BOILER-PIPE CONNECTION.

`Be it known that I, VITTORIO ANDRIoLI, a subject ofthe King of Italy, residing at Schenectady, State of New York, have in- -vented certain new and useful ImprovementsinBoiler-Pipe Connections; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to Inew and useful improvements in boiler lpipeconnections or mountings, forvuse in locomotive boilers or various other commercial constructions to which the various parts thereof will adapt themselves.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a boiler tube mounting in the boilers fire box, with the two ends in immediate contact with the internal pressure, so that the said pressure will be localized balancing thc two ends of said p 1nother object of the invention resides in the provision of a mounting or connection for boiler pipes, which makes it possible to substitute the open end pipes for the closed end pipes now used in return circulating systems and also the elimination of the cus ternary cages also employed.
A furtherobject of the invention resides in the provision of a mounting such as above referred to, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eilicient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application and in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view taken through a fire box with the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale taken through one of the boiler tubes;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4: is an enlarged detail of Figure 2. Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughoutthe yseveral views, the `numeral 5 denotes in general a furnace comprisingthe usual, crown side Shaving the customary fire box 7 located therein. The fire box 7 `comprises the usualside walls 8, `having openings v9 zformed therein, 4in which boiler tubes 10 are mounted with their ends crimped as at 11 in the usual `manner `to hold `them against displacement.
Innertubes 12` lead `fromthe exterior of the crown side 6 lcentrally through the boiler tubes 10, terminating short of the lower kends ofthesaid ,boilertubes which are inclined, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. Shoulders 13, screw threaded as at 14, are formed within the lower ends of the tubes 10 and have threaded engagement with the inner threaded ends of the caps 15 which are provided intermediate their ends with conical portions 16 which engage the bevelled ends of the tubes 10 and seal the latter against leakage.
Between the threaded ends of the caps 15 and the conical portions 16 thereof, the said caps are formed with openings 17, as clearly shown in Figure 2. The caps are inserted through the upper end of the tubes 10 and gravitate towards the crimped ends 11. The outer ends of the caps are provided with angular sockets 18 for the engagement with a key or the like which may be inserted through the aligning-openings 19 formed in the crown side of the boiler. The caps are thus drawn into threaded engagement with the shoulders 13. These openings are closed by the customary plugs 20.
In operation, the water iows in through the tubes 12, passes around the ends thereof and back through the tubes 10 from which` they pass through the open ends 21 thereof into the compartments 22 and 23 disposed between the opposite sides of the iire box 7 and the crown side 6 of the boiler.
From the foregoingdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a mountin for boiler tubes is provided which will ful l all o f the necessary requirements of such a device.
It should be understood in this connection that various minor` changes in the specificdetails of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the 'appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:-
1. A closure cap for a pipe, comprising a cylindrical member having means at its in,- ner end for engaging the interior of the pipe, and being tapered at its outer end to form a wedge fit With the end of the pipe.
2. A closure cap for a pipe, comprising a tube having means at its inner end for engaging the interior of the pipe, and being tapered at its outer end to form a Wedge fit with the end of the pipe, a partition Within said tube near thevouter end thereof, and an aperture in the Wall of the tube on the inner side of the partition.
8. The combination with a pipe having an interior shoulder, of a closure cap for said pipe, comprising a cylindrical member having means at its inner end for engaging said shoulder, and being tapered at its outer end to form a Wedge it With the end of the pipe.
4. The combination With a pipe having an interior shoulder, of a closure cap for said pipe, Comprising a tube having means at its inner end for engaging said shoulder, and being tapered atits outer end to form a Wedge fit With the end of the pipe, a partition Within said tube near the outer end thereof, and an aperture in the Wall of the tube on the inner side of the partition.
5. The combination of a pipe having an interior shoulder and a bayonet slot formed on the interior of the pipe adjacent said shoulder, of a closure cap for said pipe comprising a cylindrical member having a stud I at its 'inner end for engaging said bayonet slot and being tapered yat its outer end to form a Wedge it with the end of the pipe.
