DNIEL YOUNG, 0F BRQOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO YOUNG NVNTIGNS, INC.,
A CORPORATION or NEW Yoran.. v
HOSIERY.
Application led August l23, 1922. Serial No. 583,892.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, DANIEL YOUNG, a subject of the `King of Great Britain, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings adapted for that style known as the half hose or stocking.
The objects of this invention are to provide a hose or stocking of this character which will conveniently and easily adjust itself to the. leg and which is comfortable to the wearer, and does not unnecessarily bind or pinch the leg; but has a light and clinging eect thereto, without the use of an additional support such as is in use at the present time. i
It will be seen I accomplish the foregoing.
vertical sectional view of the upper portion of my improved hose or stocking, and 1s shown as it vis manufactured; Fig. 2. is a vertical sectional view of the hose or stock` ing shown in Fig. l. with the top folded over, and ready to be applied to the leg of the wearer; Fig. 3. is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Fi 2.
Referring to the drawings which show a general embodiment of this invention and it eing' understood are more or less diagrammatic of a knitted hose, it will be seen there can be many changes in the general form of construction without departin spirit of my invention, and it will be understood that the principal point of this invention is to provide a hose or stocking having a top so formed that it will cling to any part of the leg whether it is located above or below the knee, and does not depend on any subsidiary member to. retain it in the position in which it is placed, and the top being vsoretained that it will securely support the rest of the stocking, and cause it tosnugly fit the leg of the wearer.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 it will be seen -I provide a hose or stocking 2 having a double top as shown at 3 and 4. The top 3 is different, from the top 4, inasmuch as it is commail nf more threads 1n its construction,
from the and thetension of the machine used in making the hose is so arranged to make a tighter or closer construction and this causes the material to be thicker and stronger in the top 3 than it is in the top 4. ln other words the top 3 when the stocking is made of a coarse material may have three or four threads passing into the machine and positioned into the top 3, and when the top 4 and the rest of the stocking is being made only two threads will be passing into the machine, and also the tension on the threads will be less, for the top 4, thus causing the v` diameter of the top 3 to be slightly less than the diameter of the top 4, so that when the to 3 is folded into the top 4 the two tops will be in parallel lanes with each other. It will be understoo that while I have given for example the combination of the di'erence between the two tops, as regards to threads, as three to two or four to two, I do no confine myself to this combination as the dierence of material both as regards to quality and gauge and also kind of material used, will necessitate a great variety of combination as regards to the number of threads to be used in each top relative to the other. The invention lies in the fact' that by using more threads in one top, which makes it stronger and less elastic than the other top, and also the restof the stocking, it will cling tighter to the leg, than the rest of the stocking which is more elastic, thus the movement of the muscles of the leg which causes the stocking to work down and become loose will not have that effect, owing to this new combination which readily allow's the weaker part of the stocking to give with the muscles of the leg, but the stronger top always pullving the weaker parts back into posit-ion on the leg. y
The operation or action of this stocking is very simple, the stocking is simply pulled on the leg and the to 3 binding or hugging the leg tightly and allbwing the weaker parts of the stocking to give or act with the muscles of the leg and thus the top 3 holds the rest of the stocking in itsproper place or position.
What I desire to claim is 1. An article of manufacture comprising a hose havin a body ortion and a cu' portion of a plurality o overlying fabric plies, the inner ply of said cuff ortion at a plurality of adJacent points tiiruout its length tion o being of greater thickness and strength than the other portion of said cu portion, thereby offering increased resistance to expansion in said inner ply, the inside diameter of said inner portion being less than the other porsaid cuff ortion.
2. A method o making a hose having a body portion and a cuff portion of a plurality of overlying plies which consists in con- 10 strueting the plies .of said cu portion and body portion each of a plurality of threads and introduced into the inner ply at a' greater tension that the other ply a plurality` of additional threads at a plurality of adjacent points thruout the area of said one mentioned ply. t
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State'of New York, this 21st day of August, A. D. 1922.
