FUEL
'ALFRED' saumon, or n om.
Louisiana.
- Appucaa'fm mea July 5, 1922. serial no. tracas.
` rleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Fuel Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to internal combustion engines and the like and it contemplates the provision cfal device for supplying a large range of fuel from 18 Baume up, including kerosene and distil lates, to such engines.'
The invention further contemplates the provision of a fuel measuring pump and spray nozzle for use in connection with each cylinder ofA an engine whereby carbon deposits will not be left on the piston or in the combustion chamber. A With slight modification existing types of commercial engines ma be equipped with my device.
ther objects and characteristic features will be fully understood from the following description and claims' when the same are read in'connection with the drawings accompanying and `forming part of this specilication, in whichi Figure 1 isa view illustrating in side elevation my'device as applied on a`cylinder that is showp in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fuel pump and atomizer.`
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device and looking from the fuel supply pipe.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the 'views of the drawings.
My novel device comprises the atomizer body or casing 1 having the dependigintegral casing 2 that is threaded whereby it may be secured in the cylinder head casing preferably above the combustion .chamber 43 and directly above the piston-head 4 6.
The casing 2 has an interior bore3 of a diameter that produces a clearance between itself. and the -spray-'needle 4 and said needle moves within the casings 1 and 2 andis provided at its lower end with spiral grooves for increasing the turbulence of the fuel to 50. the chamber.
Al threaded plug 7 having a passage 6 therein is secured in the end of the casing 2` and the nozzle is provided Awith the tapered end that normally seats in the passage l 6 to prevent fuel from gaining access to the combustion chamber. The casing 2- is provided with the bur 2 to permit of the adjustment, with a wrench, ,of the casing on the chamber.
indicated by 4B and. is surrounded by a gland The stem ofthe noz'z1e4's increasedjin diameter at Aits upper end' as 15. The upper portion 4a of the needle '-4 enters a hood 18 lthat is 'provided with a spring 17 confined in the hood b means of a projection 18 formed integra within the upper end ofthe hood 18. The projection 18 seats in and bears against the upper end of the spring 17.
Af bell crank 20 on the shaft 21 is provided with a portion 19 that rests between the nuts 16 on needle 4 and the gland 15. Manifestly rocking of the arm 2O will move the needle upwardly from its normal inoperative position. At its lower end the arm- 20 is provided with a roller 23 and a shoe or abutment 26 that is adapted upon rocking of the arm 20 to actuate an air bell crank arm 27 that is provided with a ortion 32 conned between the nuts 33 o the air control stem 34. This stem travels in a bore 35 'of the body 1 parallel with the needle 4 and said stem is provided with the tapered upper end 37 that bears a ainst a check ball 38. This ball on upwar move inent of the stem or plunger 34 seats in thev air inlet 39 to prevent further passage of air to the by-pass 36. The crank 20 is fulcrumed at 21 on the support .22 -while the air crank 27 is fulcrumed also.
Arranged adjacent the roller 23 of arm 20 is cam 24 on shaft 25 and when the rojection of the' cam strikes the roller 23 the Acrank arms 20 and 27 will be placed in operation. Y
An oil or fuel inlet supply pipe 8 enters the body 1 and a chamber havlng a passage 9' that enters a chamber'lOin which is provided a fuel check ball 9 backed by lthe spring 12. At the upper end the chamber 10 is provided with a pet cock 14 and a bypass 13 permits passage of fuel from chamber 10 to yclearance 3 of-needle 4.
The regular -well known spark plug threaded 1n the cylinder chamber as indicated at44 is employed and for purposes of illustration l have shown the valve head 45 in the cylinder.
It will be noted that a small bell crank 27 arranged on the'shaft 30 and having the eccentrically arranged cam 29 may be emartlyexplosive impulse can. be had an ployed and Aby moving the handle 41 Aof crank 28 in 'an'a'rc of 30 the air can lhe ad- "'inmu tiple cylinder engines the fuel pumps `are spaced evenly around the one actuating cam.
In practice -the'actuating cam strikesthe rollervon the large bell crank and this crank slightly lifts the spray needle 4.. The aci. ftion also operatessmall -bell crank admitting .Ella small charge yof compressed air bypass." Air is supplied in avery small volume andV the fuel will be sprayed into the explosion chamber i'nan even and steady manner.
Manifestly vby decreasing the tension of at spring on needle 4" great flexibility at all speeds is attainable and tests have demonstrated that a spark plugis 'used` for the initial ignition and after aV fevvseconds the spark is cut of. The device entirely 'eliminates carbon-in thecombustion chamber or other place and by means of timing and the peculiar shape 'of calm, a slow burning plr t e eavy explosiveshock eliminated., au, With m device no water injection is'necessary an' nounburned fuel permitted to. condense and pass the rin es thus timing the sump oil; moreover asmall volume of compressed ai'r is 'required for spraying andI only enough to create turbulence and penetration. Y
. Absolutely no refrigeration takes place and thepump measures the .fuel foreachcharge without glands. L' j 4.0 Thedevice issimplel-in construction and'` ecient and prevents .choking of the needles as in the cam and bell cranks are ositive inf" action and: so `arranged that rea y kadjustment of parts maybe made.
