Be it known that I, DEAN Moon, citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester,
in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Apparatus for Hand or Breast Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus in the form of a feeding mechanism for hand or breast drills with which such a drill can be simultaneously rotated with one hand and fed into the stock to be drilled with the other hand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a socket or support for the handle of the hand or breast drill in which the drill is wholly supported and held in line in the direction in which the drill is to be fed.
Another object of this invention is to construct the feeding apparatus so that it can be mounted in a vise and held therein in any angular position for performing a drilling operation.
These and other objects of this invention will be fully illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.

Hand or breast drills depend for their feeding on the weight of the body or the pressure which the hand or chest can exert against the handle of such a drill. For work that is not hard to drill and for workmen who can hold the drill in line with the direction of the hole to be drilled this is not diflicult, but when the material to be drilled is hard or tough and but little progress can be made by forcing the drill against the stock or when absolute accuracy is required the hand or breast drill must be provided with a special apparatus that will permit the feeding of the drill uniformly and with a greater pressure than is possible. to produce with the body in order to do good work.
Such an apparatus forms the subject matter of my present invention and as illustrated in the figures comprises among other parts a hollow casing 1 which serves both for the housing of the apparatus and the socket in-which the handle of the hand or breast drill is held in place. The apparatus is preferably mounted in a vise 2 and for this purpose a bearing block 3 is provided on the apparatus. This bearing block is rectangular in outline and can be clamped in place between the two jaws of the vise 2. A spindle 4: is mounted to rotate in the bearing of the bearing block and projects 'to either side of the vise. At the left hand side of the vise the handle 5 is formed on the spindle by means of which the spindle is rotated. At the right hand side of the vise the spindle projects into the housing land has the feed screw 6 formed on the end thereof. In the housing are mounted a pair of wooden bearing blocks 7 and 8 between which the nut 9 is held in place. The feed screw 6 is threaded into the nut 9 so that on the rotation of the spindle the end of the feed screw is fed forward or back in the housing 1.
The wooden bearing blocks in front and back of the nut 9 are held in place between two washers 10 and 11 one in front of the block 8 and the other in back of the block 7. In addition to this a pair of pins 12 and 13 projectthrough the housing in front of the washer 11 and embrace the outer end of the feed screw the pins being riveted to the walls of the housing on the outside thereof in any suitable manner.
The two pins 12 and 13 hold the bearing blocks from sliding toward the front end of the housing while the bearing block 3 held between the jaws of the vise serves as the thrust bearing that prevents these parts from moving out of the rear of the housing when the feed screw is advanced. As will be seen from the figures of the drawing the bearing block 3 is slightly larger than the housing so that when the bearing block 3 is clamped between the jaws of the vise ofthe housing can slide between these jaws and be held from rotating with the feed screw, by this insertion of the housing between the aws of the vise.
One of the sides of the housing is hinged thereto and a clasp 14: is provided on the adjacent side to lock the hinged side to the housing. This is for the purpose of inserting the handle of the drill into the housing from one side and then clamping it in place therein by closing the hinged side. The socket thus formed grips the handle tightly as illustrated in Figure 1.
In this way the drill is held in a suitable chuck ready for use. The stock to be drilled may be held in any suitable manner as for instance in a vise, and the drill will be fed into it by rotating the spindle of the apparatus as above described.
I claim- 1. A feeding mechanism for hand or breast drills comprising a housing forming a socket for holding the handle of the hand or breast drill in one end of said housing, a pair of bearing blocks held in place in the other end of said housing, a nut held in place between said bearing blocks, a feed screw threaded into said nut and passing through said bearing blocks, a spindle forming an extension of said feed screw and projecting from said housing, a third bearing block for said spindle to rotate therein and a handle formed on the end of said spindle, said third bearing block being adapted to be rigidly clamped in place between the jaws of a vise and said housing being adapted to project'between the jaws of the vise and be held against rotation during the feeding of said feeding mechanism.
2. A feeding mechanism for hand or breast drills comprising a housing forming a socket for holding thehandle of the hand or breast drill in one end of said housing, a pair of bearing bloeksheld in place in the other end of said housing, a nut held in place between said bearing blocks, a feed screw threaded into said nut and passing through said bearing blocks, a spindle form ing an extension of said feed screw and projecting from said housing, a third bearing block for said spindle to rotate therein and a handle. formed on the end of said spindle, said third bearing block being adapted to be rigidly clamped in place between the jaws of a vise and said housing being adapted to project between the jaws of the vise and beheld against rotation during the feeding of said feeding mechanism, one side ofsaid housing being hinged thereto for the pur pose of inserting the handle of the breast or hand drill into the side of said housing, a clasp for locking the hinged side to said housing.
