This invention. relates to pumps, and, more particularly, to a pump intended prL- marily for application to motor vehicles for use in ,infiating'tiresc,
An object of the invention is to provide a pump whichis simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, readily applicable to a vehicle, and highly efficient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump construction which will take up but a small amount of space and, hence, may be readily placed in position within the hood and adjacent the motor of practically all makes of vehicles.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and efficient arrangement for connecting the pump to the motor and which may be actuated to throw the pump into operation without stopping the motor.
The above and other objects of a similar character will become more clear from the following description of the embodiment of the invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a motor showing the pump applied in position.

Referring to the drawings more in detail, 10 indicates a bracket which supports a cylinder 11 having heads 12, 13, and enclosing a piston 14 provided with a hollow rod 15. The rod 15 extends through an opening in the cylinder head 13 and receives the end of a rotatable shaft 16 having a bearing 17 in a depending ear 18 of the bracket. The shaft 16 is formed with reversely arranged helical grooves 19 terminating at each end in common curved paths 19, as indicated in Fig. 3. The piston rod 15 may be formed with a key 20 extending through a channel in the cylinder head adjacent the opening through which the rod extends in order to prevent its rotation with the shaft 19; and in order to effect reciprocatory movement of the piston land ,rod, a follower 21 .is secured to and extends-through V the rod into the helical grooves. On the opposite side of the ear 18 the shaft may have thereon a stop collar.22 to hold it against longitudinal movement, and isprovided with means, such as the worm 23 slidably mounted upon the shaft, for clutchingthe shaft toa rotatingpart of a motor.
In order to throw the gear 23 into and out of operative engagement with the motor, a slide bar'2 1, having a longitudinally extending slot 25, is mounted upon the bracket 10 and is held in position by a boss 26 upon the bracket extending through the slot 25. A locking plate 27 is secured to the boss by means of a screw 28, and has its ends extending over the slide bar to prevent upward movement of the same. One end of the slide bar is formed with a depending arm 29 having a fork 3O surrounding the hub of the worm 23. and the other end has an upwardly extending handle 31 by means of which the slide bar may be operated. A spring catch 32. secured to the slide bar adjacent the handle, is adapted to engage in spaced oppositely inclined grooves 33 formed in the bracket to hold the bar in either of its two extreme positions. When the slide bar is moved toward the left, from the position shown in Fig. 3. the depending portion of the spring clip will be flexed in the direction of the end of the slide bar, as it engages the end of the groove, and when it reaches the groove further to the left will spring downwardly into the same to hold the slide bar in position. Obviously when this movement takes place the worm 23 will be moved with the slide bar from its position shown in Fig. 3.
The invention also contemplates the provision of means for preventing the inflation of a tire to too high a pressure, and to accomplish this object, in the head 12 is located a relief valve 35 which will remain closed until a certain predetermined pressure, to which the valve is adjusted, is reached, whereupon the valve will open and further actuation of the pump will result merely in assage of the air through the exhaust valve instead of through the delivery nozzle. The delivery nozzle 36 is shown as located upon the same fitting with the exhaust valve. An inlet valve 38 may also be located in the head 12 of the cylinder.

is supported by means of bars 39 secured to each end of the cylinder, as by bolts 40, and to the motor, as indicated in Fig. 1. The pump should, preferably, be positioned in the front of the motor so that the worm 23 may be thrown into engagement with aspiral gear 41 formed, preferably, integral with the driving pulley 42 for the fan belt which is generally located upon the crank shaft 43.
Obviously, the invention is not limited to the specific construction described, since the disclosure and description ismerely illustrative and in no sense restrictive of the invention. Such modifications may be made without departing from the invention, as.

I claim:
A tire pump comprising a bracket, a cylinder mounted on said bracket, a piston in said cylinder, ahollow rod secured to the piston, a rotatable shaft having a bearing in said bracket and projecting into said rod, said shaft having reversely arranged helical grooves thereon terminating in common curved paths, a follower secured to the rod and projecting into said grooves, a worm gear slidably secured to said shaft, a crank shaft positioned at substantially right angles to said rotatable shaft, a member longitudinally slidable on said bracket for throwing said worm gear into and out of engagement with said spiral gear, and a spring catch for holding said member in selected position.
