LABEL-AFFIXING SEWING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MORRIS G. Rosnrvrrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Aiiixing Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in label-afixing sewing machines.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide as in a sewing machine attachment means for eifectively applying and holding a patch or label directly on the body part of a garment without intermediate supporting devices.
Second, as an incident of such main object to provide for the holding of a label so that it may be stitched very close to the ed es.

The objects of the invention are accomplished by the devices and means described in the specification and the invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. 7

In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the sectional lines, and similar numerals of reference referred to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawings, 1 is the bed of the machine, 2 the work holder plate, 3 the lower part of the sewing machine head, 4 the main work clamp, 5 the label retaining shoe or presser foot, and 6 the label slide or chute through which the label is delivered. 7 is the label follower disposed in the label chute 6 and has downwardly projecting fingers 8 which engage the rear edge of the label and carry the same forward to the deflectable label supports, hereafter to be described.
A post 9 is secured to this follower extending upwardly therefrom. On the post 9 is pivoted the latch lever 10 by pivot 11. An actuating spring 12 is secured to loop 10 on said lever, and is connected to post 13 on the said main work clamp 4;. Lever 10 is provided with an upwardly extending finger hook 14 for convenient manipulation by the finger of the operator and is provided with a latch catch 15 on its under side that engages over the front end of the label chute to hold the label follower in retracted position.
On the side of the sewing machine head 3 is secured a stop arm '17 having a downwardly projecting portion 18 to engage the forward end 16 of the latch lever 10. The relation of these parts clearly appears in Figs. VI, VII and VIII in the different steps of their operation. An adjustable stop 19 is secured in place by the set screw 20 to limit the forward advance of the label follower and insure accurate delivery of the fed label.
This description thus far given is identical with that appearing in my Letters Patent No. 1,389,598 dated September 6, 1921, to which I refer for more clear understanding of details.
The main work clamp t corresponds to what is there called the label support, and in the present structure the mian work clamp does not serve as the label support when the label is applied, the projecting label supporting ledge of that structure be ing entirely eliminated. The label chute is here extended to a point underneath the label presser foot, which is rectangular in form to permit the stitching to occur within the engaging portion thereof.
The inner ends of said chute are provided with deflectable label supports 22, provided with stops 23 to limit the movement of and locate the label when it is fed in. The deflectable stop 22 is supported by finger 24 having cross arm projections 25 at its upper end. The cross arm projections are. loosely supported on projecting ledges 26 and are retained in place by downwardly projecting portions 27 on retaining plates 28 which are held in place by suitable screws.
Springs 29 are in sockets 30 at each side and hold the deflectable label supports yieldingly in position. The stops 23 are provided with cam surfaces 23' which are engaged by projections 5 on the sides of the label presser foot. The loose connection of the cross arm projections 25 above the ledge 26 permits the withdrawal of the deflectable label supports 22 when the label prcsser foot is lowered 1111.0 engaging position so that the deflectable parts swing from beneath the label as indicated in Fig. II, and the presser foot clamps the edge of the label about the aperture 1n the work holder plate 2.
The needle is not shown upon the sewing machine but very clearly the label is closely I clamped upon the fabric of the garment or article being labeled and the stitching can be directly therethrough and in close proximity to the edge, and because the label is supported in direct contact with the article being labeled there is no undue deflection ,of the needle, and the stitching i very close to the edge.
The labels made use of are preferably slightly starched or otherwise treated, if the fabric is not suflicientlystifi, so that they may be delivered and effectively supported by the defiectable supports at the ends of the label only, it being unnecessary to provide any supports for the longitudinal sides of the label.
From this description it is believed that the functions of the various parts will be understood when the operation is definitely pointed out. The sectional view of Fig. VI shows the machine after the stitching operation and after the label is removed ready to begin operations for the next label. The operator by the hook 14- withdraws the latch lever 10 into engagement by notch 15 with the front end of the label chute 6, thereby withdrawing the label follower 7 into label receiving position. The label 21 is then placed in the position seen in side view in Fig. VII, and is ready to be fed under the label retaining foot and onto the deflectable label supports when the machine is manipulated.
The main work clamp and label foot are then elevated by means described and re ferred to in the said patent above referred to, and the label is fed to the position shown in Fig. VIII. The catch 15 is then on top of the chute in a disengaged position.
The garment or article 31 to be labeled (see Figs. II and IX) is now inserted beneath the main work clamp 1 and underneath the label. The main work clamp and the label presser foot are then lowered onto the article to be labeled. The main work clamp clamps first and the label presser foot 5 then descending acts upon the cam surfaces 23 and deflects the label supports 22 to each side, as indicated in Fig. II, withdrawing the same from beneath the label and permitting the label presser foot to clamp the label directly against the work plate holder 2'. The stitching'operation is then accomplished in the well known manner herein referred to and indicated.
I have referred to the main work c amp herein and have adopted that term because the clamp holds the main work; that is, the body of the garment to which the label'is attached. It is not necessary that this clamp serve as a presser foot to closely engage the garment because if there are buttons or knots or heavy seams on' any part ofthe garment or article to be labeled, they may be engaged by this clamp which will thus not engage the fabric at all at the point where it is to be stitched.
I have provided clearance all around the label presser foot so that it can drop considerably below the main work clamp. It is shown somewhat below in Figs. VI and VII, but the clearance is such that if the main work clamp were obstructed by a knot 1 ,asescs or seam it could be held relatively much higher than appears in Figs. VI or VII because it is held down by independent elastic pressure, and the independent elastic pressure on the label presser foot would acoomm'odate that to the body fabric beneath so that the label is clamped entirely independently of the main work clamp and is held by the label presser foot.- By this means any seat for the label when it is clamped is entirely obviated, the label being clamped against the perfectly flat work holder plate by the presser foot entirely independent of any other lamping means.
While I have shown this improvement in connection with the semi-automatic label feeding devices of my former patent, I de sire to state that the improvement is available where the label is fed entirely by hand or where the label is fed in by the manual manipulation of the label feed follower or where the same is released manually instead of automatically, as there described. This invention does not pertain to that means. I have shown the invention in connection therewith as being in the preferred form, and it is of course desirable to provide my improved deflectable supports in connection with the sides of a label feeding slide, as that greatly facilitates the placing of labels upon the deflectable supports.
While I have referred to the machine as a label attaching machine I wish to say that the term label is intended to include patches of various descriptions which are often applied for reenforcement. The label preferably used is one in which all sides are seamed or folded. However, many labels are made from strips having a selvage on both sides and the ends only need to be folded, and it is possible that under certain conditions even the ends need not be folded. By the term label I include all of these devices and patches of all descriptions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be aflixed, a main work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, a label chute or slide on said main work clamp delivering to the front of said opening therein, a label follower in said chute or slide for feeding labels into said opening and above the aperture of the work holder plate in position to be stitched, deflectable label supports carried by the main work clamp and disposed at opposite sides and above the said aperture of the work holder plate and within the opening of said main work clamp, cam means on the said defleet-able supports, a label presser foot rectangular in form disposed to act upon the said label, and. cam actuating parts on the said label presser foot to cooperate with the said cam means and cam the deflectable supports from beneath the label when the label is clamped in place for stitching, coacting as specified.
2. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be affixed, a main work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, a label chute or slide on said. main work clamp delivering to the front of said opening therein, deflectable label supports carried by the main work clamp and disposed at opposite sides and above the said aperture of the work holder plate and withing the opening of said main work clamp, cam means on the said deflectable supports, a label presser foot rectangular in form disposed to act upon the said label, and cam actuating parts on the said label presser foot to cooperate with the said cam means and cam the deflectable supports from beneath the label when the label is clamped in place for stitching, coacting as specified.
3. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be affixed, a main work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, a label chute or slide on said main work clamp delivering to the front of said opening therein, a label follower for feeding labels into said opening in position to be stitched, deflectable label supports carried by the main work clamp to receive the label from the said chute, a label presser foot disposed to engage the said label, and means coacting therewith for deflecting the label supports.
4. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be affixed, a main work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, a label chute or slide on said main work clamp delivering to the front of said opening therein, deflectable label supports carried by the main work clamp to receive the label from the said chute, a label presser foot disposed to engage the said label, and means coacting therewith for deflecting the label supports.
5. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be aflixed, a main Work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, defiectable label supports carried by the main work clamp and disposed at opposite sides and above the said aperture of the work holder plate and within the opening of said main work clamp, cam means on the said defleotable supports, a label presser foot rectangular in form disposed to act upon the said label, and cam actuating parts on the said label presser foot to cooperate with the said cam means and cam the deflectable supports from beneath the label when the label is clamped in place for stitching, coacting as specified.
6. In a machine for stitching labels, the combination of a work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be affixed, a main work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, deflectable label supports carried by the main work clamp to receive the label, and a label presser foot disposed to engage the said label, and means coacting therewith for deflecting the label supports.
7. In a machine for stitching labels, the
combination of a Work holder plate with an aperture therein corresponding to the label to be aflixed, a main Work clamp with an opening corresponding to the aperture in said work holder plate disposed to clamp the label to the work holder at the edge of said aperture, deflectable label supports dis posed at the bottom and within the opening in the main work clamp, a label presser foot disposed to act upon the said label, and means for deflecting the label supports, as specified.
8.
