This invention relates to an improved l0 driving box for locomotives Vand has as one of its principal objects to provide a construction wherein the box may, without 'removing' the locomotive drive wheels, be readily displaced.
The invention has :is a urth'erobject to provide a box employing a detachable face plate, where-iii the face plate may be readily released to be lifted out vertically and where in the box body inay then be shifted i1iwardly and removed.
A further object ol the invention is toV providev a construction wherein the Jrace plate will be connected at its upper end to the upper end ofthe box body4 by fastening" devices while at its lower end the box bodyl will itself be provided with ineans `for locking the lower end of the face plate thereto to thus eliminate the use oficastening devices at the lower end of the box body. j

Further, said shoulders will, as will be seen, coact to lock the end portions of the face plate against spreading. Consequently, after the nuts 3G have been loosened, the bolts may be rotated to easily position the bolt heads in alinement with the slots 89 in the face plate, when the bolts 'may then be .retracted for drawing the bolt `heads through the face plate and into the recesses 33 in the box body. The face plate will then be freed so that a suitable tool may be engaged in the opening 31 through the .fiange 29 of said plate and the plate lifted This done, the box ingly provide a construction whereby the Lbox may, without removing the drive wheels, be readily displaced.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A journal box including a boxbody, a
`face plate seating against the outer side ofY the box body, and means securing the plate to the box body, said means being rotatable retracted to free the plate for removal in a vertical plane parallel to the adjacent face of the box body.
2. A journal box including a box body, a face plate. seating against the. outer side thereof, and means carried by the box body and engaged with the plate for securing the plate to the box body, said means being rotatable to a position whereby such means may be retracted upon the box body to free the plate for removal in a plane parallel withthe box body.
3. A journal box includinga box body provided' with recesses, a face plate seating against the outerside of the box body, the platebeing provided with slots therethrough entering recesses in the outer side of the plate, and bolts engaging through the box body and said slots for securing the face plate to the box body, said bolts being provided with heads freely received in the recesses of the plate whereby the bolts may be rotated to dispose the heads thereof in alinement with said slots and then retracted through the face plate to dispose said heads vin the recesses of the box bod/y` and thus permit removal of the face plate in a vertilcal plane parallel to the adjacent face of the I box body.

5. In a journal box, a box body, a face plate seating against the outer side thereof,
coacting means carried by the plate and body respectively for lockingrone end por'- tion of the plate to the body, and means carried by the body and engaged with the plate for securing the opposite end portion of theplate to the body, said lasty mentioned means being rotatable whereby such means may be retracted to free the plate and permit removal thereof in a vertical plane parallel to the adjacent face of the box body.
6. A journal box including a box body having outwardly projecting lugs providing longitudinally inclined shoulders having their length sloping laterally upward and forward away from the box body, a face plate seating against the outer side of the box body and having downwardly inclined shoulders confronting said tirst mentionedshoulders, the plate being movable upwardly n against the outer side of the box body, and
means securing the plate against upward bod)Y and tilted toward each other, a faceplate seating against the' outer side of the box body and having end portions provided with shoulders tilted to coact with said first mentioned shoulders for sustaining the end portions of the plate against spreading, the plate being removable upwardly against the outer side of the box body, and means locking the plate against upward movement.

A journal boxuincluding a box body havingconcave longitudinally inclined shoulders having their length sloping laterally upward and forward away from the box body, a face plate seating` against the outer side of the box body land having end portions provided with convex shoulders mating with said rst mentioned shoulders for sustaining the end portions of the plate against spreading, the. plate being removable upwardly in a plane parallel .to the adjacent faceof the box body, and means locking the plate against upward movement.

A journal box includingv a box body having outwardly projecting lugs formed at their upper ends with concave shoulders inclining upwardly away from the box body, a face plate seating against the out-er side of the box body and provided with end portions having downwardly inclined convex shoulders enacting with said lirst mentioned shoulders for lookingthe face plate to the box body and sustaining thev end portions of said plate against spreading, the plate being` removable upwardly in a plane parallel to the adjacent face of the box body, and means locking the plate against upward movement.

In a journal. box` the combination of a box body provided adjacent its inner side with pedestal flanges and having a forwardly extendingprojection at its outer side, said projection beinea provided with straight vertically disposed side faces, a face plate seating against the outer side of the box body over-hanging the body to provide pedestal flanges to cooperate with said first mentioned flanges and straddling said projection to coact with the straight faces thereof, said faces locking the tace plate against rotative movement, and means connecting the face plate with the box body.
