or v ALvEs or Application mea Aprilia, 1920. seriaiNo. 373,476.
Be it known that I, CLAUDE I-IAi/IERTON RoWE, a subject of the King of Great'Brit-v ain, residing at Husthwaite, Easingwold, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements 1n a Device for Preventin Around the Stems of alvesof Internalisa specification.
. The I'iresentv invention refersl to a device for. internal combustion engines designed to prevent leakage of air betweenthe stem of a( valve andthe-valve guide throu h which it passes; the invention refers to t at kmd or type of such device which'comprises a tu-u bular sleeve open at one end, .havin'ggay through aperture at theopposlte otherwise.'
closed end, and anannular washer of v'felt or the like located within `said sleeve and bearingon said closed end. Such a Sleeve is utilized by being passed over .the -valve stem around which the felt .washer closely lits, the upper end of the sleeve bein passed over thev valve guide, and the '.s eeve is formed with an external flange against Awhich the ordinary valve spring acts to re- -tain the sleeve in position and` to press said spo washer between the said valve base of the sleeve. 'The' valve guides guide and the sleeves are to .be fitted, that is over which they are to be passed, frequently vary in diameter, and evensometimes in formation,
some such valve guides being conical, and
consequentl it is .requisite that in the manuin shape.
facture suc sleeves must be' madein'varied sizes and in shapes also, and sincethe tools requi-red for the manufacture of the sleeves are costly, these considerations are detrimental to their general employment.
Now the object of thepresent invention -is 'to so construct such a sleeve that it will be 1 universally applicable to dilering sizes and shapes of va ve guides, all'ashereafter described and claimed.
The invention win be described with ref-- erence to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 shows the' improved device fitted to a valve guide with vertical sides, andFig. 2 shows a lmodified construction of the de# vice fitted to a valve guide which is conical rig. sshows 'in vertical Section alla plan -vation of am vsleeve shown in Fig. 3.
Leakage of Air as felt, having la central aperture coinciding fwhere t e valve guide 6`-is conical as at however to which such- .felt .washer v4 1n Vposition land form.
at Figs. ,shape the separate arms 5 proceeding up'- as fitted to Fig. 2 and Fig. 5V is a front eleodified construction of the Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, the sleeve is formed with a base part 1 having a central aperture 2 through which the valve stem 3 passes, and within the-sleeve on the base part 1 islocated a washer 4 of soft material, such with the aperture 'in the base part 1.
Proceedlng from thebase part 1 and bent in an upward direction are a .plurality of separate arms 5 adapted to pass over and embrace the usual valve guide 6. The u per ends of the arms 5 lof the' sleeve are .valve guide was of larger dlameter than the normal internal .diameter vof the sleeve, by the arms 5 .being distancd from one another suiiciently to pass over the valve guide. Similarl such a' sleeve is applicable even Fig. 2.
he stem of thevalve passes as aforesaid through the soft washer 4 which lits the stem and through the aperture ofthe base part l, and the valve guide is fitted with the usual-abutment washer 8 which supports' the lower end of the usual valve spring 9,' and the Jup er end of the valve spring 9 bears beneat the Hanged ends 7 of the arms 5 of the sleeve.
^ In the construction of sleeve just described themanufacture can Vbe conveniently carried out by stamping va blank out of sheet metal and bending up the arms 5 into the position shown at Figs. 3 and bending over the anges 7.
Obviously, as shown in Fig. '5, some of the .arms 5 may be shorter than the others,
merely servin the oliice of retaining the In the modied.construction ofthe sleeve 4, the base part 1 is formed cupwards from the edge of the cup, and such a construction is shown as applied at Fig. 2.
to 1, Fig. `4 show another construction I ioo` view one construction ofthe sleeve as fitted As shown at Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawl nt outwardly to form outwardly extending 'Ill - ings, thelength of the upstanding arms is var ing Vighat such that thelr upper flanged ends will have a bearing upon the collar 10 of the valve guide 6, or equivalent abutment, so that the upper ends of the arms 5 are held against the collar l0 and the washer 4 is thus maintained under constant and substantially unressure.
claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters atent; is
1. A. washer supporting device for valves comprising an annular Washer supporting bod having radially disposed iexible arms, sai arms adapted to be bent substantially perpendicular to the plane of said annular body and said arms being provided with out-turned flanges adjacent their free ends,
iflaisa said flanges constitutn abutment members.
2. A washer supportxn device for valves comprisin a cup shape part adapted to seat a was er the bottom of said cu having an orifice for the fpassage of a valJve stem, and a plurality o flexible armsextending in spaced relation from the marginal edge of said cup part, said arms having their ends out-turned to constitute abutment members.
In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.-
CLAUDE HAMERTON ROWE.
