To all fr/0m t may Concern Be it known that l, JOHN VILLIAM RYAN, residing at Gledhow Mount, Harehills Lane, Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful mprovement in Gill Eoxes or Frames, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to gill boxes and like machines used in the treatment of librous substances of that class of said machilies wherein the gilling members or fallers are actuated by rotary screws. In this type or class of machine the fallers extend from side to side thereof to engage with their operating` screws, the upper pair of which carry said fallers t-o travel over guiding bars until the ends of their paths are reached on which, by cam action, they are forced down and fall from the position upon the upper guiding bars down into position upon the lower guiding bars in which position they engage with the lower pair of screws which return them to their initial positions.
This falling of the metal bars or fallers from their higher to their lower positions causes great deterioration as Well as damage due to jamming or other defective actions. ln accordance with my invention, to obviate these defects I make use of devices which will receive each faller under resilient action in a horizontal direction and also in its vertical descent so that the sudden arresting and free fall of the faller are entirely prevented and all concussione' and deleterious forces are eliminated thus preventing excessive wear and abrasion of those parts that have heretofore been found to be most liable to such actions. The said devices also are capable of adjustment to meet any slight e0 alterations or abrasione that may occur, by which means the operating parts may at all ltirnes be readily adjusted and kept in proper working order.

To attain the object of my invention I make use of'two bu'er springs 2 which are mounted at the end of the fallers path over the upper guides 6, one of said springs being situated on one side of the machine while the other is situated on the other side there of in known manner. Only one of such springs is shown in the accompanying drawings the other being on the opposite side of the machine. These springs 2 extend in positions vertically adjacent to the ends a o of thev screws 3 and l to receive the fallers 5 as these latter travel in their horizontal paths over the upper guiding bars 6, and said springs 2 are so shaped that each of them may be fixed to the outer ends of levers 7 which are pivoted beneath or lower than the guides or slides 6 and 8 which conduct or guide the fallers 5 through their upper and lower horizontal paths of motion respectively. Each of the these levers 7 is pivoted at d near the end upon which the spring 2 is fixed and each of said levers 7 is arranged to extend horizontally adjacent the lower screw 4 so that its outer end 7L may have mounted upon it an eye-bolt 9 which is provided withcheck nut adjustments f, g and connected at t to a lever 10. The connections of the check nuts and pivoted bolt are of such character as will enable slight oscillations of the lever and its bolt without binding action.
The lever l0 (one being situated on each side of the machine) is pivoted at 7c upon bearings l1 which are `beyond the pivot v., so that an extension LOE of the lever 10 may have mounted upon it a counterbalancing weight 12, this weight l2 being adjustable so that it may be regulated for purposes hereinafter explained. The levers l0 on each side of the machine extend into proximity to the ends ci of the levers 7 or into alignment with the path through which the fallers 5 travel when moving or descending from engagement with the screws 3 to their engagement with the screws 4l.
Upon the said extending ends of these levers l0 are mounted pivoted rods 13 which extend through and slide within guiding slides la at each side of the machine so that the upper ends of these rods 13 may operate or move in the vertical paths which the fallers follow when descending as before described.
By this arrangement of the devices on each side of the machine the resilient buffer springs -2 with which each faller 5 comes into contact at the end of its upper horizontal path when travelling over the guiding bars 6, act as yielding buffers during the said short portion of the horizontal movements of said allers, while when the screws 3 operating said fallers continue to move the same horizontally causing the said springs 2 to raise the extending ends 7a of the levers 7 so that these levers will raise (by their eye-bolts 9) the arms of the levers l() and also the sliding bolts 13 to bring them into their raised position to receive the liallers 5 thereon. lVhen the :tallers have thus reached a position over the upper ends of the vertical rods 13 the cams which operate and force down lsaid allers in well known manner, cause the rods 1B, which are counterbalanced by the weights l2, lo move downward and the fallers are carried from the plane of their upper path te that `ot their lower path under `conditions that eliminate all the concussions and therefone reduce Vto a minimum the liability of wear in any of the parts.
Such being the nature and object of my said invention what I claim is l,v In a. gill box or frame, the combina.- tion with upper and lower horizontal taller guides, faller bars, and screws adapted to move said'bars along the guides, of a yielding arm extendinginto the path of'thc taller bars as they are successively forced from the upper guide, and means connected with said arm 'for receiving the bar as it leaves the upper guide and supporting it while' moving downward to the plane o t the Vlower guide.

In a gill box or frame, the combination with upper and lower horizontal faller guides, faller bars, and screws adapted to mOve Said bars along the guides, of a lever mounted below and extending longitudinally of the screws, a yielding arm attached to the lever and extending upward into the path of the l'aller bars as they are successively pushed from the upper guide by the co-operating screw, said lever being rocked about its ulcrum by pressure exerted on the arm by the taller bar passing from the upper guide, and a vertically reciprocating member'.connected to the lever and adapted to receive the taller bar at the end of the upper guide and support the same while moving downward to the plane of the lower guide.
