Description
A. F. YVARD, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
MARBLE-SAWING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,839, dated May 6, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, A. F. VARD, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Sawing Stone; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3, is a side view of a portion of one of the horizontal and vertical rack bars by which the saws are raised and lowered.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for sawing stone, designed for sawing marble blocks in polygonal taper form, for monuments, fence posts, etc.
The invention consists in the peculiar means employed for raising and lowering the saw frames, whereby stone or marble blocks may be sawed as specified.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a platform or flooring on which a rectangular frame B, is placed, and C, represents a vertical frame placed at one side of the framing B, in which a saw frame or sash D, is suspended, said frame or sash D, being allowed to work freely back and forth therein. The frame C, is stationary, and the saw frame or sash D, is suspended within it by chains (a) the lower ends of which are attached to the lower ends of the front and back uprights of the frame or sash D, said chains passing over pulleys (b) (b) in the upper part of the frame C, both chains being attached to the inner end of a rack bar E, which is fitted in the under side of the top piece of the frame C. The outer end of the rack bar E, has a chain (c) attached to it, said chain passing over a pulley (d) at the end of the top piece of the frame C, and having a weight (e) secured to its' end.
F, is a bar, the upper end of which is attached by a pivot (f) to the top piece of the frame C. This bar has a rack G, attached to its inner side, which rack is allowed to slide up and down upon the bar. The rack Gr, gears into a pinion (g) which is secured in the top piece of the frame C, and this pinion also gears into the rack bar E, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. To the lower end of the bar F, there is attached one end Aof a pitman H, the opposite end of said pitman being attached to a crank (h) on a vertical shaft I, which is fitted in one end of the frame B.
J, is a connecting rod, one end of which is attached to the lower end of the rack G, and the opposite end to the lower end of the saw frame or sash D.
K, is a vertical frame which is constructed precisely the same as the frame C. The frame K, however is not attached to the frame B, but one end works on the shaft I, as a center. The oppositeA end of the frame K, has a vertical shaft L, fitted to it, said shaft having a pinion at each end, which pinions gear into racks M, M, attached to segment bars N, N, which are portions of circles of which the shaft I, is the center. On the center of the shaft L, there is placed a bevel wheel (j) in which a pinion (lo) on ashaft (l) gears. The frame K, has a saw frame or sash D, fitted within it, and said frame or sash has the same appurtenances attached to it, as the frame or sash D, and the same let-ters of reference are used.
It will be seen that the frame K, may be set at any angle with the frame C, by merely turning the shaft (Z) and a reciprocating motion will be given the two saw frames or sashes D, D, by turning the shaft I, as both pitmen H, are connected with the crank The marble block is placed underneath the saw frames or sashes, and two opposite sides of the block will be sawed at the same time, the taper of the block of course corresponding to the relative angular position of the frame K, with the frame C. The saws feed themselves to their work by their own gravity, the weights (e) (e) serving as counterpoises, and it will be seen that the frames or sashes will descend vertically, and also the connecting rods J, J, in consequence of the chains (a) (a) and rack bars E, Gr, connected by the pinion If desired the frame C, may be made adjustable the same as the frame K.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
Suspending the saW frames or sashes D, D, Within the frames C, K, by means of 5 the chains (a) (a) Which are attached to rack bars E, having Weights or counterposes (e) connected to them, the rack bar E, being connected by pnons (g) With rack
