PAUL SCHMIDT, or SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMMODES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,510, dated March 10, 1874; application filed February 9, 1874.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL SCHMIDT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Chair and Closet, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full, clear, and exact description.-
The object of this invention is to furnish an infants and invalids chair or closet that shall be properly inclosed and connected with some suitable furniture, so that they can be readily brought into use and as readily be inclosed; and it consists in the peculiar and judicious arrangements of all its parts which, in their different positions, perform their functions, and bring into use all available space.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a wash-stand containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of same as it appears when opened for an invalids chair or closet, with the door open to show the place for a vessel or reservoir. Fi 3 is a sectional view of the stand when opened and in position for an invalids chair or closet. Fig. 4 is a top view of the stand with the lid raised, showing the guard for a child when placed in the chair. Fig. 5 is a top view of the infants seat. Fi 6 is the same with part of the infants seat removed to show the seat for an adult. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of its inside arrangements.
at a are the guards for a child when placed in the chair. a a are stays or braces attached to the guards at a. I) is the infants seat. 0 is the seat for an adult. d is a loose shelf in the closet or vault c. c is a closet or vault. f is a drawer in the lid. g is a front piece attached to the lid by hinges. 43 1; are stays or braces attached to the back of the lid, which, when the lid is raised, pass through openings in the rear of the stand into the hollow space on each side of the seat, and abut against the coveringpiece of this space, thereby holding the lid in an upright position. 8 is the lid. NVhen all these parts are put in the position shown in Fig. 4, the lid can be closed, presenting then the appearance shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the infants chair, the lid s is raised, carrying with it the front piece g,- then the guards to a, which are hinged on thesides, are thrown back, as shown in Fi 5; and when the child is placed on the seat b, the guards at a are folded around it.
When a closet is required for an adult, the guards at a are opened and turned out on each side, and the infants seat, being hinged on the back edge, is turned up against the lid 8, as shown in Figs 2 and 3, the seat I) forming the back, and the stays a n on the guards a a the arms, of the chair thus formed.
The seat 0 is stationary. All the movable parts can as readily be folded and turned back into their places, and the lid 8 closed over them, covering and hiding all inside arrangements, and presenting the wash stand as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that by this simple, yetjudicious, arrangement three useful pieces of furniture are combined, either of which can be readily brought into use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The guards a' a, constructed and arranged so that they can be made to answer either as guards for an infant when placed in the chair, or as arms for the invalids chair, substantially in the manner described.
2. In combination with the guards to a, the hinged infants seat 11, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a closet for an adult with an infants chair, guards for an infant, and wash-stand or other suitable furniture, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name and aflixcd my seal in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 5th day of February, .1874.
