Be it known that I, AUSTIN PHILHOWER,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hanover Neck, in the county of Morris and State of vNew Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mandrel for Paper- Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in lo paper making machinery, and has particular reference to a mandrel for winding rolls of paper. as the same is delivered at one end of the paper making machine.
An object of the invention isto provide an improved mandrel, the eective di-v ameter of which may be varied in order tov permit of a kcontraction of said mandrel to facilitate the removal of a roll of paper therefrom.

The mandrel or shaft contemplated by the present invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with paper. making machinery, but it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not confined to such use, but may be employed in other capacities.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 tov 6 inclusive, the numeral 10 indicates the body portion of the mandrel or shaft which is provided at each, extremity thereof with an extension 11 forming a support for the'mandrel when mounted upon the paper'. machine. The bodyl portion of the mandrel is provided with one or more longitudinally extending slots`12, it beingunderstoodthat ythe number of theseslots is optional. v for varying the effective' diameter ofthe mandrel preferably includes al section 13 movable radially or laterally in each of the slots 12 and which, when inits'vnormal o1: inoperative position, is completely recessed within its slot so` that its outer edgefforms a continuation of the periphery of the body of the mandrel, -as shown in full lines in` Figure 2. At suitable intervals the section 13 is provided with notches 14 lwhich register with circumferential grooves 15 in the body 10, "said registering notches and grooves receiving an annular'band 16 which, when the parts are in -the position shown` in Figure 1, is spaced from the'bottomeof its associated notch'll so as to permitfof an outward lateral movement or.l proj ection vof the section 13. The ybands lfare'utilized to'limit the outward lmovement of the lsec-v tion 18 andv also prevent sagging of said section lat intermediate'l portions which mightoccur when extremely long mandrels are used. Each section13 isifurtherlprovided at the endsthereof withthe reduced extensions 17 and 18,' which;underlia'respectively, the annular rings 19l and 20', which are adapted to becontacted bysaid extensions when the sectionV ist'l projected to further aid in limiting the outward movement of the section. Thering 19 isengaged along one of its peripheral edges with the reduced portion 21vformed upon the adjacent end of the body 10 and the other edge of said ring engages aV collar 2,2 secured yto the adjacent extension 11 by means of-setl screwsl or other fasteners 23. The opposite endv of the body 10 is provided inwardly of the extension 11 with the reduced portion 24 upon which the ring 2O is rotatably mounted and to which the ring maybe fixed by a setscrew 25 when thesection or sections 13 are in inoperative or operative positions.' The portion of the `ring between*theedges-thereof is enlarged to' foi-mythe fannula'r-' iariges 26 and 27, the former-v of which engages' another .The meansY reduced portion 28 of the body 10 and which forms a stop against which the extension 18 of the section 13 abuts when said section is projected. 'Ihe flange 27 engages a collar 29 secured to the adjacent extension 11 by the screws 30. e
In order that the effective diameter of the mandrel may be increased preparato-ry to winding a roll of paper thereon, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, means are provided for projecting each section 13 later'- ally or radially with respect to the body 10 and this means preferably includes a slide or key 31 associated with each of the sections and interposed between the inner longitudinal edge of its section and the bottom of the slot 12 in which said section is mounted. The inner surface of each slide or key 31 is provided at intervals with wedge shaped lugs 32 Which, when the slide is in its normal or inoperative position, engage in co-rrespondngly shaped recesses 33 formed in the bottom of the slot 12. The slide or key 31 is designed to be moved longitudinally of the body portion toward the end thereof upon which the ring 20 is mounted and in so doing the same will have imparted thereto a simultaneous diagonal outward movement with respect to the longitudinal axis of the mandrel by reason of the cooperating inclined surfaces of vthe lugs 32 and recesses 33. This outward movement of the slide projects the section 13 outwardly to the position shown in Figure 6.
To accomplish the projection of the sections 13, the extremity of each slide 3l contiguous to the ring 20 is extended beyond the reduced portion 28 and provided with a lateral extension or flange 34 which is disposed diagonally relative to the longitudinal aXis of the slide. lThe inner surface of the enlarged intermediate portion of the ring is provided with one or more helical grooves 35 corresponding in number to the number of slides 31 and each of said grooves is adapted to receive the flange 34 of an associated slide so that when the ring 2O is r0- tated in one direction the inner side walls of the grooves 35 will engage the adjacent surfaces of the flanges 34 and, in a manner which is believed to be obvious, will operate the slides to move the sections 13 outwardly. It will also be apparent that a reverse movement of the ring will cause the slides to move in the opposite direction so that the same will assume their normal positions and permit of the sections 13 being retracted into the slots 12, which operation is effected after the paper has been wound upon the mandrel and preparatory to extracting the mandrel from the roll. When the slides are thus moved in the opposite direction the flanges 34 are engaged bythe opposite side walls of the grooves 35 and said slides are thereby forced back into their inoperative positions with the lugs 32 disposed entirely within the recesses 33.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, a different means is provided for actuating the slides 31. Instead of providing the ends of said slides 31 with the lugs 3a, each slide is formed upon one end with a rack 36 engaged by a spur gear 37 having its ends journaled, respectively, in the body 10 and the ring 20' which, in this instance, may be stationary. The end of the spur gear 37 ournaled in the ring is provided with a lrey opening 38 designed to receive the end of a key 39 which may be inserted into said opening and rotated to impart a similar movement to the gear whereby the associated slide may be reciprocated.
`What I claim is:
1. In a mandrel, a body, a section movable with respect to said body to vary the eifective diameter thereof, -a slide, a ring rotatably carried by the body and having a helical groove therein for receiving an end of said slide whereby the latter is moved longitudinally of the body when said ring is rotated in one direction, and 'means on said slide cooperating with said body to simultaneously move said slide diagonally relative to the body to project said section' laterally therefrom.
2. In a mandrel, a body, a section movable with respect to said body to vary the effective diameter thereof, a slide, a ring rotatably carried by the body and presenting a surface having a slot therein inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the ring for receiving an end of said slide whereby the slide is moved longitudinally of the body when the ring is rotated in one direction, and means for simultaneously moving said slide laterally with respect to the body to radially project said section therefrom.
3. In a mandrel, a body having a longitudinal slot therein, and recesses formed in the bottom of said slot, a section disposed in said slot and movable radially with respect to said body, a slide interposed between said section and the bottom of said slot and provided with lugs cooperating with said recesses to cause a lateral movement of the slide with respect to the body when saidv slide is moved longitudinally of the body, and rings at each end of the body with which said section contacts to limit the outward movement thereof imparted thereto by the lateral movement of the slide, one of said rings being rotatable and provided with a groove therein disposed diagonally with respect to the longitudinal axis of said body and receiving an end of said slide whereby the same is moved longitudinally when said ring is rotated.
4. In a mandrel, a body having a longitudinal slot therein and recesses formed in the bottom of said slot, a section dis osed in said slot and movable radially wit respect to said body, a slide interposed between said section and the bottom of said slot and provided with lugs cooperating with said recesses to cause a lateral movement of the slide with respect to the body when said slide is moved longitudinally of the body, rings at each end of the body with which said section contacts to limit the outward movement thereof imparted thereto by the lateral movement of the slide, one of said rings being rotatable and provided with a groove t erein disposed diagonally with respect to the longitudinal axis of said body and receiving an end of said slide whereby the same is moved longitudinally when said ring is rotated, and a band encircling said body and section intermediate the ends thereof to also limit the outward movement of the section and prevent sagging thereof.
5. In a mandrel, a body, a section movable with respect to said body to vary the effective diameter thereof, a slide interposed between said body and section and extending the length of the latter, said slide having radial and longitudinal movements with respect to said body to move said section to an operative position, and a rotatable member at one end of said body engageable with said slide to operate the same.
6. In a mandrel, a body, a section movable with respect'to said body to vary the effective diameter thereof, a slide interposed between said body and section and extending the length of the latter, said slide having radial and longitudinal movements with respect to said body to move said section to an operative position, a collar secured to one end of said body, and a rotatable member interposed between said collar and the adjacent end of said section and engageable with said slide to operate the same when the member is rotated.
