C. M. HANNAFORD ANGLE COCK HOLDER AND TRAIN PIPE CLAMP Filed March 27. 1922 Patented Feb. 5, 192%.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oLEoN M. HANNAFORD, or RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
- ANGLE-COCK HOLDER AND TRAIN-PIPE CLAMP. i 1
. Application filed March 27, 1922. Serial No. 546,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLEON, M. HANNAroRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented. a certain new and useful Improvement in Angle-Cock Holders and Train-Pipe Clamps, ofwhich the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a device conforming to M. C. B. or A. R. A. standards, for holding angle-cocks and clamping train-pipes of railway cars.
The invention consists of a holder divided longitudinally into two parts and adapted to engage the train-pipe and the angular (polygonal) end of the angle-cock, and to support the train-pipe, and to hold the angle-cock rigidly in adjusted position, the parts of the holder being movable toward each other to engage the train-pipe and angle-cock and then fixed in position by U bolts anchored in a right-angled bracket which is fixed to the end sill or other end portion of the car. In order to compensate for variations in the length of train-pipe ends, the holder elements may be capable of adjustment with relation to the bracket. In any case, the assembling and disassembling of the parts are readily performed by merely removlng the U bolts.
The invention is susceptible of variation in construction and arrangement and there are here shown two such variations merely as illustrations, one of them having the holder of such length as to be engaged by both of the U bolts, and the other of such length as to be engaged by only one of them. Of course, these permissible variations include differences in rolling stock and changes in standards of equipment.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the two-part holder with the parts slightly separated. Fig. 2 is a front end view. Fig. 3 is a side assembly elevation, with the holder flange and the bracket broken out to expose the bolt openings in these parts. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3, with the fore part in section on the line IVIV. Fig. 5 is a section on the line V-V, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another form of the invention.
train-pipe end. Y
Fig. 2 illustrates the front end of both of these constructions.
The. angle-cock holder is made in two parts -1 and 2, alike excepting that one is right-hand and the other lefthand. Each of these parts 1 and 2 is provided with a bottom portion 3 corresponding in curvature with the train pipe to be engaged and the wall 4 which rises substantially vertical so that such walls in opposite parts will be parallel, and these bottom portions and walls form a trough to receive and engage the train pipe. The walls terminate in laterally extended horizontal flanges 5, which are provided with longitudinally extending At the front the parts 3 and at are extended to form the halves of a polygonal pocket 7 adapted to receive and engage the correspondingly shaped end or hex 8 of the usual angle-cock and to hold the angle-cock against accidental movement in all directions.
9 is an L-shaped or right-angled bracket, preferably made by bending a piece of plate metal, and having a vertical member and a horizontal member, the vertical member being adapted to be riveted to the end sill 10 or other end portion of a car, by means of any desired number of rivets 11. The horizontal portion of the bracket is provided with circular holes 12, which are adapted to register with the slots 6 in the flanges of the holder. When theholder parts 1 and 2 are placed alongside a train-pipe 13 with their flanges underneath the horizontal portion of the bracket 9 and the holes 6 and 12 registering, then U-bolts M are passed up 1 from beneath the holder through these holes and secured by means of the nuts 15 which may be secured by lock-nuts 16 or other means; The provision of the slots 6 permits of the longitudinal adjustmentof the holder to properly place it with. relation to the As will be v seen, two used in the illustration of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and both of these U-bolts engage the holder. Inasmuch as the U-bolts are fashioned to engage a holder that closely hugs the train-pipe when it is assembled thereon, it will be seen that when these U-bolts are drawn up into place, they will hold the holder parts in given position as ,well as serve to clamp the train-pipe in position.
U-bolts 14: are,
The holder members cannot escape longitudinally from the Ubolts, because the latter pass through the slots 6 in the flanges of the holder members.
A modification of the holder just de scribed is shown in Fig. 6, the main differences between the two being that the holder in Fig. 6 is shorter by approximately half than the holder shown in the other views of the drawing, and these holder members are provided with rear end beads or flanges 17 which serve as a reinforce, and only one of the U-bolts engages the holder, while the other is in direct contact with the train pipe 13, but otherwise the holder in Fig. 6 in its construction, mode of application and operation is the same as that previously described and the parts are correspondingly designated.
In both cases the angle-cock holder and the train-pipe are securely and adequately held, and the extension of the train-pipe as required by M. O. B. or A. R. A. standards is anticipated and provided for.
It will be noticed further that the depth of the cavity in the holder formed by the parts 3 and 4tis such as to receive the train-pipe wholly within the horizontal level of the flanges 5, and that the horizontal portion of the bracket 9 rests on these flanges and therefore contacts with the upper portion of the train-pipe and so insures the desired rigidity of the structure or assembly of parts.
What I claim is 1. An angle-cock holder, made in two longitudinally separable parts and having a pocket formation to receive and engage the hex of the angle-cock and a trough to receive and engage the train pipe and provided with laterally extended horizontal flanges, and a supporting bracket therefor, said bracket adapted to be carried by a car and having a horizontal portion to engage the top of a train pipe and the holder flanges and to serve as a direct support for holding the angle-cock and train pipe rigidly and thereby prevent the angle-cock from moving forward, backward, and laterally, and hold the same in proper position.
2. An angle-cock holder, made in two longitudinally separable similar parts to engage the hex on the angle-cock and the contiguous parts of the train pipe, the line of division being parallel with the train-pipe,
each of said two parts provided with a flanged portion at the top extending out laterally from the train-pipe and on a line with the top thereof and provided with longitudinal slots, combined with a support depending from the car and having a horizontal portion overlying and in contact with the train pipe and provided with bolt-holes with which the slots in the flanged portions may be alined, and U-bolts applied to the holder and train-pipe and having their ends extending through the slots and bolt-holes, said slots permitting the adjustment of the holder members to the support to insure alinement.
3. An angle-cock holder, made in two longitudinally separable similar parts to engage the hex on the angle-cock and the contiguous parts of the train pipe, the line of division being parallel with the train-pipe, each of said two parts provided with a flanged portion at the top extending out laterally from the train-pipe and on a line with the top thereof and provided with bolt holes, combined with an L-shaped bracket adapted to be applied to the end of a car and having its horizontal portion in contact with the upper portion of the train pipe and provided with bolt holes, and U-bolts applied to the holder and trainpipe and engaged with the bracket.
4. An angle-cock holder, made in two longitudinally separable similiar parts to engage the train pipe, the line of division being parallel with the train-pipe, each part pro-' vided with a flanged portion at the top extending out laterally from the train-pipe and on a line with the top of the train-pipe and provided with bolt holes, the parts having a polygonal pocket to receive, engage and hold the angle-cock, an L-shaped bracket adapted to be applied to the end of a car and having its horizontal portion overlying the train-pipe in the line of the holder, and U-bolts for connecting the holder parts with one another about the train-pipe and with the bracket and also binding the train-pipe and bracket together.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 24; day of March, A. D.
CLEON M. HANNAFORD. Witnesses:
