Description
Feb. 26, 1924;
L. H. SPRINKLE ARTIFICIAL TOQTH Filed Dec. 13 1922 INVENTOR LHKE H.Sl Yi72/KZ BY HIS ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 26, 1924.
LAKE H; srmnn, or BRCGK LYE NEW YOBK.
ARTIFICIAL Tooanf Application filed December 1 3;'1922":' Seria1Nof GO6;648.'
- lowing is a specification.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described and the objects of it are:
First: To produce the facing of an artificial tooth, which has no pins burned into the body thereof, to avoid injuring pins of any metal other than platinum.
Second: To provide a means for firmly uniting pins of any suitable metal or alloy to the facing of an artificial tooth after it is burned.
Third: To have said artificial tooth simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive.
I attain these objects by the artificial tooth shown in the accompanying drawings, or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section on the line 11 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 2 is rear view or elevation of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the two views:
11 designates the facing of an artificial tooth having formed in the rear thereof an opening or cavity, shown in Figure 1 as filled by the members 12, 14 and 16.
The said cavity has an undercut at the inner end thereof, as shown in both figures of the drawing. 12 and 14 are the bases of the pins 13 and 15 respectively; at their inner ends said bases 12 and 14 have the anchors 18 and 19 respectively which are shaped to fill the part of the undercut of the cavity adjacent thereto, and the space between the said bases 12 and 14 is filled by the slightly tapered key 16; the taper of the said key 16 may be so proportioned as to retain said bases 12 and 14 with their anchors 18 and 19 in position after the key 16 is pressed home therebetween; to achieve that purpose the taper of the key 16 must not exceed a certain limit, in accordance with the laws or rules of machine design; the limiting value of the taper is approximately shown as in Figure 1 of the drawing.
It is intended that in practice the actual taper of the key 16 shall be less than that shown in the drawings.
To insure the ample pressing home of the key 16, I provide the clearance 17 at the inner end thereof bymaking the key 16 somewhat shorter than each of the bases 12 and 14 with their anchors 18 and 19.
The pins 13 and 15 are preferably made may be made to extend beyond the rear of r the facing 11, as shown in Figure 1, or
it may be made nearly flush with said rear,-
if desired.
Instead of anchoring the bases of both pins 13 and 15 in the same cavity as shown, each pin may be secured in a separate cavity if desired, by providing an extra base with an anchor and without a pin to cooperate with the base of each pin and a separate tapered key for securing the extra base with the base of each pin in position, as by removing the pin 13 fromthe'base 12, and employing the base 12 with the key 16 to secure the base 14 with the pin 15 in position. Instead of placing the pins 13 and 15 with their bases 12 and 14 and the key 16 on the line 11 in Figure 2, they may be placed on a line at right angles to the line l-1, if desired. Many other changes could be made in the details of my artificial tooth without departing from the main scope of my invention.
I do not therefore restrict myself to the details as shown but I intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably obvious modifications of the same within the scope of my invention.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: o
1. In an artificial tooth, a facing having formed therein a cavity, an undercut at the inner end of said cavity, one or more pins having each aabase with an anchor at the inner end thereof, said anchor being adapted to engage said undercut and a member, adapted to actas a key pressed against said base in said cavity, thereby securing said base in position.
2. In an artificial tooth, a facing having formed therein a cavit an undercut at the inner end of said cavity, one or more pins having each a base with an anchor at the inner end thereof, said anchor being adapted to engage said undercut, and av tapered key for securing said base in position, the taper of said key being such as to cause said key to be retained in position after being pressed home into position.
3. In an artificial tooth a facing having 5 formed therein a cavity, an undercut at the inner end of said cavity, a pair of pins having each a base at the inner end thereof,
7 and an anchor at the inner end of each of said bases, said anchors being adapted to engage said undercut, combined with a tapered key adapted to be pressed into position between said base-s, thereby securing the same in said cavity.
