To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. OSLUND,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Stringing-Up Device for Wiredrawing Drums, of which the following is a specification.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a wire drawing block with means whereby the Wire can be connected to U the block and wound `thereon by hand as many times as desiredy to draw it through the die before the block is positively connected with the power.
Further objects andk advantages. of the invention will appear hereinafter.

I have shown the invention as applied to a machine capable of drawing steel wire through three or more dies continuously.
When the wire is brought through the die to the first drum it, of course, starts in a slack condition. It has to be flattened to pass through the die and then has to be drawn through the die'to produce an end long enough to fasten it to the drum. This is usuallyfdone by a` tongs and chain device havinga reciprocating or oscillating motion. This invention constitutes a substitution for the mechanism for producing that motion, the tongs and chain being used as before. I have departed from the methods known to me and I provide a posi,-
tive means of drivingthevdrum at alltiines but arrange it so that the power operated means is readily` `disconnected from .the drum. However, whenr disconnected the drum can be operated positively by hand.
It isso arranged that in drawing through they drum is operated by'hand positively.
The drum itself'is used for the drawing through or Stringing up operation. The wire is connected with the drum in the same way as it is usually connected with the oscillating device and in this way the operator can start the drum by hand as slowly as may be desired and avoidl the troubles that have been encountered in the previous devices. Vhen he gets enough wire drawn through the die he withdraws the hand operating device, or disconnects it, and the drumis operated by power positively at a normal constant speed. The invention can be applied toall the drums of the wire drawing bench although I have shown only one.
I have illustrated the invention as applied to a drawing-through drum 10 mounted to rotate on the bench 9. This drum has a Hat' bottom provided with a central hub 11 which is vertical. ordinarily. Up through this hub extends a vertical positive driving shaft 12 projecting up from below from the gearing by which `it is driven. This is arranged to support the drum which is centered on the hub. The top of this shaft 12 is squared ofi' l at 13 or otherwise formed of a non-circular shape. Fitting this part 13 so as to run with it positively is a hub 14 having an eX- ternal rack 15 preferably in the form of ratchet teeth. This rack, therefore, rotates y.
positively with the shaft 12 at all times although the drum 10 is capable of rotating independently of the shaft, that is, it is free thereon. The circular rack or gear 15 is fixed on the end of the shaft also, if desired,
by a screw 16.
Extending up from the bottom of the drum 10 near the circumference is a boss 18 through which passes a vertical shaft 19 having keyed to it a handle 20 for oscillating it on its bearing in the kboss 18. This handle has an integral arm 21 so as to constitute a bell crank. On this arm is an integral stud y 22 which extends upwardly into an elongated slot23 in a bell crank or double lever 24s. This is mounted on a stud 25 and has a pawl 26.0n vthe other end adapted to engage in the teeth of the rack 15. There is also a spring 27 which c onnectsthe inside of the drum with the handle 20and holds it in either of its extreme positions as shown fully in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It, of course, permits it to be moved by operation of the' han- .dle to the other position. As the shaftn19 is mounted on the drum and as the rack 15 is positively driven by the driving shaft 12, the drum will be positively driven through these parts connected by the pawl 26 when the parts are in the full line position shown in Fig. 1.
On the bottom of the drum is a bevel gear 30. With this is adapted to mesh a bevel pinion 32 on a shaft 33. Fixed on the end of this shaft is a crank handle 35 and the shaft has a bearing 34C on the bench. This bevel gear 32 when turned by the crank 35 will rotate the drum positively. When it is not desired to have the handle 35 rotated by the drum theV whole device consisting of the parts 32, 33 and 35 may be drawn out because the largest part of the pinion 32 is l, smaller than the bearing 34; They can be taken entirely out or left part way out so as1to bring the pinion 32k out of mesh with the gear 30.v
The operation is as followsf-The short end of the wire W passing through the die D is connected to the drum in any desired way, as for example, by connecting it to a pair of tongs having a hook passing through a hole through the side of the drum. The handle 20 is turned to the dotted line position before the wire is connected so that the drum cannot be driven by the constantly rotating drive shaft 12. As soon as the wire is connected the `Stringing up device consisting ofthe elements 32, 33 and 35 is put in place as shown in the drawings. The
handle 35 is rotated forwardly to turn the drum 10 and draw the wire through the die.
When enough wire is drawnthrough the die to enable it to be attached to vthe drum the tongs and chain are disconnected, preferably, and the end of the wire connected to the drum in any of the usual ways. Then the handle 2O is swung over to the full line position in Fig. 1. Then, this handle 35 with its connected parts is withdrawn and laid to one sider and the shaft 12 started. Then thev drum will continue to rotate and draw the wire positively in the usual way. I do not yclaim herein anything shown and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 477,814, filed June 15, 1921.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims. kTherefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described but what I do claim is zn 1.` In a Stringing up device for a wire drawing machine, the combination with a driving shaft and a drum, of means within the drum for rotating the drum positively from the shaft, said means being movable to inoperative position, and a hand operated device outside the drum and at the side `adapted to be moved into said bearing from the end thereof and having on one end means for rotating the drum positively and on the other end means for operating it by hand.. 3. The combination with a wire drawing drum, of a driving shaft concentric therewith but relatively rotatable, a wheel r lined withrespect to said shaft, a shaft mounted on said drum, a lever pivioted on the' last named shaft, and means operated by the lever for connecting the drum with the wheel to rotate from, the lever being capable of being turned to two positions for connecting the drum or disconnecting it from the driving shaft.

The combination with aiwire drawingy drum, of a driving shaft, said shaft and drum being concentric therewith but relatively rotatable, a ratchet wheel fixed 'with respect to said shaft, a vshaft paralled with the driving y a lever pivoted on the lastnamed shaft, one arm of said lever having a stud thereon, a pawl for engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel having an armprovided with a slot in which said stud is located, whereby the lever can be turned to two positions for moving the pawl either into or out ofengagement with the ratchet wheel and when in engagement the drum will be positively the drum ypositively thereshaft mounted on said Adrum,
driven by the driving shaft through the4 ratchet wheel, pawl, arm, lever and shaft.
5. The combination with a wire drawing drum, of a driving shaft, said shaft and drum being concentric but relatively rotatable, a ratchet wheel fixed with respect to lever yieldingly in each of its extreme positions,.in one of whichy the pawl is in engagement with the ratchet wheel, and in the other of which it is free from it.
