N. HANSEN CENTRIFUGALLY ACTUATED SHORT CIRCUITING DEVICE Filed June 25 1919 F/y/ /0 a /6 F/yj 20 WITNESSES: INVENTOR Patented Jan. 29, 19246 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NIELS HANSEN, F WILKZNSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
CENTRIFUGALLY-ACTUATED SBOBT-GIRCUITING DEVICE.
Application filed June 25, 1919. Serial No. 806,624.
To all whom it may GOQZCGPR,"
Be it known that 13 NIELS HANSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Wiilrinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Centrifugally-Actuated Short-Circuiting Devices, or which the following is a specification.
My inventituated shor electric mach lat-ion to si' mutator y e sion operation and for ind termined spec The objec" or simple and cuiting the cosuch device he by a means whi in the speed of E3hort-cimuit ltl it relates to centrifugally-acliaise devices for dynamoi it has particular remeters of the comare adapted for repulthe starting period n operation after a prede- 5 been attained.
nvention is to provide a e device for short-cirmutator of such a motor, automatically controlled 1 is responsive to variations the motor.
devices of the abovementioned type, as heretofore constructed, have comprised sleeve slidably mounted on the motor sh and adapted to be moved longitudinal the shaft by centrifugallyactuatedlevc and, in other devices, a no sleeve mounted.
on the shaft and adapted to be moved I'otatubly as well as axially when being brought into engagement with the commutator cylinder. In both cases, of course, the short-circuiting device is returned to its inoperative position, by means of spring members, when the motor is operating below a predetermined speed.
By my invention, I propose an improve-' ment upon the latter structure which consists of a simplification of the actuating device for such structure.
Specifically, my invention is an improvement upon the structure disclosed in application Serial No. 955,928, filed by George H. Garcelon and Joseph L. Chantemerle, on May 3, 1916, and assigned to the Westing house Electric 8: Manufacturing Company.
In. the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end elevational view of a dynamo-electric machine constructed in accordance with my invention. parts being broken away for the salts of clesrness; F g. i2 is a side elevatioiml view oi the structure shown in Fig. 1; i 3 is a detail view a casting employed in the structure shown in the other iii) ad acent to the en centrifugal weights 11 that are pivotally mounted upon the supporting member 10 by means of pins 110:. The'weights 11 are each provided with a projection 12 to which is attached a spring 13, the other end of which is attached to a portion of the supporting member 10 in such manner as to oppose the centrifugal force exerted by the weight members 11., Upon two projections 14 of the supporting member 10 are pivotally mounted, by means of pins 14a, two link members 15 of substantially triangular shape which are pivotally connected to a plate 16 by means of lugs 17 thereof and pins 18.
The short-circuiting disk 8 is mounted upon the plate 16 so that, when the connecting link 15 moves the plate 16 toward the commutator cylinder, the disk 8 is brought into engagement with the end of the commutator cylinder. The projections 12 on the weight members 11 are each provided with a pin 19, which, when in its operative position, is disposed within a slot 20 in the connecting link 15 so that, when the weight members 11 move about their pivotal point 11a, the pin 19 so engages the sides of the slot 20 as to cause the link 15 to move the plate 16 and the disk 8 toward the commutator cylinder.
The pivotal point 140;, about which the link 15 moves, is normally disposed at a greater distance from the commutator cylinder than is the pin 18. The object of this arrangement is to produce a rotary, as well as an axial, movement of the disk 8 when it engages the end of the commutator cylinder, If the pin 18 were an equal distance from. the commutator cylinder with the pin 14a, the movementof the isl: would be entirely axial. This combined rotary and axial mo till (rip

In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with an armature and a commutator cylinder mounted u on a rotatable shaft, of a short-circuiting evice for said commutator cylinder comprising a movable contact plate, and means for moving said plate into contact with said cylinder, said means comprising a support mounted upon said shaft, a plurality of centritugally-actuated arms provided with pins and pivotally mounted on said sup ort, and a plurality oil link members of sold shape each pivotally mounted on said support about a pin in one corner thereof, pivotally connected to said plate by a pin in a .second corner thereof, and provided with a slot in the third corner with which said pins in said centrifugally-actuated arms co act to move said link members.
lln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with an armature and a commutator cylinder mounted upon a rotatable shaft, of a short-circuiting device for said conimutator cylinder comprising a movable contact plate, and means for moving said plate into contact with said cylinder, said means comprising a support mounted upon said shaft, a plurality of centrifugally-actuated arms provided with pins and pivotally mounted on said support, and a plurality of link members of substantially triangular shape each pivotally mounted on said support about a pin in one corner thereoif, piv
otally connected to said plate by a pin in" a second corner thereof, and provided with a slot in the third corner with which said pins in said centritugally-actuated ari'ns coto move said link members, said second mentioned pivotal pin being normally disposed closer to said commutator cylinder than said first-mentioned pivotal pin.
in testimony whereof, have hereunto subscribed my name this l lth day of June, 1919.
