KR. IHAMUOTILA- MULTIPHASE TRANSLATING DEVICE Filed Jan. 31 1921 Patented Feb. 19, 1924.
UNITED STATES K R. IHAMUOTILA, OF HELSINGFORS, FINLAND.
MULTIPHASE TRANSLATING DEVICE.
Application filed January 31, 1921.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, K RICHARD IHAM- UOTILA, a citizen of Finland, residing at Helsingfors, Finland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiphase Translating Devices (for which I have filed an application in Germany on January 8th, 1919), of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machinery and apparatus for generating or using a multiphase electrical current and has .ror its object to provide safety devices for such machines and apparatus.
My invention consists in locally arrangin the said safety devices at the star-point or the star connected system. According to the actual intensity of the current, the said safety devices are arranged either singly in combination with every winding or phase, or jointly in connection with the entire system of the windings or phase.
On the accompanying drawing an apparatus embodying my invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example.
At the zero point of the phases a, b, and 0, arranged in star connection, the safety devices d, e and f form a triangle or delta. Because of this delta connection, it will be apparent that the said safety devices are charged only with a portion of the current of the phase which portion amounts to the cubic-root of the total current. Therefore, the said safety devices may be diminished in size down to the cubic-root of the size heretofore used. Moreover, by the use of fuses, an absolute isochronism of partial currents in all phases of the machine or apparatus will be established, because, if one fuse has melted, the other two fuses, which had been charged with the cubic-root of the current, will melt immediately, as they now Serial No. 441,462.
receive the full current. Such absolute synchronism of partial current in all phases of the machine is particularly valuable. as it will prevent the machine, particularly a motor, from being burned out, which frequently occurs.
A further advantage of my invention consists in the possibility of safeguarding machines with strong current by fuses, instead of by switches, whereby part of a surplus of the current load is branched off.
The safety devices, the terminals of which are connected by a delta connection, as above stated, thus forming a complete system, are combined into a single plug having three contacts.
This feature alone considerably simplifies and cheapens the construction at the same time greatly adding to the safety of all multiphase current-machines.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a multi-phase translating device, the combination with a plurality of operating windings, of a plurality of safety devices connected in delta, said operating windings being connected in star through said delta connection of safety devices whereby the operation of any one of said safety devices causes the operation of one or more of the other safety devices.
2. The combination as specified in claim 1, in which the said safety devices are combined into a single plug, having a number of contacts corresponding to the number of safety devices.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
K. R. IHAMUOTILA.
Witnesses K. A. KosKINnN, O. TUOMINA.
