Description

Feb. 26 19240 W. E. LYQN CHICKEN BROODER Filed Sept. 25, 1922 IN V EN TOR.
A TTORNEX'.
Patented Feb. 26, E924;
WILLIAM ERNEST LYON, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
vCHIGKEN BRO'ODER.
Application filed September 25, 1922. Serial No. 590,365.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM ERNEsT LYON, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at San Diego, county of San Diego,
rearing young chickens and other birds lid The member .5 is provided with a pluralwhich have been'hatched from eggs in incubators, and the objects of my invention .are to provide an electrically heated apparatus which may be utilized for brooding purposes, that is automatic in its action, one in which the heating unit may be operated from the ordinary electric service wires.
With this object in View, my invention consists of certain novel features of con struction, combination and'arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the ap pended claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which.-
Figure 1 is a sectional View at 1-1 of Figure 2; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the top of my brooder; Fig. 3 is a plan view at 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an upward plan view at 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of Fig. 1, and
F ig. 6 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of the electrical wiring and connections.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several-views of the drawings. I
The roof nemben a is circular in form and slopes" from the center downwardly and is supported on the member Z). A curtain is mounted on the rim d of member a and is of a suflicient length to reach almost to the floor 'on which the brooder stands. The member I) is circular in form, as shown best in Fig. 4 and is provided with a closed ceiling b which is covered with an insulat- .ing material 72 and a curtain b which is ,fastened to wall b of member I) and extends down to near the floor on whi h the brooder stands. v
ity of legs 6 which rest on the floor where the brooder stands.
A tubular member f is mounted in the center of the roof member a and in the ceiling b and extends to near the floor on which the brooder stands. The member 7 is provided with a plurality of openings 9. The member f is adapted to provide ventilation for the brooder and for the purposeof regulating the ventilation it is provided with an adjustable vent member h.
Mounted on the ceiling b by supports 6 is a curved electrical heating element which is operatively connected to an elec- ;trical current by means of wires 70, and said wires 76 are also connected with the electric light bulbs m and the pilot light a which is operatively connected with the heating element j.
- There is also provided in the ceiling b? a double glass observation window a which is located immediately below the door a which is located on the roof member a. The heating element 7' is provided with a circuit breaker a which is adapted to 0 en and close the electricourrent to the heating element by the operating of the thermostatic switch 3. The ceiling member 6 is provided with an opening a which is adapted to receive and hold a thermometer (not shown in drawings) which is adapted to indicate the temperature in the brooder.
It will thus be noted that my invention provides a primary hover circular in-shape over which a cone-shaped secondary top is placed and supported on the primary hover, thereby creating above the ceiling b an air space which assists in keeping an even temperature in the primary hover immediately below the ceiling b and also provides a secondary hover between the curtains 0 and 6 that by means of the curved electric heating element j the heat is distributed over a very large area, thus keeping the temperature even in all parts of the hover; that by means of the door a and the double window a it is possible to seeinside the hover without allowing the cold air to get to the chicks, that by the means of control described the heat may be kept uniform in thebrooder at all times.
Though I have\ shown and described a particular construction and arrangement of- T do not wish to hated to thls articular construction and arrangement,
ut desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the following claims 1. A chicken brooder comprising a primary hover, a roof member mounted over said primary hover and extending beyond said rimary hover and provided with a curtaln to form a secondary hover around said primary hover, a curved heating element mounted in said primary hover near the perimeter thereof, means for connecting said heating element with a heat supply source, an automatic means for controlling the amount of heat in said brooder mounted therein, a double transparent Window mounted in the ceiling of said primary hover, a door hinged on said roof member immediately over said window, and an adjustable ventilator means mounted in the center of said primary hover.
meaaaa 2. A circular brooder consisting of an innerand an outer hover, separated from eachother by a circular wall, with passageway beneath said circular wall, a curved heating element mounted in the ceiling of said inner hover near its perimeter, light ing means -mounted in said ceiling, said heatin element and said lighting means 0 erative y connected with an electric supp y source, a door mounted in the roof of said outer hover immediately over a double transparent Window mounted in the ceiling of said inner hover, and a thermostat with an automatic heat control mounted in the said ceiling.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM ERNEST LYON.
