PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES EUGENE G. LOVELACE, OF HIGH POINT, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-FURTH TO TOM GIANOULIS .AND ONE-FOURTH TO B. J. WAGGER, BOTH OI HIGH POINT,
NORTH CAROLINA.
HEDGE TRIMMER.
Application led April 18, 19234 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE G. LovnLAoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hedge Trimmers, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hedge trimmers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the reciprocating cutter or blade is carried by a head, said head being capable of adjustable connection with a supporting member whereby the hedge may be trimmed at a side or cut at any special angle as may be desired.
It is also an object of the invention to provide anovel and improved device of this general character embodying means whereby a handle or hand grasp may be arranged in different positions as best suits the convenience of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the crank and its connection with the reciprocating cutter are encased or enclosed so that hindrance or obstruction Will not be offered thereto during a working operation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hedge trimmer whereb certain im portant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In o-rder that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in plan with a portion broken away of a hedge trimmer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the structure as illustrated in Figure l;
Serial No. 632,899.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken substantially en the line 3-8 of Figure l.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated rod or member provided at its outer end with a cross head 2 to facilitate the operation of the device. The opposite end portion of the rod or member 1 is connected with a bracket 3 which is also connected with an elongated tubular member 4, said members i and 1 being longitudinally aligned.
Rotatably supported by the bracket 3 is a pinion 5 meshing with a gear wheel 6, said gear wheel 6 being rotatably supported by a bearing 7 of the member or rod 1 at a point in relatively close proximity to the bracket 3. The gear wheel 6 is provided with an operating crank 8 whereby the same may be manually operated.
Carried by the bearing 7 and disposed in a direction away from the gear wheel 6 is a iandle or hand grasp 9. If preferred how ever this handle or hand grasp 9 may be disposed in a position substantially parallel with the rod or member 1 and in order to provide for such mounting the end portion of the bracket 3 immediately adjacent to the member or rod 1 is provided with the outstanding and perpendicularly related arm 10 arranged at the side of the bracket 3 opposite to the gear wheel 6. The handle member 9 may be readily secured in a conventional manner to the outer end portion,
of said arm 10. The pinion 5 is fixed to the inner end portion of a shaft 11 which extends entirely through the member t and terminates a desired distance outwardly thereof for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The cutting mechanism proper comprises a head H comprising a pair of overlying sections 12 and 14 and said head H is prowided with the Outstanding fingers 15 of a conventional type.
The sections 12 and 14 are maintained in overlying or assembled relation through the instrumentality of the holding screws 16 or the like.
The head H at the central portion thereof and at its rear is provided with an outstanding extension 17 providing a chamber 18. The chamber 18 adjacent one end is provided with an outstanding boss 19 the bore of which being in communication with the chamber 18. The boss 19 has threaded thereon a nut 2O provided at its outer end with an inwardly directed flange V21 freely surrounding the member 11 and adapted to have contact with the inner face of the outstanding annular shoulder 22 carried by the outer end of the member 11. r1`he nut 20 is also provided with the outstanding preferably diametrically opposed arms 23 to facilitate the rotation thereof. The nut 2O provides means whereby the head lrl is coupled to the outer end of the member 11.
llfhen the head ll is applied to the member the shaft 11 extends through the boss 19 and partially within the chamber 18. rlhe inner portion of the boss 19 having inserted therein a bearing` 24 for said shaft.
Fixed to the extremity of the shaft 11 within the chamber 18 is a crank disc 25 in which is operatively engaged a pitman 26. The pitinan 26 is also operatively engagged as at 2'?" with the cutting,` knife or blade 28 of a conventional type wherein the ontstanding,l teeth 29 are employed.
is is particularly illustrated in Figure 1 it is to be noted that the crank 25 and the pitman 26 at all times are housed or contained within the chamber 18 so that said parts are effectively protected against hindrance or obstruction during a working operation. lt is also to be noted that the chamber 18 is of a length to permit the blade 28 to have requisite stroke which is suii'icient to cause the teeth 29 of said blade to travel across the spaces between adjacent fingers 15.
By loosening the nut 20 the head l-l can be readily turned or adjusted to any desired angle with respect to the member 11 whereby a hedge may be readily trimmed at the sides or at any angle desired and that said adiustment will be effectively maintained upon tightening` of the nut 20. This adjustment of the head lil in one way effects the normal or general handling of the implement and my improved trimmer is therefore particularly adapted for use by persons unskilled or inexperienced in the trimmingof, hedges.
From the foregoing description it is throught to be obvious that ahedge trimmer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that'my raar-mee invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing` from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in piactice except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim 1. 'rin implement of the class described comprising` a head, a reciprocating cutting,` blade associated therewith, a tubular meniber, means for coupling` the head to the tubular member, said head being adjustable about the tubular member as an airis, coupling means operating to hold the lined with respect to the tubular ni and means for reciprocatingI the blade.
