IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,156, dated March 3, 1::74; application filed April 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. WALLIS, of Rocky Comfort, in the county of McDonald and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fence- Stays, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents my improved stays as applied to different styles of fence. Fig. 2 represents my improved stay as applied to a rail-fence.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved stay for fences, which shall be simple in construction, strong, and durable, and which may be applied to rail, plank, and picket fences with equal facility. The invention consists in the improvement of fences, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
A represents the brace, which is set in an inclined position, and the upper end of which extends to, or nearly to, the top of the fence. B is the lower or foot brace, the lower end of which rests upon the ground, and the upper end is attached to the brace A at a greater or less distance below its middle point, as may be desired. To the braces A B are attached Vertical bars 0 C.
When the stays are applied to a rail-fence, the brace B is attached to the brace A in such a position that the said brace B may support the bottom-rails of the fence at the proper distance from the ground.
