Description

l.. B. SKIN'NER A ORCHARD HEATER I Beh 5, w24.
-Filed April 16 Patented Feb. .5, 124. i i I UNiTED STATES LEE B. SKINER, OF illUNliilDl'lil',A FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR TO SKINNER MACHINERY COM- i Pm, OFD'UNEDIN, FLORIDA, A CORPORATION 0F FLORIDA.
ORCHARD TER.
Application led April 16, 1923. Serial No. 632,386.
of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orchard Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to orchard heaters and more particularly t that type of heater for burning solid fuel, such as charcoal, coke and like p-roducts.
The present invention has for its principal objects to provide a grate with a receptacle therein located at a point beneath the fuel igniting opening.l
Vith the above mentioned and other objects4 in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understoodthat various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without de arting from the s irit or sacrificing any o the advantages o the invention.
To more clearly comprehend the invention, reference'is directed to the accompanying t drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 i's a vertical sectional view of the preferred embodiment of my invention, illustratin the ignitlng openlng.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective ofJ the grat-e removed from the heater.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts-1 indicates the metallic casing of the heater having an open top 2 and formed in'its side walls adjacent its bottom with draft openings 3 and with an igniting or torch receiving opening 4. Within the base of the casing is positioned a fire grate 5, preferably formed' with the spaced grate bars 6 and having cast integral therewith at one side of the grate a receptacle or depression 7. When the grate is positioned within the casing, the receptacle or depression 7 is disposed at a point an igniting torch inserted into l liquid fuel ,receiving receptacle below the opening 4, as illustrated in Fig. l. Suitable supporting le s 8 are utilized for raising the casing off o the ground and permitting a draft to pass upwardly between the grate bars 6 into the casing. y In igniting the body 9of cok'e, charcoal or like solid fuel, the operator employs a lighting torch 10 formed with a tubular extension 11 carrying at its end a wick 12. The torch is filled withsuitable fuel such as coal oil and the wick is lighted. The extension 1l is then projected at a downward inclination through the opening 4 and while the fuel in the lighting torch discharges in a flaming condition around the wick l2 and. collects within the receptacle 7, being retained ther'ein while burning until it is completely consumed.
This manner of igniting the fuelin the heater requires only sufficient of the operators time to deposit a body of ignited fuel in the receptacle 7, and enables the igniting of a great number-of heaters within a short period of time; The Haming liquid fuel within the receptacle 7 rapidly ignites the.
solid fuel and within a short time after being i nited the heater is in full operation.
,lll ile I have illustrated the receptacle at one side of the grate, it will be readily understood that the same may be located at any other convenient point.
I claim:-
1. An orchard heater comprising a casing, provided in its side wall with-a draft opening and a fire igniting orifice, and a fire supporting rate within vthe casing, and provided adjacent its peripheral edge with a wholly within the casing.
2. An orchard heater comprisin a casing, provided in its wall with a dra t opening and a fire igniting orifice, a fire supporting grate Within the casing, and a liquid fuel receiving receptacle within said ate and wholly within the casing at a polnt below said fire igniting orifice.
In testimony whereof I have V'signed my name to this specification.
