Description

c.. w. 'sALADEl-L Vehicle Wheels.
wiTNEssEs l INVENTOR..
1'Nrriin STATES CYRUS W". SALADEE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
lIMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,505, dated Marrh 10,1874; application filed February 6, 1874.
CAsn C.
To all whom lit may concer/n:
Be it known that I, CYRUs W. SALADEE, of Pittsburg, in the State ot' Pennsylvania,
I have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vheels for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification embodying my invention:
My present invention in Wheels for Vehicles consists in au improved method of securing metallic tubular spokes in the metallic annulus of the hub, and has for its object greater strength in this connection than has ever yet, to my knowledge, been secured. Tubular spokes are generally screwed into the metallic hub or annulus, but cutting the thread on the ends of the thin tubes partially cuts them oft', and thereby weakens theln at the very point where they should have the greatest possible degree of strength.
- The ends of the tubular spokes E entering the hub have two longitudinal slits out therein at right angles across the diameter, (see Figure 25,) so as to divide the end of the tube longitudinally into four equal parts. This done, a conical-shaped pin, D, of hard wood, is placed in the split end ofthe tube, and as it is driven home the conical-sl'laped pin, serving as a wedge, will spread the tube and firmly wedge it against the sides of the conical-shaped hole in the metallic annulus, and by this peculiar combination of wood and-metal the. tubular spokes will be securely and firmly held in their position, as is plainly seen in the drawings, Figs. l and 3. rlhe outer ends of the tubular spokes E are secured in the rim P of the wheel by means of a metallic pin having a solid collar, O, formed at its center, which collar serves as a shoulder between the end of the tube and the inside face ofthe rim. This is seen in Fig. 2, where P is the rim; E, the end of the tube; N N, the pin with solid central collar, O, one end of the pin N entering the tube E, and the other end N the hole in the rim P, thus making the collar O serve as a shoulder' between these parts, as above stated.
I claim as my invention- 1. In wheels for vehicles, the metallic tubular spokes E, with longitudinal slits in the ends entering the hub, and in combination with the conical-shaped pin D and metallic annulus A, substantiallyT as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the outer end of the tubular spoke E and rim P, the pin N N, with central solid collar O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
