To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, ALFRED E. DRISSNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Direct Drives for Lead Cam Drums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to direct driving mechanism for lead cam drums on metal working machines or the like, an object thereof being to provide mechanism for driving the cam drum directly from the worm gear, thereby eliminating the disadvantages residing in driving mechanism heretofore used wherein the drive is indirect, the same being directed from the worm gear through the cam shaft to which the worm gear is keyed or secured and from the cam shaft to the cam drum, the latter also being keyed or secured to the camshaft. As a result of the present invention therefore, the drive is transmitted directly from the worm gear to the cam drum mounted on the cam shaft instead of indirectly through the cam shaft, as an intermediate means.
Many disadvantages reside in the indirect driving mechanism heretofore used, inasmuch as such drives are troubled greatly by twisting or lost motion between the worm gear and the lead cam drum, which is caused to a considerable extent by the fact that the worm gear drive is indirect. Thus, on account of the existence of twisting and lost motion, the indirect drivespreviously used impart to the main work slide of the machine an unsteady feed. It is the purpose therefore of the resent invention to do away with these disadvantages and as a re sult a simple, direct driving mechanism is provided, which eliminates all lost motion and springing resulting from keying the worm gear to the cam shaft. And hence, by virtue of this improvement, the main work slide carrying the working tools receives a steady and ositive feed from the lead cam drum there v enhancing considerably the efliciency of the machine.
Futhermore, as a result of the present invention, the construction of the driving mechanismis materially simplified, more durable and serviceable, more eflicient and effective in operation, and more economical and easier to manufacture.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the lead or main cam drum 9 is mounted upon the cam shaft 10 and is suitaeneral combly keyed thereto as at 11 and also pinned thereon as indicated at 12. ery adapted to mesh with the worm 23, the latter being diagrammatically indicated in Fig. 1. It will be noted therefore, that the gear rim 17. is also constructed to overlap as at 19 a portion of the connecting disk 14 but make all changes coming within the scope of driving member freely mounte in the disk 14 and a pair of screws 22 located in the worm wheel 16, and registering with the screws 20. The opposed or registering screws are each drilled and cofmterbored to receive a part of a safety pin 21. in the present instance a pair of safety devices are provided and of course it is understoodthat one or more, as desired, may be used. Thus, each safety pin 21 is constructed to connect the disk 14 and worm wheel, and is held in position by means of the opposed screws 20 and 22. I
During operation, in case a strain greater than these pins will stand is placed upon the mechanism of the machine, the pins will shear and inasmuch as the sole connection between the worm wheel on the one hand and the connecting disk 14 and cam drum 9-on the other hand is made by means of.
the safety pin, the result will be that the worm wheel will rotate relatively to the lead cam drum and cam shaft, the latter therefore being idle until the safety pins are replaced.
Thus, it will be readily seen that when the worm 23 drives the worm wheel'or drum 16 by means of the worm gear rim 17, the cam drum 9 will be driven directly through the direct connection 14. It will be understood of course that the main or lead drum 9 controls the operation of the main slide of the machine, and inasmuch as such mechanism is well known in National Acme machines, a description of the same is not deemed necessary herein, as it constitutes no part of this invention.
Although I have described my inventionin its preferred form, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the construction herein shown and described, but may the a pended claims.
I c aim as my invention:
1. The combination of a rotatable shaft, a drum secured thereto, a worm wheel freely mounted upon said shaft, a connecting disk between said drum and wheel and extending from substantially the outer portion of one to substantially the outer portion of the other, means for connecting said disk to said drum, and safety means for connecting said worm wheel to the disk.

between said drivin means for continuously rotating said driving member, a driven member secured to the shaft and spaced laterally from said driving member, and a rin shaped connecting member bridging the space between said driving and driven members and fixedly connected to both thereof at a plurality of points about the axis of said shaft.

The combination of a rotary shaft, a driving member freely mounted thereon, a driven member secured to the shaft in fixed position and a connecting member located and drivenmembers, said connecting mem er having a detachable connection with one of said members and a shearable connection with the other.

driving member freely mounted thereon and comprising a hub and a ring gear fixed thefieto, a driven member secured to the shaft, and a connecting member located between said driving and driven members, and connected to each of said members at a plurality of points, the connections with the driving member comprising shearable elements connected to said hub.

The combination of a rotary shaftfa driving member freely mounted thereon, a driven member secured to the shaft, and a connecting member extending between said drivin and driven members and having sheara le connection with said driving memher, said connecting member being normally fixed to said members. 6. 7. The combination of a pair of spaced rotary members having a common axis of rotation, and means located outside said axis for driving one directly from the other, said means comprising a p urality of outwardly extending arms bridging the space between said members, said arms having fixed connections at both ends with said members, one of the connections being shearable.
8. The combination of a rotary shaft, a driven member secured thereto in fixed position, a driving member rotatable independently of said shaft, means directly'connecting the members together for simultaneous rotation, said,means including a connecting disc fixedly secured to said driven member, and safety mechanism for connecting said disc to sa d driving member.
