""rEN'r OFEIo DENNIS N. WEBSTER, OF GENEVA, onro.
[IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,268, dated March 3, 1874; application filed January 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS N. WEBSTER, of Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window-Sashes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a windowsash embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, and Fig. 3 a side view, of same, with one of.the sections of the top part or piece of sash removed; and Fig. 4 is a view of the removed section of the sash, viewing it from its inner side.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters. 7
This invention relates to a certain improvement in that class of window-sashes in which the glass is retained in the sash by means of grooves to avoid the use of putty or other plastic material, and by reason of which, in order to insert and remove the glass, the latter has to be put in and taken out edgewise, for which purpose the top or bottom part of the sash is made into two sections, dividing the said part or parts vertically and longitudinally. The object of my invent-ion is to facilitate or expedite the adjustment of the removable section or sections of the said part or parts of the sash in removing and replacing the same; and it consists in providing such section or sections with a spring-bolt, and a recess or aperture to receive a projection in the sash-frame, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A A refer to the sash, which is grooved, as shown in the drawing, to receive the glass, to avoid the use of putt-y or other plastic material in securing the latter in place. The upper or top part of the sash A Ais made in two sections, A A dividing the said part vertically and longitudinally, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4. The removable section A is beveled at its ends inwardly, while the parts of the sash against which they abut are beveled outwardly, by which the said section is prevented from moving laterally or leaving its place. It is also beveled at its ends downwardly, while the abutting portions of the sash are beveled upwardly, by which it may be fitted snugly and tightly in place. a is a bolt, sliding in a recess in the removable section A and having a projection, a for withdrawing it from the sash when it is desired to remove the said section. A spring, a pressing against the said bolt, and suitably confined in a recess of the section A shoots the bolt into an aperture in the sash. A projection, b, fastened to the opposite beveled face of the sash, enters a recess or aperture, a, in the abutting beveled face of the section A to assist in securing the latter in place. By thus making the section A adjustable, the use of nails or screws, or other like fastenings, is avoided, and the said section readily and quickly detached and attached to the sashframe in inserting and removing the glass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the sash A A, the removable section A having the spring-bolt a, and aperture or recess a, to receive the projection b of the sash, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonywhereof I have hereunto signed my name this 19th day of January, 1874, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DENNIS N. WEBSTER.
