SERIES PHONE-CONNECTER BLOCK.-v
Application filed May 4,
To all whom. a may mm.-
Be it known that 1,.Axrrrun B. MCCALL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and Statev of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Series Phone-Connecter Blocks, of'which the following is a specification.
M invention relatesto phone connecter blocll s and switches used in connection with radiophone or telephone reception where a plurality of phones are desired to be connected to. the same single circuit for listening in on concerts, signals and the like. .15
An object of my invention is to provide a simple andeconomical device. that will enable groups of people that. are interested in listeningin particularly on radio concerts and the like, to connect a plurality of that connects all the sets up in series on the same circuit.
A further object of my invention is to provide an appliance that will effectively accommodate a greater number "of head sets on agiven circuit current than is possible in a multiple or parallel connection as for example certain commonly used vacuum tubes in radio service have an internal impedance of 15,000 to 25,000 ohms with a pressure of 40 volts on the B bat- .teries at one or one and ouehalf amperes cuit.
. provide an ap A further object of my invention is to rovide a device for series connection of head sets, that requires simple processes of manufacture, inexpensive materials and parts and consequently cheap in price aswell as afiording simple means of detach ably securing head sets to it.
.further object of my invention is to liance that will afford a detachably rigl connection for either the phone plug or the socalled cord tips, each in common use where head sets are used.
A comprehensive embodiment of my invention is illustrated mfthe accompanying 'bloc head sets-conveniently onto an apparatus 1922'. Serial No. 558,517.
drawings -which form a part of this spec- I ification in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations.
In the accompanying, drawing 1 have illustrated several of the prefer Etl 'emlbodiments of my invention in whic it-wi l he observed that the major eilemelit of novelty in my invention is adaptable..to',1i!isuhited connecter blocks of various shapes and'de s1 us for use in various situations;
n the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail a portion of a connccterblock illustrating'three connecting sections A, B, sets connected thereto. v
F i 2 illustrates a front elevation} of one of gsie' connecting VSGCl'dQU S of eonnecter Fig. 3 is a vertical hall section of'the connecter taken as passin thriiugh opposite connecting sections. is view' also illustrates the way a top or cover would rest on the block and be detach'ably secured theretop Fig. 4 illustrates a circular disc; shaped connecter block having six connecting sectionsA, 13,0, D, E, and F.
Fig. 5 is an illustration of aconnectcr .block having the general sha e of a quarter circular disc and showing a so how a connection would be made between the block and receiving cabinet.
Fig. 6 is an illustration of a rectangular connecter block provided with eight connecting sections and showing a possible -means of connecting up the block with the receiving set.
Fig. 7, is a perspective showing the relation of bus connecter 18 to one of the several inserts 27 which are molded into their respective operating positions. These inserts are sweclged to the bus connecter l8 and are provi ed with internal threads to accommodate the several corresponding thumbscrew terminals which are normally vertically disposed, and adaptedv to make contact with the predetermined corresponding elements of inserted plugs 'or with cord tips as the case may be.
It will be observed that witha comiecter embodying my invention the in ut from the receiving set may be made either with cord tips or plug and this in put connection can be made at any one of the .-,connecting sections of the block, such as at sea and with head.
jam 4, n, o, n, E, ayG or H, ra s c 0c in any one of O Fig. 4-(section D in this case preferred).
the'eix sections on the b or any section-in either Fig. 4 or Fig. '1.
It will be observed that my invention in volves the combination-of elements that make it possible to use onlffhead either the'common cord tips orthe commonly used ph'oneplugs as illustrated in 'Fig. 1, and
be used. also in connectmg the either mla v connecter lock with therreceiving set.
may'be moulded-into .time' the bu's' conductorg 18 may 7 'ofjthe block. Ifit-is-desired to- Such an adaptable convenient combine 11 assume as will afi'ord such achoice of connecting means as this is much needed "now, especially in; thefield of rad o'phone -eerv1ce..
connecter blocks by cutting out the block and J drilling the' holes for sockets in the sides 'and'the" holes for-connecting terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the upper surface then such holes should ha'vein'serts therein orifthe material --used is suitable the terminal holes maybe threaded in the block material.
Itis obvious that each connector bldck is "provided with a series. of identical connecting sections such as sectio'nsd, B and C, Fig. 1. Each connecting section is composed ofcooperating elements adapted to serve "as detachable terminal connection means for phone plugs and cord tips.
- For exam la in 1g. -1 at section A, the
illustration 5 ows how thelcom'mon cord tips 1 9 and 10 are inserted into " sockets 16 and 17 .and held intov operative positionby the thumb-*screwsj 3 and 4 and, at the same time thereby making connections with the hfus convnccter 518; :When this. "connectiom-ls made the circuit switch .5 is: detached'*from terminal 1 and is left open as long asthe conneetion'is desired, thus allowing the'circuit to" 0 through the phones.
' f in this case it was desired to not use section A 'ifor the connection'then the circuit "switcho pivoted at QwouId-be'hooked again ,onto terminal post 1 and thus the hook 5 conductor 18.
3 a connection block using'a common telephone wouldconduct the circuit on through tion'A to the adjacentsection through bus *In section 0 (if-mp1 is Shown a phone plug 6 of common design ordinarily used in connection with a p one jack but which is peculiarly well adap'te to'successfullv operate with this connecter; It is estimated that jack as connection means to accommodate as many headsets? as this block, would cost insects imon phone lug 6 anenormall phones at will is made of suitable- -,.necter block may be varied :n'design and yet stay within the scope of my invention. ,For instance Figures 4, 6 aud t; showthree BEST AVAlLABLE COP several times as'muc'h one of these blocks,
because. of simplicity of the construction ina this block.
When it is desired to use phone plug 6 it is inserted' intosocket 15, contact is made and the lug held into position-by tightening the t umb screw terminalsat 1 and 2 so that terminal 1 contacts with the knob .8 of v the plug 6 andterminal 2 "contacts trunk 7 of the lug.-
Sincethe trunk Tend from each 0t e1; it, will be no said plugiis into normal operatin position terminal 2.contacts with trunk with that when and terminal Icontactswith knob 8 thus r permitting thecircuit to pass through the by mereIy- .detaoh ing circuit switchio from terminal 1..
In section B .Eig.l;1 the illnstration shows how the eord ftips pl may-be Both used. in thefsame secti'oiiat t e same' time, m k s'it. po s t more" pho k th head sets on a small blocltif desired;-
a e e It willbe observed that this series'condesigns rhapg more likel' who referred but}! y p circle could be used or hexagon or.
any; one of many possible designs of block" could be used and of my invention.
- The design m'ay he varied to Suit the situation.
4 Having thus described the nature of my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a series phone connection block of insulating material a, plurality of connectin sections adjacently connected inseries, eac
