*THOMAS o. BATES, OE LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND.
IIIACIIINEEY` EOE MAKING wAEER EIsoUITscUP WATERS, Ann SIMILAE ARTICLES EEOM LIQUID.
A'liplmation filed `August 24, 1921; serial No. 494,778;
To all whomz't may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS GWEN- BATES, a subject of the King of England, and residinof at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, ngland, have invented Improvements in Machinery for Making Wafer Biscuits, Cup Wafers, and Similar Articles from Liquid, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to machinery for making wafer biscuits, cup wafers, and similar articles, and it relates more particularly to that type in which a plurality of cooking plates are connected in series, and are passed through an oven with the biscuit material enclosed within them, and then brought out of the oven after cooking, and opened, and re-Oharged with batter or like material, and closed, and the operation repeated; in which type of apparatus, in some cases, the plates are run on tracks one below the other in entering, and returning from the Oven, which may be heated by gases or other heating medium.
In a machine according to this invention, between the adjacent edges of each set of plates, there is introduced a shield or separating medium, ywhich prevents the steam generated from the batter or material introduced into a hot plate, after charging, issuing from same between the upper and lower plates, just prior to closing, from blowing batter therefrom into the open succeeding plate on reaching it; and this partition or shield, the sides of which the adjacent ends of the two plates may practically touch, may be of an inverted U- type-*say of metal-carried by brackets or arms on the inside of the plate connecting links or devices. These arms or brackets extend inwards horizontally or substantially so, so as to be in line with, or in the same plane as the axles of the plates in order to clear the lower track rails of the machine, as they move along the track and turn round at the ends, and the inward ends of the arms or brackets project upwards into the shields, and are connected by pins say to same; lmovement longitudinally being allowed so as to compensate for expansion and contraction.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view of the machine showing a partition or shield; Figure 2 is a cross section of the shield; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the machine; and Figure 4 a plan.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 are the upper and lower plates of the machine, the upper one of which is hinged at 3, and these plates are each mounted on to cross shafts 4 fixed to the lower plate, and having wheels 5 on their ends which run on tracks 6, on the inside of the main frames 7 of the machine; the axles of the successive plates being connected together by coupling links 8 which form couplings between the plates.
The machine thus far described in connection with the drawings is of known construction.
The shield or partition is marked 10, and
it is carried by brackets 11 fixed on the inner sides of the coupling links 8, and the form of the partition or shield is an inverted narrow trough of sheet metal, as seen in Figure 2, and the heads of the brackets ll lie within the ends of the shield, and the shield is secured to the brackets by rivets or the like, longitudinal movement being allowed by giving freedom of play in the connections, so as to allow for expansion and contraction. In the machines of the kind referred to, as heretofore made, comprising a number of plates successively charged with matter or fluid after the cooked articles have been removed, the plates being hot (and being heated by gas or other means in the known way), the batter begins to boil before the upper cover 1 comes down and is closed, and the steam issues in a thin stream from the rear edge of the newly charged plate, (as well as other edges), and this stream of steam is horizontally projected on to the leading open edges of the next plates being charged with batter, and this batter isblown about by the steam, and often a large proportion lost; but by the present invention, the batter being so introduced is not interfered with and cannot be blown away, being prevented by the shield or partition I0 between the plates.
What is claimed is 1. In a wafer biscuit making machine, a movable series of plates, and a bafie interposed between adjacent plates to prevent a fresh charge introduced in one set of plates from being interfered with by steam generated from the charge oi the preceding plate, said baille projecting above the material receiving plane of the plates and being Wholly free of connection with any of the plates.
2. In a Wafer biscuit making machine having a movable series of plates, an i11- verted U-shaped metallic member interposed between adjacent plates of the series lo to prevent a fresh charge introduced in one set of plates from being interfered lwith naine to thisspeciication in the presence 15 of two subscribing Witnesses.
