F. HEINRICH CHICKEN BOOST Filed April 1e. 1922 Patented Feb. 12, 1924.,
FRED HEINRICH, on WHITTEMORE, Iowa.
CHICKEN ROOST.
Application led April 1S, 192,2. Serial No. 554,488.
To all who/m, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Finn)y HEINRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whittemore, in the county of Kossuth and State of lowa, have invented certain new` and useful improvements in Chicken Boosts, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to new and improved chicken roost includingnovel means to maintain sanitation and insure proper disinfecting of the roost at all times.
The main object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which includes a reservoir for the disinfecting fluid, means to properly feed the disinfecting fluid to the upper side ofthe roost and a novel arrangement of opening whereby the reservoir may be replenished from time to time as the occasion may require.
Various other objects of my invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan showing my invention in its preferred embodiment, the support being shown in horizontal cross section.
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal cross section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view in transverse cross section taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
1n describing my invention in detail, 10 designates the body of the roost which, in the present embodiment is somewhat elongated in form and preferably constructed of wood or other suitable material. A metallic bracket 11 is provided which is fastened to one end and the bottom of the roost by any fastening member 12 and which is designed to support the roost in a horizontal position as is obvious.
The upper side of the roost proper is cut away at 14 to receive spaced inserts 15 which inserts are also preferably constructed of wood or a similar material. Beneath the cut away portion 14 and spaced from the ends thereof the body portion 10 is further cut away to provide a reservoir 16 as clearly shown in Figure 2. ln View of the fact that the reservoir terminates shortof the ends of the cut away portion 111 it will be noted that the ends of the inserts 15 will be substantially supported upon the shoulders formed between the ends of the reservoir and the ends of the cut away portion 14.
A wick or feeding member 17 is arranged between the inserts 15 and depends beneath the inserts so as to extend within the reservoir 16. rl`he depending portion of the wick or feeding yportion 17 is immersed in the disinfecting fluid that is carried within the reservoirv16 and .it will be thereby noted that such disinfecting fluid will be automatically drawn or fed upwardly.
While the insert 15 and the wick 17 are shown maintained in a secure position by means of fastening members 1S it is to be understood that the insert and the wick are removable for purposes of cleaning or substitution or repair and that any other suitable fastening means may be substituted for the means shown in the present instance at 18.
Near one end the inner faces of the insert 15 are provided with cut away portions 19 which when arranged opposite each other as shown in Figure 1 provide an opening communicating with the reservoir 16 so that the disinfecting fluid can be poured into the reservoir. I also deem it expedient to provide the body 10 with an opening 20 adjacent one end of cut away portion 14 and also a second opening 21 to establish communication between the opening 2O and the reservoir 16. A disinfecting fluid may be poured into the opening 20 and will find its way into reservoir as is obvious.
It will be noted that a disinfecting fluid will be fed by the wick or feeding member 17 to the upper face of the roost and in such manner as to maintain the roost in a thoroughly sanitary condition and also tend to disinfect the fowl who use the roost.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and that further detailed description is unnecessary.
.What is claimed is:
1. A chicken roost of the character described, comprising a body portion provided with a cut out portion open to its upper face and a reservoir open to said cut out portion and terminating short of the ends thereof, spaced inserts arranged in said cut out portion, a wick arranged in said inserts and extending into said reservoir, said inserts provided with an opening communcating with said reservoir, and said body portion being provided with an opening spaced from said cut out portion having communication with said reservoir, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising an elongated body portion having a cut out portion opened to its upper face, said body portion beingv further ont away below said cut out portion to provide a reservoir, spaced inserts positioned in said cut out portion a wick arranged between said inserts and depending into said reservoir, the inner faces of said spaced inserts being cut away adjacent one end to provide openings through which Huid may be poured into said reservoir, said body portion being further provided with an opening in communication with said reservoir, and means to snpport said body portion substantially as described. c
3. A chicken roost having a longitudinal ont out portion open to its upper face and a reservoir beneath said cut out portion terminatingshort of the ends thereof, removable inserts positioned in said cut out portion and being provided with closed out outs forming an opening for communication with said reservoir, a wick positioned between said inserts and depending into said reservoir, and said roost being provided with an opening having one end open to said reservoir and the other end open to its upper face, spaced` :trom said first named cut out portion, substantially as described.
, In testimony whereof-I aiiix my signature.
FRED HEINRICH.
