial vacuum in advance of a disc or similar member against which the superior pressure of the atmosphere acts for the purpose of moving the said disc and the conveyance whereon it is carried, the combination, with a revolving disc or similar member, of a number of inclined vanes mounted endwise thereon and arranged in groups, the vanes pertaining to each group being so disposed that their leading edges are at gradually increasing distances from the centre of rotation; the admission of air to the vanes being prevented at one of their extremities by the disc, whilst their opposite extremities, as also their trailing edges, are open to the atmosphere.
PIETER BARTELD VAN LEGGELO.
