unirse stares WILLIAM Si. MCDNALD,
OF SIOUX CITY, IOJVA.
FOUIJTATN PEN,
Application filed April 26,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, l/VILLIAM J. Mo- DoNALD, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful `improvements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention aims to provide an improved self-lling fountain pen.
iother object of the invention is the production in a self-filling pen of the elastic sack type of improved means for compressing the sack.
A further object of the invention is the 'production of an improved, self-filling fountain pen, comparatively inexpensive in production, yet thoroughly eliicient and depend able in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the yinvention consists in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts, which will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanyingy drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a fountain pen constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, sack being compressed.
Fig. 8 is a plan of the pen. Y
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan of the collapsible sack.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the presser bar and saclr.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section thereof, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of the collapsible sack and a modified form of the presser bar, and
`Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Although l have illustrated and hereinafter described but two embodiments suitable for practising the invention, l would not be understood as being limited to such specific constructions for various modifications and alterations may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
the collapsible i920. Serial no. 37eme.
Referring now to the illustrations, 9 represents the usual fountain pen holder or barrel, having a bore, 10,4 in one end of which is removably inserted a familiar type of plug, 11, carrying the pen point, 12, and provided with a duct, 13, which, it will be understood, communicates with the feed, 14, associated with the pen point.
The barrel encloses an elongated tube, 15, of rubber or other suitable elastic material and in one end of which is inserted the plug, 11. Y
On the top of the tube is cemented or otherwise secured an elongated metal strip, 16, which is preferably concave-convex in transverse section, which extends substantially from the free end of the sack to the end of the plug, 11. ln the preferred form the center of the strip, 16, is provided with a longitudinally disposed groove, 17, the bottom of which declines from the ends of the slot on the surface of the strip and towards the center, forming an angle, 18, at the center of the bottom of the groove. immediately above the groove, 17, the barrel, 9, is provided with a longitudinal slot, 19, in which is positioned a short finger lever, 20, which osoillates on 'a pivot pin, 21, extending transversely through the finger-lever 20, directly above the angle, 18, and has its end portions embedded in the portions of the barrel at the sides of the slot, 19.
he members, 20 and 21, are so formed and related that the linger-lever, 20, normally approximately fills the slot, 19, and by rotation the linger-lever, 20, may be turned end for end within the slot, and normally the face of the finger-lever is flush with the periphery of the barrel, 9.
Vlhe ends of the linger-lever, 20, are grcoved as at 22, and the ends of the slot, 19, communicate with relatively short transverse grooves, 23, in the surface of the barrel, 9, to permit the insertion of a persons finger nail into the grooves, 22, of the fingerlever to facilitate operation of the fingerlever as will presently appear. Normally, the elastic saclr, 15, holds the presser-bar, 16, against the inner periphery of the barrel and kagainst the under side of the lingerlever,V 20, firmly yet yieldably holding the said linger-lever against movement.
lt will nowr be observed that by turning the finger-lever, 20, to a vertical position, as clearly shown in Figure 2, the sack, 20,
will be completely compressed and the air therein expelled. rllhen, by inserting the pen-carrying plug in an ink-well and restoring the finger-lever, 20, to its normal position, it is clear the sack will be completely filled with inlr. Obviously, the fingerlever, 20, may be lifted at either end, and in its vertical position its lower end seats in the lowest portion of the groove, 17.
rlhe modification presented in Figures 7 and `8 differs from the preferred form only in that, in lieu ofthe groove, 17, the center portion of the presser-bar, 16, is provided with a longitudinal rib 24E, the end portions of which are inclined from the surface of the bar, 16, toward the center of the rib, as at 25, and the ends of the bar, 20, in addition Ato the grooves, 22, are provided with transverse grooves, 26, disposed at right angles to the grooves, 22, and so formed as to slidably receive the rib, 2li, when the bar, 20, is being moved to a vertical position to depress the presser-bar.
It is clear that the irregular surface provided on the presser bar, (that is, the recessed angle, 18, in the preferred forni, and the angled rib, 24, of the modification) serves as a detent which is engaged by the finger lever and prevents accidental movement of the same beyond its vertical position.
lt will also be observed that a half revolution of the finger-lever, in either direction, will compress and fill the tube with ink.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Stat-es is:
1. A fountain pen including a barrel having a slot, an interior ink sack and a presser bar therefor, a depressing lever arranged in said slot and having a central pivot axis whereby the lever may be moved to permit either end thereof to engage the presser bar to collapse the ink sack.
2. A fountain pen including a barrel having a slot, an interior ink sack and a presser bar therefor, a depressing lever arranged in said slot and having a central pivot axis, whereby the lever may move continuously in a circular path to permit opposite ends thereof to alternately engage the ink sack. Y
3. A fountain-pen embodying a barrel, a collapsible tube therewithin, a presser-bar on the tube, the barrel being slotted longitudinally above the presser-bar, and la finger-lever centrallj,7 pivoted in the slot, whereby the ends of the lever may be successively brought into contact with the presser-bar by rotating the lever in a continuous, circular path, to compress the tube, the tube being of elastic material to hold the presser-bar normally yieldably against the barrel and the underside of the finger-lever, and restore the finger-lever toits normal position. V
al. A fountain-pen embodying a barrel,
a collapsible tube therewitliin, a presser-bar y on the tube, the barrel being slotted longitudinally above the presser-bar, and a finger-lever cei'itrally pivoted in the slot to rotate in either direction therein in a continuous circular path and alternately engage with its ends the presser-bar to compress the tube, the tube being of elastic material to hold the presser-bar normally yieldably against the barrel and the under side of the finger-lever, and restore the latter to its normal position.
5. A fountain-pen embodying a barrel, a collapsible tube therewithin, a presser-bar thereon, the barrel being slotted above the presser-bar, and a finger-lever centrally pivoted in the slot to rotatey in a continuous circular path and successively engage with its ends the presser-bar to compress the tube, said lever having transverseV horizontal grooves inits ends, and the barrel having recesses to admit a persons finger-nail into said grooves'. v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23rd day of April, 1920.
WILLIAM J. MenoNALn.
