To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN NEWTON COLBY,
of Mystic Bridge, county of New London,
of which the following is a specification:
My improved coating for boilers, &c., consists of asbestus disintegrated, so as to preserve the long fibers, combined with glutinous or adhesive substances or compositions described, which will serve to consolidate the mass, and to cement it to the boiler or other surface to which the coating is applied.
The adhesive substance which I employ is flour, which is combined with disintegrated fibers of asbestus in the proportion of four pounds of flour to one hundred pounds of asbestus, and to this is added one pound of borax or alum.
After the materials have been thoroughly mixed with .sufficient water to form a paste with the flour, the mixture is either spread upon the boiler or other surface with a trowel, like mortar, or it is formed into sheets and applied to the surface before quite dry. In either case the covering upon drying will adhere firmly.
Where the coating material is to be transported to any distance before being applied, it is best to mix the ingredients dry, adding the water just before the application.
I claim- An asbestus coating for steam-boilers, consistin g of disintegrated asbestus, combined with flour and borax, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
