ENDLESS-Enron CARRIER AND FEED MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WpLasmm, a citizen of the United States, residin in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate 6 of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Endless-Ribbon Carriers and Feed Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to endless ink-ribbons and carriers and feed mechanisms therefor for adapting them for use with accounting machines, typewriters, and the like.
A particular object of the invention isto 16 provide an endless-ribbon carrier and feed mechanism adapted for use with the accounting machines fully described and illustrated in my copending applications, Serial No. 158,142, filed March 28th, 1917 and No.
" 231,825, filed May 1st, 1918, and for other machines in which the platen reciprocates toward and from the type.
Another object of the invention is to provide an efiicient, durable, easily operated and easily constructed mechanism of the above named type.
Other objects of the invention-will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein minute details of the invention are described, the invention is not'limited to these, since many and various changes may" be made without departing fromthe scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, showing by way of example one of many possible embodiments of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a plan showing apaper' carriage such as may be used on my said machines and having the new endless ribbon carrier and feed mechanism appliedthere toirig. 2 is and Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the carrier and feed mechanism.
As shown in said applications, my said machines are provided with an accounting machine base, an accounting machine thereon having settable type sectors, a paper carriag'e with platens thereon reciprocatory, on a carriage supporting frame, toward and a front elevation of the same;
from the type of the sectors, and means for carrying and feeding an ink ribbon between the type and the paper carried on the platen, whereby on reciprocation of the platen, the paper is pressed by the platen against the ribbon,thereby pressing the ribbon against thetype and bringing about printing of the typp characters upon the paper. erein there' is shown the carriage supporting frame 5 (at the left of Fig. 2), and the paper carriage 6 reciprocatory thereon and provided with a platen 7 and a horizontal frame piece 8 on the front of the carriage parallel to and lower than the platen. The paper carriage frame and the carriage supporting frame are not described herein since theyare fully shown and described in Sflld applications. Here it need bestated only. that thecarriageframe reciprocates toward the type 10' of the type sectors or carriersll on the accounting machine (not shown) and in front of the platen, whereby the platen presses the paper thereon against the type and accomplishes the printing, as fully explained in said applications. ow will be described the ribbon carrier mechanism. A drive bearing bracket 12 (Fig. 3 is mounted at one end of said frame piece and comprises a body portion 13 secured to the rear face of the frame piece :8 and'formed with a rearwardly turned centrally perforated lower bearing member 14 at the-lowerpart of the outer end. of the .body portion, and anupwardly and rearwardly turned elongated upper bearing member 16. having a longitudinal bearing slot 17 (at the left of Fig. 1) approximately parallel tothe platen. The body portion is also provided with an upwardly and forwardly'turned idler -bracket.18 on its inner end, and a rearwardly disposed hook member 19 atanintermediate part of the up- .rearwardly turned-idler bracket 23 at the upper part of its inner end,.a rearwardly turned perforated anchor member 24 at its outer end, a rearwardly turned centrally perforated lower bearing member 26 at the lower edge near its outer end portion, and an upper bearing member 27 at the upper edge of the body portion. A tension shaft 30 passes through said bearing members 26 and 27; and upper and lower spacing collars 28 and 29 are secured on said shaft just above said upper and lower bearing members. A forwardly pointing supporting arm 31 is fixed on the upper collar 28 and said shaft 30 and carries a rotary tension roller 33. A forwardly pointing tension arm 34 is fixed on the intermediate part of said shaft and said lower collar 29, and is provided with a hooked end, between which and said anchor member 24 alspring 35 is tensioned'.
Vertical idler shafts 37 are mounted on said idler brackets 18 and 23 and'carry idlers 38. A guide roll 'r 40 is rotatably supported on the inner end of said elongated bearing member 16; and an endless ink-ribbon 41 is dis osed around said rollers 33 and 40'respective y, holding said spring 35 under tension, having its mid-parts 42 disposed face-to-face against each other and in front of said idlers 38.
'A vertical shaft 45 is rotatable in said elongated opening 17 i and the perforation of said lowerbearing IIlI'Il'lbGI' 14 of the drive bracket; and a friction roller 46 on the upper part of said drive shaft is held pressed against the ribbon by a tension spring 47 having one end secured to said hook member 19 and the other end disposed around the mid-part ofthe drive shaft 45,thereby pressing the friction roller into driving engagement with theribbon wound around the guide roller 40.
3A ratchet 50 is fixed on the lower end of said drive shaft and isengaged by a tooth 51 of 'a' pawl .52 pivotally mounted on a pawl bracket 53 (at the left of Fig. 2) on the supporting frame 5 whereby the ratchet and ribbon are moved an. increment each time the carriage is reciprocated away from the type.
A plurality of upwardly and forwardly inclined standards 55 and 56 (Figs. 2 and 3) are mounted on the rear face ofsaid frame piece 8 and are formed with vertical upper end portions 57 at the printing level of said type and platen. On these vertical portions there is mounted a trough-shaped guide plate 58 arranged longitudinally in front of the printing portion of the platen. The side portions 60 of said plate are provided with registering elongated printing slots 61 through which the type engage the ribbon and press the ribbon against the paper as the carriage moves forwardly to the type. Thus the guide plate serves to hold the ribbon free from the paper except when pressed thereon by the type.
The peripheries of the tension and guide rollers 33 and 40 areconvexed or bellied as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the object of this being to cause the automatic guiding of the ribbon to the middle of said peripheries, thus to avoid the disadvantage of using guide flangs on these rollers.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a paper support, a roller; a guide roller; said rollers being adapted for carryin a ribbon in front of the support; a looseIy mounted drive shaft laterally movable relative to the guide roller; a friction deviceon the shaft; and a yieldable means engaging the drive shaft for pressing the friction device against the ribbon on the guide roller.
2. In combination, a carriage; a tension roller; a bracket; a guide roller mounted on said bracket; said rollers being adapted to carry a rib-bon disposed in front of the carriage; a drive shaft loosely mounted in said bracket; a friction roller on the shaft; and a spring engaging the drive shaft for pressing the friction roller against the ribbon on the guide roller.
3; In combination, a bracket comprising a perforated lower bearing member, an upper bearing member having a longitudinal bearing slot, and a hook member; a guide roller mounted on said upper bearing member; a vertical drive shaft in said elongated opening and the perforation of said lower bearing member; a friction roller on the upper part of the drive shaft; and a tension spring having one end secured to said hook member and the other end disposed around the mid-part of the drive shaft for pressing the friction roller against a ribbon wound around the guide roller.
4. In combination, a carriage; a guide roller at one end of the carriage; a bracket 'at the other end of the carriage and comprising an anchor at its outer end, and an upper and'a lower bearing member; a shaft passing through said members; supporting arm" on the shaft; an arm on the shaft; a spring tensioned between said arm and anchor; a tension roller on the arm; and means causing the rotation of one of the rollers.
5. In combination, a carriage comprisin a platen and a horizontal frame iece on the front of the carriage paralle to the platen; type carriers to which the platen reciprocates; rollers mounted on opposite ends of the frame piece and adapted to carry an endless ink-ribbon tensioned thereon and disposed between said carriage and the type carriers; and means for feeding the ribbon as the carriage reciprocates.
6. In combination, a carriage; type carriers in front of the carriage; rollers at opposite ends of the carriage for carrying an endless ink-ribbon having its mid-parts disposed face to face against each other; and an idler at each end of the carriage between the carriage and adjacent roller for guiding the ribbon between the carriage and earners.
7. A platen, a type ribbon extending across the platen, a plurality of type adapted to cooperate with the platen at grouped intervals, and a ribbon guide comprising two plates, one positioned between the ribbon and the platen, the other between the ribbon and the type, each having a similar series of printing slots corresponding to the intervals of the typing groups.

and a flanged idler intermediately located on the carriage for guiding the ribbon in front of said carriage.
