Be it known that I, JAMES S. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in. the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake- Shoe Molds, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of brake shoes, and more particularly to the mold in which the shoe is cast, and its object is broadly to provide a permanent mold in which a brake shoe may be cast fully as well as it can be cast in a sand mold, and r with accompanying reductions in time and cost.
A further object of my invention is to provide a permanent mold which can be easily and quickly opened and closed'to-permit the operator to quickly insert the rein-y forcing part or parts which are to be embedded in the shoe casting, and to facilitate removal of the shoe.
A still further object of my invention is to arovide ametal mold of the character described, having means for protecting all or certain parts of the shoe from the chilling effect which would result by contact of the hot metal withthe metal walls of the mold cavity.

In .the drawing I have shown a metal mold comprising a drag member 10, two cope members 11 and 12 having a mold cavity 13 therein, and a relatively fixed frame 14. The drag member 10 is provided with outstanding side lugs 15 which are pivotally connected by means of a pivoting bar 16 to the relatively fixed frame 14. In a like manner, the cope member 11 is provided with outstanding side lugs 17 which are pivotally connected by the pivoting bar 16 to the relatively fixed frame. The cope member 12 has outstanding side lugs 18 which are pivotally connected by a pivoting bar 19 to 1923. Serial No. 652,779.
the frame. It will be readily understood that the drag member 10 and the cope members 11 and 12 may be swung into positions indicated by dotted lines in Fig.. 1. To hold the drag member 10 in its closed position, I have provided it with side lugs 2O which are adapted to engage the pivoting bar 19 and which may be secured thereto by means of locking pins 21. The two cope members are held in closed position by clamps 22, the clamps 22 being pivotally secured to the cope member 11 and having threaded posts 23 adapted to engage the cope member 12.
The relatively fixed frame 14. may be supported by any suitable means. In the drawing I have shown the frame 14 as comprising a plurality of integral legs 24 adapted to support the frame upon a table or the like, it being understood that the table or the like would be adapted to permit the drag member 10 to swing downward into its open position.
Each of the cope members 11 and 12 has a part of the mold cavity 13 formed therein, the partingline between the cope members extending longitudinally of the mold and substantially central of the mold cavity. This construction enables the mold to be quickly and easily opened and closed and it also enables the parts which are embedded in the shoe casting to beY arranged in the mold and held therein in proper positions. The cope members may be closed without in jury te and without disarranging the parts to be embedded in the shoe casting, and they may be opened for the removal of the shoe casting without damage to any parts of the mold.
I have designated by the reference characters 26 and 2'?, respectively, a steel attaching lug and the steel reinforcing back such as are usually embedded in the' shoe casting. The reference character 28 designates a sand core for forming the opening in the attaching lug. In will be noted that the sand core 28 serves to hold the steel attaching lug 26 and the steel reinforcing back 27 in an assembled condition; therefore, the several parts, the attaching lug 26, the reinforcing baclr 27 and the sand core 28 may be inserted in the mold cavity as a unit and a plurality of wire ties 29 maybe employed to hold them in proper positions in the mold cavity. In the preferred embodiment of my invention I provide a sand plug 30 which is recessed at 31 to receive the attaching lug 26 and the send core 28. The Wire ties 29 are suspended from a ber which rests upon aeonteiner or holder 33 in which the send plug 8O is made. 12. A permanent mold for making castings, comprising a frame having an opening therein, a cope, a dragpivotally mounted on the frame at one side of said opening to swing into operative position in said opening, and means for securing the drag in operative position.

A permanent mold for making eastings, Comprising a frame having an opening therein, a two-member cope, each of said cope members being pivotally mounted' on the frame and adapted to abut in operative position and to be supported and rest upon the frame in open position, a drag pivotally mounted on the frame and adapted to be swung up in said opening in abutting relation to the cope members, and means for holding said drag in abutting position.
