To all whom t may concern.' f Y Be it known that I, BENJAMIN vWoLHAUi- 11 TER, citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Joints with Lightened lVebs, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relateslto rail joints and l0 has vfor its primary object the vprovision ofv a joint bar provided with aA web portion containing a'miiiimum quantity of metal j and yet possessing adequate strength and stiffness for carrying the loading strains and l5 stresses from the'head to the foot portionfof To that end the invention contemplates i a novel and practical distributionof metal in the web of the bar so as to leave trussing ribs and intervening pockets or depressions in the bar thereby to permit the metal to be distributed so as to save a substantial amount thereof and thus reduce the cost and weight of the bar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a joint bar with a lightened web and having inclined 'trussing members which .j are an integral-part ofthe web and may be formed during the process of rollingthe bar 3o thereby avoiding the necessity of afterwards strengthening or stiei'iing the web of the bar by vsupplemental means. With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferredv and practical embodiment Vof the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one of the forms of my invention.

Thepresent invention aims to produce a joint bar of the character set forth by the rolling -method, the limitations of which have heretofore made it very difficult to obtain a bar effecting a maximum economy of metal which would render the bar comparatively light and yet of adequate strength to withstand the loading strains imposedon the joint in track.
The present bar -herein proposed has taken into consideration the limitations of the rolling method and observes requirements of standard rolling milll practice and provides a novel web construction which permits of a maximum economy of metal in the portion of the bar wherethe compression and tension forces tend to neturalize about the horizontal neutral axis of the bar.
Accordingly, the present invention contemplates the provision of a rolled joint bar having a lightened web including integral inclined trussing ribs produced by subnormal displacements of metal, and although the invention may be carried into effect in connection with joint bars of various types, by way of illustrating the range of embodiment of the invention, reference may rst be made to Figures-l to 3 of the drawings wherein the joint bar A of substantially I-bar formation is provided with the web portion B lconnecting the head C and foot D. The said web portion B has the inner face thereof formed with the oppositely inclining trussing ribs l defining therebetween substantially triangular pockets or depression 2 which extend partly through the thickness of the web and represent metal saved in the finished bar. This arrange` ment produces a novel trussing construction at the inner face of the bar and yet adequately provides for carrying the loading strains and stresses through the bar as well as permitting the wave motion to easily pass through the joint.
According to the embodiment shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, the web B is provided with a plurality of pockets 3 opening at opv a double lattice of diagonal braces.

The said pockets or depressions 3 are preferabl of such a depth as to leave an undisturbed7 web portion 5 connecting the head and foot of the bar thus preserving the desirable I-bar formation and yet providing a relatively thin continuous weh portion 5 which has the benelit of the reinforcing effect of the trussing reinforcing areas 4 and the additional advantage of being light due to the removal of the metal to form the pockets or cups 3. j
Another modification is shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings wherein the idea of integral inclined trussing ribs is further carried forward, the web of the bar being formed with diagonal grooves 6 and intervening diagonal braces 7. As illustrated in this form of the invention the inclined diagonal braces 7 and the intervening grooves 6 may be formed on both sides of the bar and in that event the grooves and braces are inclined in opposite directions. thus producing In Figure 10 there is disclosed a modification of the invention wherein the diagonal braces 72" are formed only at one side of the bar 'while the outer face 8 is made plain 'or flat. From the foregoing it will be seen that the present invention aims to provide a jointbar having a lightened web which may be formed by making sub-normal depressions at one or both sides of the web and using the depressions in such a way as to leave the web reinforced. by a series of integral the web and are so spaced that the material between them will form a diagonal lattice construction to reinforce the bar.
It will of course be understood that the bars may be provided with the usual bolt holes H at desirable and convenient locations.
Without further description it is thought that the many features and advantages of the present invention will be` readily apparent and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construct-ion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
