CLUTCH-PEDAL. LOCK roe mnaorons.
Application. filed-August s, 1921. Serial No. 490,446.
the county of Montgomery near the town of Centerville, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Clutch-Pedal Locksfor Tractors, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my inventiomis to provide for tractors, and more partlcularly those of the Fordson type, simple and efficient means for automatically holding the clutchin a released position after it has been shifted by'foot pressure.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following specification and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims. V
i In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational-view of a light tractor equipped with my new clutchpedal lock. Figure 2 is a side view of the clutch pedal shifting means before being moved by foot pressure to their overcenter or look- Figure 3 is a side view of said means in their over center position.
And Figure 4is atop plan view ofsaid means. Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference charactersdenote correspondingparts. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings.
for a detailed description of one form of embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a light tractor, and 2 the clutch pedal thereof. Bolted to the lower part of a foot bracket 3 secured to the tractor 1 below the clutch pedal 2, is the front end of a bar 4. The latter has a crank-shaped rear portion 5 that is attached by a bolt. 6 to the rear side portion of the tractor. (See Figures 1 and 4.)
Pivotally secured by a stud rivet 7 or other suitable fastening element to the middle portion of the bar 4, is an arm 8 to the lower end of which there is attached, by
stud rivet 9, an angle piece 10. The rivet 9 passes through an elongated vertical hole 11 provided in said angle piece to allow for slight play. (See Figure 2.)
Passing downwardly through a hole in the horizontal portion of the angle piece is the threaded lower end of a connecting rod 12. Applied to the threaded end of the latter, one on each side of the horizontal portion of the angle piece 10, are two nuts longitudinal adjustment of the: rod 12 through the angle piece 10, after which they are adapted to be turned to tightly grip the horizontal flange portion of. said angle piece 113, 13. ,The latter, when loosened, permit a for the, purpose of firmly securingthe rod thereto. (See Figuresl, 2 and At its upper end the rod 12 preferably terminates in a ball: portion; 14 that is received by a socket member 15 that projects downwardly from a cross bar 16. The latter is adapted tobe firmly secured by U bolts 17 to the horizontal foot-receiving part 18 of the clutch pedal 2. The ball and socket connection just described enables the rod 12 to be easily secured to foot pedals of different angles for a purpose now to be described. 1
When suflicient pressure'is exerted upon theclutch pedal v2 by the foot tofthrowxthe :latter to its clutch-releasing position, .the-
arm 8 will be thrown over center by the rod 12 to the position-shown in Figure 2. The movementv of the'a'rm 8 to this position is assisted by spring" 19: connected betweensaid armand the bar4, although the armmay be thrown over center without the employment of a spring or other means.
to assist it. ;After the clutchpeda1 2has Q been moved to; its clutch-releasing position, the movement of the arm 8 will'be'v stopped; by a stud rivet '20 secured to the A bar 4 in front of the rivet 7, Since the,
arm 8 is now over centerfit will hold the clutch in its released. position after thedrivers foot has beenremoved from the clutch pedal 2.
The arm 8 may pressure exerted directly upon it, but for the purpose of more conveniently returning it to its original position, there is pivoted to the bar 4 by a stud rivet 21, a foot lever 22. Secured to the lower end of the latter is a stud on which there is mounted a roller 24. Now when foot pressure is be forced back to itsoriginal position shown in Figure 2 by foot of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or modifications may be made therein within the scope of the subjoined claims I Having descrlbed my invention, I claim:
1. In a self-propelled yehicle of the type described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of an arm pivotally secured to said vehicle, an angle piece secured to the free end of said arm, a rod connected at its jup- 7 per end to the clutch pedal, a :lower threaded end on said rod pro e tmgf downwardly through thefhorizontal portion of said angle plece, and "two nuts on the threaded end of said rod, oneonc each side of the horizontal portion of-said angle p ece, for the purpose specified.
2. In a self-propelled vehicle of the type described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of an arm pivotally secured to said vehicle, a vertical rod connected at its lower end to said arm, a ballon the upper end of said rod, a horizontal member secured to -1said:;clutch pedal, and a socket piece projecting" downwardly from said horizontal member, to receive 'said iba ll end of the rod,
for the purpose specified.
' 3. In a self-propelled vehicle of the-type i described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of a horizontal bar secured to said yehicle, an arm p'ivotal'ly' securedto said bar,
means connected between said clutch pedal and said arm, whereby, when the clutch merit.
4:. In a self-propelled .vehiele of the type described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of a horizontal bar secured to said vehicle, an arm ,piyotally secured to said bar, means connected between said clutchv pedal and said arm, whereby, when the clutch pedal is depressed, said arm will be thrown -o.ver center to hold the clutch pedal down, and a spring connected between said arm andbar to assist in pulling said arm over center.
5. In a self-propelled vehicle of the type described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of a horizontal bar secured to 88:10. vehicle, an arm p votalfly secured-to said bar;
means connected between said clutch pedal and said arm, whereby, when the clutch 5 pedal is depressed, said arm will lie-thrown oyer center to hold itheiclutchrpedal down,
and a foot lever pivoted to said horizontal bar in a position to engage said arm to re turn it to its original position,
6. In a self propelled vehicleioi the type described, the combination with a clutch pedal, of a horizontal-bar securedat its front end to said Vehicle, a crank shaped rear end on said bar secured to said ye'hicle below the clutchpedal, an" arm piyotal ly secured to the middle portion'of'saidbar be low the clutch-pedal, an angle .piece secured 'to the tree end'ofsaid arm, a rod secured --at its lower end to said anglepiece, across bar to which :the upperxend of said rod is secured, and clamping means :for securing said cross bar to the clutch pedal.
In ,testiinonywvhereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of August,1921i EZRNE'ST R. MILLER.
