IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR SHEARING METAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,495, dated March 10, 1874; application filed February 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES M. ROBINSON, of Newton, in the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Outtin g Iron and Steel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top v1ew.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the bedplate, provided with holes a, by which it may be fastened to a table or other support. B B are the knives, and C G the lever-holders, each of the knives and holders being correspondingly constructed with rounded concavities at b and c, to receive and allow to be cut a round bolt or bar, while anangular bar may be supported and cut upon their straight edges. D is the yoke or upright, across and through which passes the bolt E, that holds the levers C O', pivoted thereto, and is itself secured by a nut. F is a handlever, made in the form of an obtuse angle, and pivoted at the vertex f to the end of knifeholder C, while the fulcrum end is pivoted between the upper ends of straps G G, the end of knife-holder C being pivoted between the lower ends of said straps. I thus not only obtain a compound lever by conjoining the two levers C F, but, by pivoting both levers C F in the same straps G G, the lever F is accommodated with a movable fulcrum, and allowed to be carried back over the holders O O.
The cutters B B come together along the whole length of their edges when the lever F reaches the top of yoke D. This brings the whole tool into a very small, compact, and convenient form, while the handle end of lever is always within easy reach of a man of ordinary size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, as shown and described, of the bed-plate A, standard D, levers C C', provided with knives B B', connecting-links G, and hand-lever F.
