Be it known that I, ANroNro PAeLIUco, a subject of King of Italy, and resident of Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to keys and more particularly to that type of key having a retractable bit and adapted to be inserted into the look through a circular key hole.

Principal objects of the invention are to provide a key of this type of compact and durable construction, whose moving partsv are few,.simple, and readily manipulated by the fingers of one hand, and provided with guardgmeansfor preventing access of dirt or lintto the moving parts when the key is not in use. In the accompanying drawings in which the invention is illustrated:

Fig. 1 is-a side elevation of the key to enlarged scale with the bit in operative position and the guard retracted;

The improved key comprises a handle 1 of any usual form and a'shank 2 having a narrow axially extending chamber 3 in which a slide 4 is arranged. Preferably the shank is tubular and made of metal and a longitudinally slotted filler piece 2 is secured within its bore, the slot in the filler and the wall of the tubular shank desuch as 18 or head 7 which is spaced slightly from the upper surface of the shank and by means of which the slide may be moved longitudinally in the chamber 3. Near the end of the shank the walls of the chamber 3 are slotted at 8, 9 respectively, and within this part of the chamber the bit 10 is pivotally supported upon the pin 11. The longer end of the bit is provided with the usual notches or projections to cooperate with the'wards of the lock while the shorter end of the bit is slotted for the reception of the forward end of a link 12 which is pivotally connected to the bit by means of a pin 13. The link extends rearwardly along the chamber 3 and is pivotally connected to the slide 4 by means of a pin 14.

A guard 15 in the form of a split sleeve embraces the shank 2 and may slide longitudinally of or turn upon the latter. This guard has a slot'l6 of a width sufficient to permit passage of the stem 6 of the finger piece and one end of the slot is preferably flared at 17 to facilitate entrance of the stem. I

Preferably, however, the wards should be thinner than usual in order to avoid the necessity of making the key bit wider than can conveniently be concealed within a shank of permissible diameter. The front or outer side of the door is furnished with a circular key hole 21 of a diameter to admit the shank of the key and may be surrounded by an 'escutcheon plate 22 if desired.
